Well he plays in natural and harmonic minor, some very western scales. The thing is, he stays a lot on the 5th tone of the scale, so it gives a kind of "phrygian" feel to the music, which, at least in the west, is used to represent the orient (from the Middle East to Japan, very broadly).

Also, reverb. Every video of the chinese flute I've seen on youtube is done with heavy reverb.

just woke up from sleeping all afternoon from 16h bus trip from london back home to germany and as said just woke up with this awesome video ! both flutes sound amazing! i also really like the GuZheng because of its nice sound . Keep is up Mak and have a good day ;)

How to make chinese sound on EVERY BLOW INSTRUMENTS: 1. "Connect" the notes smoothly (single tonguing the first note, then slowly switch to the second note) 2. In a single note, there are still alot of strength level (like shouting and whispering in talking) , just switching between those smoothly will make a short blow-up sound thing that make the music deeper and more "soulful"

Thank you. Just what I needed. A comparison of Chinese and Western Flutes. Big difference in price on Ebay. I was wondering of the different keys the flutes are made in. And to compare different keys. I think I might get a Western anyhow, and consider a Chinese in a different key, as the prices for the cheapies are 5x the price. Im just a noobie, but have this feeling that a nice tone frequency could be soothing for relaxation. Who knows I might learn something more and actually play something other than some soothing tones.

Indian baboo flute is so simple and adorable. Not too big nor small adjustable and some has natural nodes like Carnatic flutes especially, and Hindustani flute has its own texture and beauty in it! Trust me you are gonna love it.

the way to do it is - forget sheet music and don't learn it like learning western music, then use your heart to play, feel the music and play, when you get it, it sounds "asian"

Trung Hieu Tran Handpicked in hong kong (the chinese one), and western flute is bought from online store, forgot which one but it is a big music store in BC.

The Dizi sounds very airy, at first when you tested it I was expecting you to say the dimo needed adjusting, the top notes sound very airy. Great video though, thank you!

Adobe SoundBooth CS5, I actually use the whole CS5 Master Creator set with tons of programs, including Premiere for editing videos and the Media Encoder for rendering the vids in bulk batches.

Couple questions but first, thanks for the informative videos; much appreciated. Can you recommend a good place to get a Dizi or Xiao in the U.S (online). I don't mind if it's overseas, just want to purchase from a reliable supplier that sells *quality* musical instruments. Also, odd question but can you identify the intrument in this video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2LX7QoL1Dxk.html ) that comes in over the strings before the soloist starts playing? It sounds like it might be some sort of a reed instrument, maybe, in the lower range but when it moves up higher it sounds more like a flute to me. The glissandos it can make are really cool.

Obviously, when he plays the so-called "footage" for both the Long Flute and Dizi, there are sound effects mixed in, or should I say, it's "recorded"? Not the natural sounds of the two pieces of instrument. Correct me if I'm wrong!

it’s the flute membrane also known as 笛膜.. dimo is a thin flimsy fiber applied on the membrane hole of the dizi . Giving the dizi a characteristic buzzing timber sound.

Reverb and a small amount of delay after the sound has gone in through the mic. This is normal as it brings out the best in the flute
