Matt, I also have a GWS 6'6" Badger with a 3 oz. overfill, I like it very much. I favor the 14:55 WM bags over several other top brands that I also own. My first "good" down bag I bought was in 1972. Learned a good lesson with that one, don't buy a top zip bag. Heat rises and no draft tube can hold that heat in. Funny, it is all the fad again. Also, top zip bags stand up off the sleeper and air moves up and down over you, not good. Frank
Man Frank, sounds like you got bit by the same bug I did! Of all the bags I've owned, I never bought a center zip bag. I know they are popular with side sleepers that have the bag "roll with them" so they are never lying on the zipper. What you said makes sense. Warm air rises. Thanks for sharing that experience! P.S. I've spent more nights in my Badger GWS with overfill, than any other bag I own. It is truly amazing.
I am also a Western Mountaineering fan. My 6'6" Puma GWS with a 5 oz. overfill has 11 inches of lift. Taken with a ruler laying over the top and using another ruler making sure I get both sides the same. The low point just above the foot box is 10.25 inches Careful to make sure it has no "air pockets" inside bumping up the measurement. The only other bag with WM's quality is a 1979 Down Home Snow Bunting custom made by Chuck Kennedy . But the down back then was not as good. Frank
Man that's great! I'm not familiar with Chuck Kennedy. I will have to look into this bag as it sounds like it was the "Bees Knees" for the time. Hey, thanks for watching and enjoy that Puma every chance you get! Matt
Hey Matt, Another amazing in-depth review of our gear! Thanks for being a brand ambassador and a wealth of knowledge- Happy Trails Western Mountaineering
You made me look at my 5º rated Antelope - it has the one top down filled draft tube which has been OK for me. I've never felt or noticed the zipper because my knee slipped under the upper (only) draft tube. Yes, specifically, wanted the Gore Windstopper outer fabric which is on my Antelope WM sleeping bag. The Antelope is one of the few bags that come in a "short" 5'6" length which is just right for lil ole MEeee @ 5'3" & 108#. Warm Regards fro Reno, Nevada.
@@mattsmountainmadness Be sure to shop at Hermit's Hut for a FREE overfill. Looks like they're sold out of most all WM sleeping bags at this time so you might have to wait a while.
Matt... thx 4 this one, too... I'ld rather prefer the semi-rectangular ones for the sane reasons you kept explaning.... in case I was to expand my collection
New to backpacking. Love your reviews. I'm on the heavy side and thinking of getting the Western Mountaineering Terralite. Will you ever do a review on it? Thanks
You are in luck! We bought my boss one for Christmas. I think he might let me borrow it to do a review. Stay tuned, it is an ideal bag for a heavier person. Which my boss is. Thanks for watching, I'll try to expediate the review for you, as others have asked about this bag as well. Take care, Matt
