@Drew. Professional critique should be appreciated. Just comparing from 40 years ago. Also todays horses need to be more practical because they are multi-purpose nowadays. Example look at how muck stress is being put on the horses joints and back. This can do as much damage as horse racing on them.
these horses look great. wish they'd show like this at a lower levelisthe top line on these is truly level and they are moving along. They need to be sure they track properly. Judges always overlook the horse with it hip so far to the inside that outside hind is to the inside of the inside front!
The thing I don't like is the sideways but forward movement. QH pleasure has improved in the last two years from the peanut pushing-crippled hobble way of going but they still need true forward movement and take that slanted sideways way of going out of the training process. You can see in Aron's horse how it throws the inside front out to the side instead of that leg moving underneath of the body.
Okay, people need to shut their frigging mouths. The head bob happens because the horse has lift and comes back underneath the person. So when they go up, they're coming back under the person and when they go down it's just the next part of the lope. There's also nothing wrong with the jog, this horse just has very dainty steps. A lot of the pleasure horses now are built more dainty which isn't the best for barrels or other western "cowboy" events. Which pleasure horses don't do that anyway so, you know, that's how breeders want them to move more. Also, I was reading comments and people saying how when they ride, they wanna feel like they're going somewhere not just for a pleasure ride . Hmmmm, the whole point of western pleasure is supposed to be that you and the horse look relaxed and you are happy going for a slow ride everywhere but nowhere at the same time. They're supposed to be like a horse grandma could ride lol. Also, Western Pleasure horses have a lot more muscle than alot of other horses I've seen. (Reiners too) WP horses use every single muscle in their body and work harder than any barrel horse. But anyway, the side ways movement that everyone is hating on is two tracking, they arent really moving sideways you dimwits, their front inside foot and back outside foot are in line or at least close, this helps with lift. You know I could just go on but people are...I don't even know, I can't explain everything in one comment lol!
I’m so glad to see this situation of quarter horses barely moving at jogs and lopes being corrected. The same issue with cantering in front and jogging behind. It has always been in the rule book how to do it correctly, but many jusges were pinning horses where between moving so slow and dragging their noses in their dirt - you felt like you needed to get in the ring and hold him up or push him along. When you are sitting on the rail, and you find yourself pushing the horses along, it isn’t fun. It can’t. e fun for the horse or rider. Try yourself to move like some of these horses in the ring today super slow and in just a couple strides you will be tired. It feels much better to move out. If AQHA can get them up level with the withers or just slightly below and actually moving out, it will be be much interesting for the crowd. i watch a western class and in couple minutes, I’m so bored waiting for them to complete one round of the arena. So great clinic and super comments!
Funny his mentioning American Pharoah and Rachel Alexandra. I always want a foal out of those two. I agree with the choppy mixed gait stuff. That really annoys me when they can't move out. Also 40 years ago you call a gait and we went right into it not waiting 30 seconds to ser if the judge sees us smiling or not.
But they are not trotting, they are jogging. It is a different gate. In a jog, all four feet should be flat on the ground for a moment and there is no moment of suspension. In a trot, there should be a moment of suspension.
Collection??!! Ha. NO. True collection is the lowering of the hocks in a state where there is self carriage. Ever wonder why your horses break down? Well teach the horse to start pushing from behind. Round is not just in the neck! It's the whole body. Poll to tail! And spurring doesn't create collection it just dulls the horse after awhile. Why don't you start using you seat Gil!.
If he uses spurs and FEET, he doesn't have to use leg and seat to move the horse. The spur becomes the "aid" to move forward into the bridle, which then gets picked at, as in a half halt, but a far cry from it.
@@aolhorsebiz OR, you could have a horse that has energy and drive and doesn't need spurs to keep him moving! It is possible to have a horse with energy and drive that is also relaxed and under control. What is more pleasurable to ride; a horse who needs to be constantly kicked to keep him moving, or a horse that moves out with energy and ease?
Even nearly four years later, these “trainers” just think this awful movement is so beautiful and the judges have no choice but to place them. I swear these so called trainers don’t know what a balance horse looks or feels like. And they have awful horsemanship too.
None of these horses are moving in a fluid motion. In a lope or canter the head should not bob up and down. These so called lopes in this video, the horses look like they are limping. The jog they are pulling themselves along with their shoulders. No engagement from behind. I want to feel like I'm going somewhere not the feel that it's going to feel like the horse is going to take forever and it may break down before I get there. The horse is suppose to be a pleasure to ride.
+Kayleigh zartman They are not broken, this is what Western Pleasure is supposed to look like. This is the current trend that is to be presented in the show pen. These horses are naturally slow movers, just like my mare I have at home. She's been slow ever since we brought her home as a yearling..not even riding her yet. The most important thing is, these horses have true, rhythmic gaits, smooth consistant cadence, and they look easy to ride like the guy said. So no, these horses are not "broken", they are just extremely well trained.
+Kayleigh zartman the views of English horses in the western performance horse industry are basically the opposite. We tend to see English horses as unruly and out of control. But it all comes down to preference in the end. These horses are gorgeous movers there's no doubt.
he's quite tall, but he's thin so it's not too much weight for the horse. I feel like most men look a little bigger on horses because they're naturally taller than women
I know I am old, don't hold that against me. But seems to me that the stock breed horses (in general now) used to have mostly the same rules for WP. And somewhere in the rules, it stated that the jog and lope, should be a "ground covering gait". It would take these horses days to get anywhere at the rate they travel. It was about then that peanut rollers came into vogue also, when all the gaits slowed to super slow. Some of that has changed. But the WP horses of today, the crab loping, the bouncing lower legs and spurs rather than using legs, the jiggling the reins with hands in the air, I can do without watching that. It makes me cringe. Sorry to disagree with the way the WP horses move as shown on this video. My viewpoint only.
Unpopular opinion but i think western pleasure actually got even worse since this video. Half the classes the horses face is dang near in the ground and the gaits have slowed even more. I know they ARENT lame, but they look lame with the funny way they hobble with those choppy gaits now a days. So funny he says you wont be able to compete if your horses head is low...and that's what is desired now 😂
I don't care what other people say,you can comment what you want but the lope these horses do is not a lope at all! It's a stupid gait that these horses are forced to do so there owners can win money or a stupid ribbon!
