Lessons learned the hard way, never assume what other states do is right when fishing regulations are concerned, always check the states regulations yourself. However I still can not find it published anywhere on the West Virginia official website, so its still a grey area for me and many others who fish the Ohio river. But I would like to apologize to the State of west Virginia for the mishap that happened as it was a case of a grey area and not meant as a intentional or malicious act.

For all who want to know......this is how a true Gentleman and Sportsman shows respect for his sport and sets an example for others to follow. Even as his hopes of the state record faded away, he showed poise and control and gave his sport the respect he deserves himself! My hat's off to you Mr. Douglas!

thanks, we did not weigh it after i found out it wouldn't count as the state record. it wasn't my biggest fish i had ever caught so i wasn't interested in weighing it if it didn't count. But it was high 50's to 60ish just by guessing. however it was the most exciting fish i have ever caught.

I live in point pleasant west Virginia which is directly across the river from gallipolis Ohio. I didn't have a clue that the agreement to reciprocate only applied to residents of the state. In my opinion, and I'm nobody, you are the rightful holder of that record. You took the bad news very well though and should be proud of the way you conducted yourself. The law is something that should be explained in detail at the time you are purchasing a license and they realize you are not a resident of the state. The problem is that most of the people/ businesses selling the license do not have this knowledge. Sorry that this education came at such a cost. Thanks for getting this info out there. And like I say you are the rightful holder of this record.

Yes sir it is. They have really used it to boost the economy here. They have a festival here every September and people come from all over the U.S. and other countries as well. There is a mothman museum on main street as well.

***** sorry to not reply for so long, I just didn't see this comment. Personally, I think its myth. But that's not to say there aren't things like that out there. There are thousands of different species of animals discovered on our planet every year. But I have met the woman who was the first one to see and first one to report seeing it. It was at a time when psychedelic drugs were a big part of the culture, and I think that may have had to do something to do with it.

Here is my issue, if you were in a tournament why didnt they explain the rule to you?? I am an Ohio resident and I recently bought an out of state license for Illinois and nothing was explained to us, we have had to consult the fishing regs for the rules. My hats off to you for the way you handled yourself!!!

Steve I caught a 75 pounder out of the Ohio and was told I would have had the state record for wv. This video makes me feel better 🤣. I only my had my Ohio license at the time too bc I thought that was all I needed. I now have both! The fish I'm talking about is my profile pic on here. Great fish btw. I've watched hundreds of your videos and I feel like you have taught me how to catch these big fish here on the Ohio River. So thank you very much for all that you do.

my wife and i would like to thank you for all your videos and trying to get people drifting for cats we landed a 43 pounder in parkersburg but did not know that the state record was only 33 pounds so we didnt contact the dnr i realy regret it but we have plenty of pics and video to enjoy... It was caught on cut bait from a smaller cat. Thanks again for getting use turned on to the sport....

The good thing is that you released your fine catch in order to help sustain this specie of magnificent fish. Same thing happened to me. I was fishing on the Ohio side of the greenup dam in 97 and caught a 29+ lb hybrid striper and only had a ky licence. It didn't count but I did get the fish weighed and was in the April edition of infisherman magazine in 97. Sucks.

thanks! yea there was a new state record set for west Virginia a cpl weeks ago, it was 43.9-inch but there are bluecats that are bigger in that pool. maybe i can catch him again next season. the one i caught in the video was 47 inches long

i live in west virginia and i go fishing behind my house in the WEST FORK and caught a 15 pound channel cat ... almost pulled my pole in thank god for rod holders saved my pole .. Thanks for uploading this video

Unless I missed a small detail, he's completely wrong. Its posted on the WVDNRs website for the State of WV that any person with an Ohio fishing license CAN fish on ANY side of the Ohio river regardless of residency. As far as the record you hold goes, I really have no idea being that you don't have a WV license. But as far as it being illegal like he said it was, he was dead wrong. That shit really burns me. I had senior DNR officer flag me down while I was driving away from the lake because I had fishing poles in the back of my truck. Which is well outside their legal authority. I had my license, but if I follow the rules, so should they. I respect the DNR and what they do, but its pretty important to know your job and its limitations.

Aaron C I had a miami county dnr officer block my car in at Walmart in Piqua ecause I had a tackle box in the back of my car. Demanded to see my fishing license, and I demanded to know where exactly he thought I was fishing.

This is why I keep my snake sticks in my truck here in TX. I'd offer that Mimai county DNR a coral or rattler (seems I always find 'em). I'm a professional trapper and wildlife/venomous reptile removal specialist. I'm always trying to help folks out and I've spoken to game wardens and always offered my services. These guys will turn around and ticket and/ seize your truck/ boat everything because YOU have to prove your innocence. I'm amazed the WV DNR didn't take Steve's boat and truck.

@@kingrider75 He was fishing illegally, pretty easy to see. The biologist (not a warden) who was in the video even said "youve been fishing illegally. I dont write tickets so.." Then said "if you have a tournament coming up be sure to.. " and then they cut im off, I assume he was going to say get the WV license.

Steve, I am stunned. I would be willing to bet, even Lynn and Doc aren't happy with this outcome. Sorry that you didn't get the official record. Guess I better check on the SeaArk tournament to see what licensing I need. Tournament is based in Alton IL, yet ramp and Weigh in is on Missouri side.....

Damn man that sucks! I'm going for the Kansas record largemouth. Current record 11.80 I got a late season spawned out 8.60 last week, I was so disappointed knowing if I caught this fish a couple weeks before it would have been close to the record. But that just gives me an excuse to get back out there and try some more! From one angler to another, happy fishing!

hope u can answer my question! i live in NJ and idk if there are blue catfish in NJ, i have seen some maps for there location but non in NJ. also i love catfish fishing and want to buy a bait cast rod and reel combo! what type of rod specifically what size rod were u using? and what lb test line?

Any suggestions for good bank fishing in the Huntington area, and what kind of bait tackle and the like. My goal is always to catch nice fish but end up settling for striper or channel cats with liver, mostly because of frustration with trying to catch a big one. Any help would be appreciated.

Arkansas State Fishing Records and this is the world blue cat record but apparently there is a lot of new record catfish records so who knows what the record is, 116 lbs 12 ounces, they probably would had taken my truck and boat and a fine. You are lucky.

I was told you can fish on boths sides to a certain point like up creeks and both sides of the river as long as you have a ohio license did you check and make sure it was a vaild rule? Also some kid last month caught the new west Virginia state record. But that's a hell of a fish.

thats weird, as a Kentuckian ive known that the commonwealth's northern border INCLUDES the Ohio river, so that with a Kentucky license i can stand on the Illinois, Indiana, or Ohio bank and fish without any of those states licences. but im a western Kentuckian, and don't go over towards the WV, so I don't know the regs concerning say fishing big sandy or tug fork. Youd think WV and Ohio would have something worked out better than that. Great fish anyways, did you get a final weight on it?

I don't agree with the policy and the implementation they hit you with, but I completely agree with the way you handled the situation and the class that you showed in your video. Instead of ranting and raving about it like is so common now a days, you were a true gentleman. On another note, I love the 10 monster rod holders I got from you a few months ago. They are amazing.

You did NOT fail, sir. (video title)The fish was caught in territorial waters, you were licensed according to your understanding, therefore, it should be recognized. I do understand the need for regulation, but gubmits makes things way too complicated...job security for some folks is my read. Good catch and appreciate that you posted this.

As you said the weigh in site was in OHIO so makes perfect sense to have purchased a OHIO fishing license....you have the catch on video to document it so in my book thats better than a piece of paper anyways. 🎣

Steve. I understand why your fish couldn't be a WV record because of the license system. But you had a Ohio NR license. So why did the biologist say you had been fishing illegally? Were you in the main river channel? Then your Ohio license should be valid to legally fish the river correct?

Hay Steve if you check out google map it shows WV. boreder goes to the ohio bank but I'm with you I didn't know it either.. Did you get to measure the girth and length to get some kind of wieght out of it? Well all and all glad it was returned to fight again another day. DAMN!! It sucks seeing a guy that does so much for the sport, makes quality gear, and takes the time to share so much GREAT information with everyone get screwed on some bullsh*t technicality like that. You handled it with dignity though, great vid! You deserve that record Steve..pisses me off even more that most standing catfish records in the states near me, the fish were not released, here you're releasing the fish and get jipped. I think there is another lesson than can be learned from this video though: Always have the number for the local DNR in your phone before you drop your baits in the water cuz you never know if that record fish could be on the end of your line that day, having that number on hand and getting the biologist there quicker increases the fishes chance of survival. You hold the record in my book, great job!

as i understand our laws in Illinois we can fish boundary water but cant touch the bank of the other state or go up into any tributaries and our Iowa agreement for length limits and possession limits for some fish is stricter. nice fish there but theres bigger and now your "legal"..
