Thanks Gonzo for a great summing up. I reckon GBS thought early on that pressure from government over the expense to the taxpayer would lead to us being given the stadium, or offered it at a bargain price. I don't think this will now happen. But they dug in and hoped for that. No attempt at fostering good will: they waited, hoping the opposition would crack. But as you pointed out - the value of the land there is rising rapidly. Kretinsky or a new owner will, I reckon, build a brand new stadium at a cheaper site further out with decent transport links. First the club owners need to sort out whatever we owe LLDC by the terms of that agreement. But our residency at Stratford is temporary. So the stadium in the end is not so important. Staying in the Premier League is. I look forward also to seeing 'Winners ECL 2023' on the Billy Bonds stand at the new stadium. COYI!

Whether one likes it or not, this really is good business by Sully. Ultimately, the landlords will be forced to offer the stadium to WH ,to limit the eventual cost to the Tax Payer, given the on goings are escalating significantly. Presumably, the Board have realised that a £400m purchase saving, could then be used to redress the stadium faults ie running track and fans distance, erect purpose built, and more permanent structure, with capacity, say 60,000 fans, not to mention extended corporate facility, thereby enhancing the overall value of the club. While this ultimately, is grossly unfair to the tax payer, however it is a consequence of poor legal advice, and long term vision, when drafting the contract. WH hold all the Aces, and the landlord have no real options !

Not even winning football matches can change the club for the better for me. I had a season ticket aged 5 and went over there as boy and man - even heading over there when I was an apprentice at the Valley and should’ve been over there on a Saturday instead (naughty boy). The tube, The Green Man boozer, the sausage in batter or pie and chips on the way…I’ve now lived overseas for 13 years and whenever I go back with my young lads it’s to a crappy bowl miles away from the pitch with no real matchday atmosphere - so far removed from what I grew up with it’s untrue. Add the disgusting amount of money in the game and VAR and it’s no longer the game I loved unfortunately. I’m undoubtedly stuck in the past, even at a relatively young 41, but I’m ok with that. West Ham want to buy it alright, for as low a price as possible. Any public declaration by the board should be seen against that background. The LLDC was forced into offering a low rent because they were under political pressure not to sell the building, but they needed a tenant. That low rent and the long tenancy have given West Ham a strong bargaining position when it comes to buying. I don't think it matters one jot that the LLDC and the club have been at loggerheads over details in the contract - in fact it just piles more pressure on the landlords to get the stadium off their hands as quickly as possible.

Hello Gary Tottenham fan. Now I do kinda remember how this went from a Tottenham viewpoint because around the time that the London stadium went out to tender west ham were the only party interested but they made it clear that they wanted a purpose built stadium for football which meant ripping out the running track. The athletic higher ups didn't want another scenario like the Manchester City stadium which if you remember was built for the commonwealth games and then turned into a football stadium. The athletic association wanted there to be a national athletic stadium with track to use for major athletic meets. OK so they put it out to preferred bidders and Tottenham were invited because at that time we were looking to rebuild and it was just more cost effective to move into the London stadium and tear up the running track. Once it was clear that that's what Levy intended then west ham changed their tune and agreed to keep the track which was what Lord Coe and the athletic association wanted so West ham got the preferred bidder and moved in. I remember at the time thinking that the rent for West Ham was more than favourable for the term of the lease. That's how it actually went because Tottenham Daniel Levy even offered to throw a truck load of money to re do up crystal Palace athletic ground because it still worked out cheaper than building the stadium we have now. That's the actually account of how it played out. Karen Brady and Co pushed the boat out to grab the stadium for West Ham.

The Olympic stadium build was incredibly short-sighted, it would've been better* had a deal been made prior to construction to do something similar to the City of Manchester stadium, which was brilliantly converted for Citeh. Other than that knock down the OS and rebuild a proper football stadium as Juventus did with the infamous Delle Alpi.

If it’s as bad as you say, it’s simply not worth us buying it at the moment. From a business perspective it seems the risks outweigh the benefits. You can argue all you like about how much is spent on the team (£300m under Moyes tenure), but why would you want endless sums of money diverted into paying for roof & stewards when someone else is legally obliged to do it. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are just waiting to be paid to take it off the owners hands & then they can sell everything at a bigger profit.
@StephenInfield
@StephenInfield Год назад
Totally agree. Any owner of WHU would be mad to own the stadium when someone else is legally obliged to pay all the running costs. There are 2 things that are embarrassing though. 1) That we are immorally (but albeit legally) benefitting, when other clubs don't. It feels utterly wrong to me. 2) Look at Arsenal and Spurs; rebuilt at vast cost, yet still remain top 6. Yet we have all that financial benefit, yet we're still shit!

@@StephenInfield I thought it was built by the taxpayer, i/e every football fan ! west ham should buy it and refund the treasury
@squatterbdoss
@squatterbdoss Год назад
@@drpepper4320 I strongly doubt every football fan built the LS. All taxpaying fans, though, will have had some of their taxes spent on building it. 'Should': 😄😄: You can do anything with a 'should'; stick some wings on a pig and it should fly....😄😄 So, West Ham does not need at all to refund the treasury/ Greater London Authority (GLA), who own it. And if it doesn't have to, you can bet your bottom dollar, West Ham won't. And you wouldn't either, would you? When was the last time you ever sent extra money to HMRC? Never, yeah? And neither would anyone else.... If West Ham ever DOES 'buy' the LS, you can guarantee that it will screw the very best deal possible out of the LLDC (acting on behalf of the GLA). And because the stadium is losing £20m pa (so the LLDCs bargaining position is v weak), it is quite possible that instead of refunding the GLA / London Taxpayer, they might have to pay WHU to take that albatross off their hands. And, by the way, that £20m doesn't include cost of repairs like a leaking roof.... which could turn out to be VERY expensive. And if you were renting a house, and the boiler needed to be replaced (which is legally the landlord's responsibility), you would say: 'I've kept my side of the deal by paying my rent; you have to pay for the boiler; end of. I don't give a monkeys that my rent is low, and that you're losing money already and now you have this massive cost on top. You didn't have to sign the contract in the 1st place. Your problem, not mine; FIX IT or I'll see you in court' That is what is at play here. But it is pretty uncomfortable. Blame the folly of how the stadium was conceived in the 1st place (not allowing for football afterwards but exclusively athletics. Sebastian Coe was the person responsible for that lunacy. And also Boris Johnson later.... And possibly the FA / Football League/ Prem League who maybe should boot WHU out for effectively being subsidised by the taxman, and therefore not a level 'playing field'. And, if that is the case, wouldn't they need to boot out City as well, after all, didn't they inherit a taxpayer funded stadium too?

There's not much land left to redevelope around the ground. 10 years too late for that.

It’s going to get worse once Chelsea move in to share the stadium for five years while they rebuild Stamford Bridge😊. The original plan was the best, turn into a permanent replacement for the athletic stadium at Crystal Palace. A 25,000 track and field international quality athletics venue. I remember right Levy wanted to demolish the lot - build a proper football stadium, and rebuild the Crystal Palace dire as the 25,000 athletics stadium. Both ideas show that long term the current London stadium has huge problems in to the future with the fabric of the building.
