Maryland Thunder, as she's called, is the affectionate nickname for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's very own 1309. On the first weekend of November 2022, the Trains Magazine hosted a photo charter featuring the famed locomotive with eight hoppers and a caboose in tow. For the first time since the retirement of beloved locomotive 734, steam photo freights were documented at historic locations on the 16 mile route to Frostburg.
Western Maryland 1309 is a 2-6-6-2 articulated mallet locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works 1949 and is the last steam locomotive constructed by the once mighty builder. Delivered to the Chesapeake & Ohio in the same year, 1309 was immediately pressed into service, pulling long and heavy coal trains up the gruesome mountain grades of West Virginia and Kentucky. After a mere 7 years, 1309 was retired in 1956 being stored until 1972, when she was acquired by the B&O Railroad Museum. In 2014, the WMSR acquired the 1309, but she wouldn't run until New Years Eve 2020, moving under her own power for the first time in 64 years. The project faced numerous setbacks and funding issues, but by the end of 2021, the locomotive was deemed well enough to pull revenue trains.
In memory of Jim Wrinn, editor of Trains Magazine of 17 years and avid rail preservationist.

GREAT video! The couple times she was laboring and then I THINK I heard the ole girl slip 3 different times! WOW! and then the chuff rate changing from what seems to be going from Mallet to Simple Articulate mode is GREAT too! AQWESOME in any case! LOVE the chuff sound. THATS STEAM at its BEST!

Thank you!! At multiple times in the video you can hear when the engine would normally switch into compound, but is left in simple for a more impressive show.

Incredible video, absolutely amazing footage! On a side note, we refer to her as Super Choo. Maryland Thunder was more adopted by newspapers before she was put into service…

This is a huge locomotive. Is it the second largest operating steam?

I would imagine so, although it seems at times the runbys were too repetitive.

Let’s not forget that she’s a proud C&O engine, but the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad did a great job restoring her in the shape she’s in now.

Does anyone else think 'Maryland Thunder' sounds too similar to Mountain Thunder, the nickname for 734? Couldn't they come up with something more original or clever? I don't mean to nag, it's just something that crossed my mind.

Yeah, to be honest I like her other nickname more, "Beast of the East."

Does anyone know where the hoppers after the C&O one came from? I didn't think WMSR had that many of that kind, I know they used to have a more modern grey one back when 734 pulled freights.
@TrainChamber
@TrainChamber Год назад
To my knowledge they came mainly from CSX but im not too sure about that.

Why does she have that hooter whistle back on her that sounds eerie and spooky like a ghost train from the past? Sounds exactly like N&W 1218! Anyway well done!
@TrainChamber
@TrainChamber Год назад
Thank you! I could be mistaken, but I've heard the whistle on 1309 in this video is from an N&W A Class.
@CaptainCrutch
@CaptainCrutch Год назад
The hooter was back on at the request of Trains Magazine. This exact Hooter is from N&W 1204, one of 1218’s older sisters.

@@CaptainCrutch Oh yeah, N&W Class A 1218 is in Roanoke, Virginia on current display as of today at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Sister 1204 was sadly scrapped!
