The 2018 edition of the Margaret River Pro will long be remembered as the event that never was. After two rounds of men's competition, and with the ladies making it to the quarter finals, a pair of shark attacks a short drive up the coast saw competition abandoned, with points and prize money split between those still standing in the draw.

Love the whole area. In 1984 spent 6 months there. Cobblestones was uncrowded but the seaweed use to get so thick ya nearly drowned inside it's clutches. Didn't think about sharks then. Older and wiser now, don't think I do it now

Glad the WSL told us about that so that I didn't have to learn it from Red Bull... That's right, they didn't say a word!? It's life; you will see a shark, you'll leave a beach just before an attack, show up at another beach after an attack, but they're not going too *eat* you. Red Bull Surfing news team 👏🏼👍🏼🤙🏼

I only go to WSL site for rankings or watch it on RU-vid. I checked their site and there was no mention of the event, other than cancelled. I don't do social media, I completely quit using that 4 years ago and all because it makes people want to post the dumbest things just for likes... They wouldn't have anything to say, except they fill it full of crap to act like they're doing stuff. That and data scraping...

Wsl have a drone operator flying around the whole event surely they'd spot a shark and they could chase it off with a ski. Definitely over the top to cancel the event

well the batteries can only last up to a max of 30 mins thats with optimal conditions but if you factor wind into the equation the motors work harder to keep the drone still which equals more juice (batteries could only last anywhere from 20-25 mins) which depending on how long a heat goes for that can be pretty hard to manage

Ya, some people take there chances . One day guy got attacked on south side of this estuary . Rangers said no surfing. The left was firing so good friends just went back out . I didn't . I said 1 session was ENOUOH for today. It's always a gamble when it's white territory. Actually risking your life to get pitted. That should tell you how important surfing is to some people .
