A combat veteran funded the Civil War monument dedicated in Westbrook, Maine on July 4, 1917.
Woodbury Kidder Dana joined the 29th Maine Infantry Regiment as a private in November 1863 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1865. Decades later, he and his wife, Mary Dana, paid for Massachusetts sculptor Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson to design a Civil War monument for Westbrook, where the Danas lived.
Kitson designed a 6-foot bronze statue depicting a young Union infantryman on the march, his rifle resting against his right shoulder. The statue went atop a 10-foot granite base placed at the entrance to Riverbank Park on Main Street, where the monument stands to this day.
