Ruth Avery sailing by drone is by far the one thing I could watch for hours , she is almost mesmerizing , there is something to say about a solid wooden mast/Gaff rigging and a nicely shaped bottom.
Thanks for the shout brotha!🙏 It's a shame we left that day, I would've loved to have picked your brain on the self steerage. We're Still hand steering. Fair winds big dig
Great, Kevin, thanks. Always good to see the drone/deck footage of boat manoeuvres. Looks like a beautiful place, glad you got the vibe again once you got going.
Your video footage on deck while sailing is always amazing, Kevin. I also loved the drone segments showing Ruth Avery underway. Watching your videos is quite therapeutic after looking at the frozen salt water bay here in Milbridge, Maine. When the temps hover around 0 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8 degrees Celsius) for days on end, everything freezes! Can't wait for the summer season (typically July 4th through July 6th around here).😁
I heard scary words about hard to force yourself to get underway..... dont like the sound of that 😊 I enjoy your excellent videos too much to think of you moving to dry land! another great video. you seem to have the knack for getting the balance of sailing, navigating, boat maintenance, scenery and a little philosophy about right! always something to learn! you are a young guy, I am counting on many more years of "how to sail." 😊
Another great vid this keeps me sane as I watch snow coming down at old orchard beach....keep on truckin ..your in the mode...easy to get going but hard to stop
Wow it's nice to see that warm sunny weather hoping to leave and begin heading south in the next couple weeks, maybe we will get to see you when you're down that way, wishing you the best
I certainly enjoy hearing you describe navigation strategy with an engineless vessel. There are any number of sailboats here on the west coast who routinely motor a couple hundred yards off a steep-to0 rocky point with no bottom, no wind, and a moderate swell running. They should watch your videos.
Yes indeed, I nearly lost the boat once in precisely those conditions, sailed too close to a rocky bluff and the wind went light and the swell was pushing me toward the rocks.
Hi Kevin! I just watched your video, I always do whenever you post a new one. I live in Puerto Rico but on the north coast. Thanks for showing me the coast of Salinas and Cabo Rojo from another perspective, indeed a beautiful one. You’re a heck of a navigator, always sharing your expertise and knowledge of sailing. Fair winds and following seas! 🙏🏽🤙🏽
Hi kev i haven't commented to much lately but rest assured i have been enjoying every video as always you amaze me with your skills. Cheers mate keep them coming.👍👍
Great video as usual. Vieques was supposed to be the Pearl Harbor of the Caribbean until WW2 happened. Only one third of the island was used for bombing practice until the locals protested the Navy bombing after a citizen was killed in 2002. I have been to Vieques ten times and is an excellent place to vacation.
The Navy used Vieques as gunnery practice into the early 80's when I was there. The Navy would pay the farmers a very handsome sum for each of their cows that were accidently killed or injured by the shelling.
The Navy was dropping ordnance on Vieques as recently as the mid-90s I know for sure because some of it came from my boat's 5-inch guns. USS John Rodgers (DD-983). Wasn't really all that long ago they stopped using it as a range. Probably still some depleted uranium rounds buried in the ground there. So bring a Geiger Counter. 😬 Took me a day to realize what I think is the Smokey and the Bandit/Jerry Reed reference in your video title. They're thirsty in the Keys mon.
@@howtosailoceans1423 He was good in the movie The Survivors too, in which the character Wes, who runs the survivalist camp, uttered the profound statement, which may describe you, Sir, "No man's an island, but some men ARE peninsulas." Jerry Reed played the hit man chasing down Robin Williams and Walter Matthau. Highly recommended if you've not seen it.
Last time I was at Vieques, the kayak rental operator told us not to go ashore. The same is true about Deer island. You should be thinking Deer...in PR, on some island. Well yes , a population was placed there to be used as target practice buy U.S. forces. And, still lives there to this day. Along with all the unexploded ordinance on the island.
You pointed out GBU at about 4:30 (thanks for doing that). A short time later you filmed a double-ender as you came into the anchorage - was that 'Skua', of the Sailing Kittiwake channel?
Did you hang out with S/V GBU? Matt stated on his channel that he’d really like to improve his sailing skills. He seems like a nice guy, but I think he’s really shy. 😂😂👍👍
At 5:20 you mention a marina in Salinas, PR that for $35 you can use the dinghy dock, drop garbage, take showers, etc. Is it $35 per day, week, month? Thanks for the video.
Very enjoyable vid. Would you share what nav software you use on your laptop? And are you happy with it? I presume that is what you use as a chart plotter. Thanks mate.
Mostly OpenCPN, though I also use the NV charts and app where I cannot get charts through OpenCPN. Yes, I have a USB GPS feed for it, which makes it a chart plotter.
Great vid, Kev. Question: What’s the reason you don’t have a jib(s) downhaul rigged? I’ve noticed you always go fwd to take the sails down. Fair winds!
I only have a downhaul for the jib (at the end of the bowsprit), not the staysail, though I've contemplated adding one. It just gets to be a lot of strings ...
Planning to leave for a couple of years (longer, if the money doesn't run out). How do you get to your cash? What's the best bet? Classic bank? Internet bank? Travellers cheques? Dollars hidden in an old sock? All this, knowing that I plan to do this zero electronics. Yes, I do NOT own a cell-phone... Advice? Thanx in advance....
For years I lived off my investments, mostly equity mutual funds, nowadays most of my cash comes from RU-vid and you folks! A major credit card and a debit card is your best bet as far as portable cash. Make sure that you set up automatic payment on your card if you are going to be out of touch for a while, late payments on CC's are murder ...
