West Wing Season 4 - Josh interviews the replacement for Ainsley Hayes; the interview gets extensive when the White House is locked down after it's shot at.
Yes, I'm annoyed by the dumb people who think that he can only do Chandler. He was very different and good in "Numb" and "Ron Clark" too. I just wish there was more.
I wasn't an avid watcher of West Wing & I didn't know Matthew was on it. This scene itself showcases how brilliant and amazing he was. Not only a comedic actor but dramatic as well. RIP Matthew ❤
Goodbye Mathew Perry. You will be there in every random FRIENDS episode I watch, so thanks for still uplifting us after all these years. Say Hi to Robin Williams when you meet him above!
@Jim Dandy I'm sorry - Friends? Realistic? THIS was realistic. He was wonderful on Friends but sitcoms are a whole different thing.....and nearly always nowhere NEAR realistic.
Always my favorite moment of TWW. And it hits hard today. Matthew was such a talented actor, and he shone in this role, as he did in all other roles. RIP.
Donna makes this scene. Her glance at Josh when Joe says, “...the same amount of time as a Democrat who speaks out against abortion.” How she can’t help but smile when Joe says, “I like public service; I wanna serve and you guys are the only ones left.” “That’s really very sweet. Not to me...” And of course, the classic “HE DOES. He will to others.”
@@iowaboy5326 It'd be great, however it would take both parties at the same time on all levels of government, local, state, and federal, to make that change.
Democrats only stand on principal on television. There's a reason they work so hard to indoctrinate kids. The vast majority of people see through them eventually, like I did. And no, I'm not a republican.
Was shocked and mad when West Wing went off Netflix, but now there's the possibility that enough time has passed that this show will be fresh again in a few years.
If you have "Max" it's on there. I also was very angry about it. If you don't have it, I am sorry. This is one of my favorite shows of all time, I bought it both digitally and in a box set.
This is precisely why I make sure I own great series in physical copies. Studio 60, which stars Bradley and Matt together and is another Sorkin show is never on streaming.
"Because if you're a Republican then you damn well better look like Ainsley Hayes!" Just makes me remember how much I loved Ainsley Hayes... wish Sam had become President and Ainsley been his first lady - how good would that have been? And now there are rumors of a reboot... pretty sure that Emily Proctor is available.
Ohhhh, I like that idea. Sam as president, Ainsley first lady, put CJ in as Secretary of state (keep in mind how old Vinic was) .............they are saying it won't work because times have changed and politic, I think with the right, creative, writers it could.
It's a shame more people didn't comment on this, I think it's way more nuanced and generally a better line than the greater fool speech. I also really like Matt Whatisname (the guy who plays Joe Quincy) and I think he was totally underused.
+Phil Ledwith. - I agree. The complexity and intelligence of great writing never gets old. That is why TWW holds up so well. Many people may disagree with Aaron Sorkin's politics. But, it is hard to deny his talent for great dialogue. With the current political climate, I often show the Why America is not the greatest country in the world speech. Every one is blown away.
True. Matthew Perry was great in this role (probably what got him the Studio 50 gig with Sorkin). Thing is, even with as little as he was used, Joe Quincy brought down the sitting Vice President and was involved in replacing 2 Supreme Court Justices. So, he certainly made the most of the time he had to work with.
America was built on qualities that made one see further than party loyalties. Unfortunately, this fact seems to dwindle. As a transatlantic European, this scares me.
what was SO great that Matthew and starred in studio 60! Also Matt should have been a regular on this show but I took what I could get, superb ! We are watching Matthew xo
What gets me is the question he did not answer truthfully was number 75. I would have given up before I got to that question.Sounds like the only thing they did not ask was what did you have for breakfast.
These are the people with a plan (to get to the WhiteHouse you have to have inordinately good life planning skills) no way a mere 108 page questionairre is gonna faze them!
@@andymitchell9341 Not just someone in their employment. Someone who's very job involves being let in on the deepest, darkest secrets of everyone else in that building.
West Wing 22-26 years later. Sam & Ainsley are married. Doesn't matter which is president. Probably better story line Ainsley is elected. Sam is a senator. Get a top notch cast and the best writers and see if you can catch magic twice in our lifetime.
I've always said if they did a reboot with Sam as President, they'd have to open it with that scene of Bartlet telling him "You're going to run for President one day" when they played chess.
@R. H. Kingpin The imagery of marriage is already shot. Ainsley's character is so strong/smart, any spouse would know this going in. Sam Seaborn could handle it. Emily Proctor and Rob Lowe have chemistry.
Yes and less than 48 hours he found out the VP was having an affair which led to his resignation and also the speaker of the house to temporarily replace Bartlett.
Yeah, and I always found that so sad. Cause the thing that leadership on both sides agreed on, was that they wanted none of it. On the show Bartlett wants reform done- but is in the minority, even in his own party. And so he finds ways to bypass the leadership, including trading ambassadorships and other stuff - and his main ally is a Republican who is an outlier in his party. The one thing the show’s party leadership agreed on, was to let corruption run amok. For a pretty optimistic show, that was kinda dark.
Matthew Perry was always my favorite of the three guys on Friends. I thought he was the best actor too. But I guess his demons destroyed his career. Sad.
it was such a pleasant surprise seeing his name pop up in the beginning of his first episode as a guest star. Doesnt even resemble chandler binds persona
In many states including the District of Columbia, it's illegal to ask a job candidate his political affiliation. Also, it's usually a violation of attorney-client privilege to describe a memo you rendered to a previous employer (since it usually reflects confidential legal advice). Some candidates might not have noticed or spoken up, but a candidate for White House counsel? Joe Quincy was an entertaining character, but this was not the writers' finest hour.
Wrong. As this piece shows; absolutely the finest hour; and we've seen multiple times where out right argumentative questions have been asked by the staff to open up the story. We've also seen whole shows where the question has not been asked and how that manifests and who works it our. In this case it was not only pertinent but made the salient point in Josh's words 'a republican better look like Ainsley Hayes' 'He does' and that no matter what your politics ... no. matter. what. .. you can be on the right team. Writers made this abundantly clear with this coupling.
I concede your point regarding the memo, but we have seen that the White House is exempt from many other workplace laws, so this too may be a gray area.
Well there are numerous electrified train routes (and were back then) that head out of the 5 counties that make up "the city", so maybe he would live in any one of the 12 counties that have electrified rail service into and out of the city in Long Island, main land New York, or northern NJ.
Funny how quickly times change, totally sexist thing to say about Ainsley Haynes, an implication that she got the job because she was attractive. Throw away line not so long ago, now one that would ruffle some feathers. The great and interesting part, is that I think it's progress, and others think it's a sad turn. Who's right?
These aren't Congressmen we're talking about, they're public servants. Granted they're on the Senior Executive Service scale and making (then) $130K+... except for Donna, she's probably like GS-11 or something. But still, they aren't the ones selling a vote for some big corp.
There are still a few who find public service in lieu of personal wealth to be rewarding. Cops and firefighters. Soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Teachers. And, though I am a staunch critic of religion, I have to include clergy on that list. Belief in, and in service of, higher ideals.
In real life, CSI:Miami. In the show, she was offered a promotion. And I think if you listen closely to one of the season 7 episodes she ended up being in the running for special counsel or something.
@Michael Moretti Not to ruin your fictional story line to fit your narrative, but that wasn't the case at all. Joe Quincy actually plays a large role in the episodes he is in. He uncovers that the VP is having an affair and giving out classified information to said woman. He also is important in getting two people nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court, one of which was a Democratic woman to take over as Chief Justice. I'd say he did a bit more than pad his CV but nice try, I guess.
@Michael Moretti In true youtube fashion, you clearly didn't read what I wrote. You just saw a reply, skimmed, and tried to squawk. I never said he was a major character. I said he played a large role in the 3 episodes he was in. So, even though he was only in 3 episodes, it wasn't like he was just an extra. Reading comprehension is important.
Mathew Perry’s work here ERASED the GARBAGE of “friends”. Friends was a folly, a show that was FAR TOO overrated and given WAY TOO MUCH credit! Friends wasn’t even a good show…Mathew Perry seems to be the ONLY one with any actually acting acumen here among the friends cast.
If you have to argue with someone every damn day, though, it's probably right that they be good looking. Two things, first you don't mind so much, the fight, second there's an underlying understanding that pretty people are easier to listen to; so if you value challenge in your life - and people in the white house should, then any way you can be made to listen to the opposite point should be taken advantage of. Also .. not sexist per se, but is there a beauty-ist? Like agist is for old people?
