I've purchased this book, this week as it's on an ebook deal, 99p is an incentive. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for this wonderful discussion. I just adore this slim novel, and I'm so glad to see Tilly and Roz giving the book the attention it deserves. Maroo does such a fantastic job with silences within a family because those silences happen after a family death. So often adults will not talk about a parent's death with the children. I'm also so perplexed by the people who dnf or dislike the book. How can a reader not perceive the characters' emotions? So baffling.---Chris

That's a really good point about the silences Chris. And they are a hard thing for a writer convey successfully.

I'm glad to see this book getting some love. I love the contrast of navigating grief, emotions, and reading others emotions (within the family) with that of a sport where there are set rules and set expectations on how to respond. There is so much I loved about this book. For a short book, there is a lot depth and beauty packed into it.

Great discussion ladies! I have had this on my shelf since it was nominated for the Booker last year. Of course I went and read many other things in the mean time. I might start it this weekend.

That's good to hear. I was starting to be really bemused by the naysayers on this.

I usually avoid child narrators too. Or otherwise hampered or unreliable ones. Give me omniscience! 🤔😂 This review reminds me not to always give in to prejudices.
