Day 7 walking Scotland's West Highland Way trail from Glencoe Mountain Resort to MacDonald's camping in Kinlochleven. This is the first half of day 7 and includes the climb up Devil's Staircase.
I leave my cozy hobbit house microlodge at Glencoe Mountain Resort and have a (mostly) healthy breakfast at the resort before rejoining the West Highland Way.
I cross the busy road, then walk by the Kingshouse Hotel. The trail parallels the road for a while, then turns into the mountains. Walking along the busy road is a minor annoyance which you can overlook because of the amazing highland scenery all around.
Ahead looms the ominously named 'Devil's Staircase'. Most people say it's not as bad as they feared. It's not tricky like the sections along Loch Lomond - there's no scrambling involved. It's a very long, steady uphill climb. Personally, I hate long, steady, uphill climbs so this definitely wasn't my favorite section of trail, but I made it - and the stunning scenery makes it completely worthwhile. I did stop to catch my breath once or twice! Watch the video to get a look at the climb from Glencoe up Devil's Staircase.
I stop near the top while I still have views out over where I cam from, and have a snack and a rest before continuing on.
In this video you'll get to see the stunning Scottish highlands scenery. Many people recognized the Glen Coe area from the James Bond movie Skyfall. You'll also get to see what Devil's Staircase is like so you can decide for yourself if it deserves the name!

I'm an American and a solo woman hiker who walked the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. This is a beautiful trail, and safe to do for solo hikers. It was much more 'civilized' than I'm accustomed to on my hiking and backpacking trips! This was my first trip to Scotland.
Locations: Glen Coe, Glencoe, Kingshouse Hotel, Glencoe Mountain Resort, hobbit house microlodge, Devil's Staircase, Scotland
Things you need:
Guidebook: amzn.to/3rBZCeo (The maps in the book are GREAT!)
Map: amzn.to/3MduTOe (The trail is well marked but a 'real' map is great for planning and checking distances)

The views are stunning - you did a great job capturing the upcoming climb from the distance and then showing what the uphill reality is up close.

Thank you so much for by far THE best video log of the WHW. We now feel much better prepared for our trip in June. Well done Donna!

I’m really enjoying your videos! We are hiking the trail in early September and your videos really show what we will experience hiking the trail - especially the difficult parts along loch lomand and the devils staircase. Thanks again for posting your videos!

How historic is this. you actually caught the passing of QE2 on her journey South for her funeral. She served her people well. Your journey is also a beacon for the people who are not in their first flush of youth. ❤❤

I though going in September it wouldn't be that busy, but it was. The weather was great though - not too hot or too cold. A bit windy at the top, but it was a great day!

Makes you puff! I'm going to do with my dog in a couple of weeks time if not too much snow.

It's tough but it's worth it for the view of the Mamores. If you get a view! 🙂

Did it seem very steep when you hiked up it?
@SomeBoldAdventure
@SomeBoldAdventure 3 месяца назад
No, not really. I mean it's steep enough to leave me winded, but it wasn't so steep that it's a strain on the muscles or anything. It's not technically hard, just long.

It's not terrible. If you can manage Conic Hill and the stretch along Loch Lomond, you can do this for sure. I had to catch my breath a couple of times, but it's not too hard if you do that. Well, some people may not *need* to do that, but I definitely did:) Have a great time!

@@SomeBoldAdventure oh I will def have to catch me breath a few times 😂,I’m 62 not the fittest but started to do some walking everyday ,me and my middle daughter are doing it for the Birmingham kids hospital,we did climb snow at night last year ,that was hard but well worth it

Amazing views 😍. Was the devils staircase as bad as folk make out ?
@SomeBoldAdventure
@SomeBoldAdventure Год назад
Full disclaimer: I REALLY hate going uphill. I get a bad attitude, I hate hiking, and I re-think all my life choices that brought me there. I generally get over it once I can breathe again. This was hard in that I was REALLY winded, but it wasn't a big strain on the legs, and it wasn't hard the way the rocky section along Loch Lomond is. I had to stop and get my breath a few times, but it was very lovely and I was fine once I could breathe!
