My Westie has started having some mobility issues on his back left leg, so I bought this dog stairs and ramp to put in the bedroom to prevent his leg problems from getting any worse. ❤️ Watch the unboxing and Sami trying this for the first time!

Our Westy is now 14 years old, and we’ve always encouraged him to use the bench at the end of the bed to jump down and up. When he’s excited, he sometimes jumps from the bed to the floor but we discouraged that by putting a pillow in the place where he jumps down to block him from doing that. You might want to put an area rug at the bottom of the ramp to keep him from slipping. Good for you for taking care of your beloved pup.

Izzy has always had the back leg skip. It has never really bothered her. I have recently had a friend build ramps so she can get up on the couch and bed. She is 12 years old and was starting to have issues. Tried stairs but she refused to use them. Your Sami is so good. Izzy will only go down the ramp off the bed lol. I have to pick her up and only on her terms.😊

I got a Couch Ramp from DoggoRamps for my elderly Wire Fox Terrier. He and I both loved it, so much so that I got a second one to use in the bedroom. When he passed away, I was able to collapse the Ramps and slide them under the bed for storage until I need them for my new WFT pup. They were designed by the owner of Crusoe the Celebrity dachshund for his dachshunds. Pricey but well worth it.

Thank you for sharing this video, Miruna. Duncan has been skipping his back left leg for months (he's just a year now). Until now, I actually thought it was incredibly cute and call him "Hop-a-long" occasionally. It seemed like his little personality quirk. It wasn't until you mentioned patella problems that I looked up "skipping." 🤕We'll have the vet check him. We have these exact stairs (with a fourth riser) for the bed. We opted for foam/fabric stairs for the sofa. He prefers those because he can slide down them on his belly after a nap and do a big stretch. 🥰 I hope these stairs prevent Sami's "skipping" from progressing. 🤗

Hi Melissa, I am so, so glad that this video helped! 🥰 I hope Duncan has nothing (like Sami, after his checkup seemed to indicate), but if he has patella problems it's good to know early on. From my knowledge many dogs live just fine with stage 1 or 2 of patella luxation (and for later stages I heard surgery can fix it completely). The foam stairs sound great for the sofa (less risk of us humans bumping into them, was my first thought) and I can just imagine how adorable Duncan looks stretching on them, awww😍❤

I have stairs for the bed and couch for Taz, who is 9! He uses them all the time! Such a piece of mind knowing he won’t get hurt! Sami will get to where he will always use them!

First, he is adorable! Second, that looks like a very sturdy ramp--once he gets used to it, he will prefer it. Third, can I also recommend using more rugs around the house? Slippery surfaces put a lot of strain on their ligaments, as they have to use more strength not to splay out. When he reached 16, mine could not stand in front of his food without his legs splaying. So I had rugs everywhere. Especially around the landing area of the ramp, on the stairs of the house (I used thick treads), ie anywhere there is impact, and along most corridors that he used.

Hi Miruna!.we had dog stairs for Candi . my ex - husband and I had a king size bed , mainly so Candi could sleep with us . It was very high so we got dog stairs for her . It took awhile for Candi to get used to them , but she did . Sami will be fine using stairs.

I had one for my girl. It was a soft one, I used for the couch and only got when she was older and it helped her a lot. I've got to get my corgi to use it. She has little legs also.

Yes, this must be great for corgis too. I am thinking now that the soft one must be nice too, especially by the couch where we can bump into it (us, humans) 😅

We have stairs for the bed also as it's quite high. Our older Westie, Banjo, is very proficient; our Westie puppy, Arrow, does well going down them but is still a little skittish walking up the stairs but I know he will soon learn. I absolutely love these videos. Thank you for allowing us to follow Sami and his adventures!
@WestieVibes
@WestieVibes 2 года назад
That's awesome! 😍 Arrow also has that energy and "I'm invincible" puppy mindset, so I imagine he'll take longer to get used to using the stairs 😄 I am so happy to hear that, thanks so much for your kind words, it means a lot!

I must tell you that Sami is a gorgeous Westie (which of course you already know)! We really enjoy your videos, the are informative and adorable! We have steps for our boys as our bed is quite high too. May I suggest a rug at the bottom of Sami’s steps? Like you, we have hard flooring surfaces and a rug helps to keep them from sliding when “landing”. Less chance of them getting injured. Just a thought. Can’t wait to see more Sami videos!

I don’t have stairs, but have foot stools at the couch and bed which cut the distance to the floor by half and don’t take up as much room as stairs. Stairs would be better.

Awesome video, thank you! Would be interested to know how often you wash Sami to be able to allow him into bed 😊 he always looks very clean! But with my westie full wash is such a laborious task, he is especially not a fan of the hair drier!
@WestieVibes
@WestieVibes 2 года назад
Thank you! 😍 Haha, I know what you mean! I used to wash him weekly because of allergies, but lately it's only every 2-3 weeks. I do use cleaning wipes almost every night before bed though, they clean well and no need for drier 😃 They clean the paws too, sometimes I use them instead of washing his paws because he hates having wet paws and he will lick them to "dry" them off 🙄😅 (the ones I use are from Pogy's on Amazon).

@@WestieVibes thank you for the tips! Your video actually made me reconsider my “no-westie in bed” policy and I decided to try a ramp too. I couldn’t find a nice looking steps in my country, but I found a ramp with non-slippery material and additional wooden rails that should prevent sliding. Gonna give it a try 🤞🏻 I figured I only have like 15 years with my teddy bear and connecting with him is more important than some additional cleaning measures I will have to take!

Unfortunately, my two Westies refuse to use stairs. Sophie, the oldest dog, uses the carpet to jump up on my daughter’s bed…her bed is close to the floor. Lola, well, she’s all puppy, and jumps on everything…like a Mexican jumping bean. Sami’s better t try trained than my two clowns!😂💕

I watched the video and when I purchase my westie Cali I will also purchase the steps at Amazon. Thanks for sharing the video. Looking forward to the next video. I have wires that connect my WiFi and heaters that are exposed and would be a temptation for my puppy. I will need a fence that blocks off wires in the living room (part of the TV connections to the WiFI box, dining room, and also the bedrooms. I do not want my huge TVs to fall on my puppy and also break. Did you have challenges with Sami when he was a puppy chewing everything and exploring the apartment or house?
@WestieVibes
@WestieVibes 2 года назад
Hi Lee! I am glad this video gave you a good idea! Ah yes, good thinking to isolate the space with the wires, as they are a sure temptations for the new puppy. A play pen is great if you have the space or, what I did, is get a crate and train Cali to stay inside the crate as a default. This also does wonders for potty training, as well as keeps the puppy safe when unsupervised. I recommend the soft crate from Amazon Basics, you can get a large one (I got the small one first, then the large one too). I got Sami to sleep in it in the first year and a half, which helped eliminate separation anxiety (he has none), as he was so comfortable staying inside his crate. Hope this helps! 😃
@leearmstrong7268
@leearmstrong7268 2 года назад
@@WestieVibes The crate is a great idea. I was also thinking of having the puppy sleep with me.
@WestieVibes
@WestieVibes 2 года назад
@@leearmstrong7268 I know it's tempting, I went through the same thing 😅 But if you could have the puppy sleep separately in the crate in the first few months, it will help a lot to give the puppy independence and make them more confident and relaxed. It can be in the same room with you, but giving them their own space will teach them to be comfortable on their own, which is so important for the adult they will become.

The stair side is pretty good you got but the rap side looks a little too low from the bed. I have a one step and it's made out of foam he could get on sometime but he can't get get down to much I am thinking of getting him a rap that reaches the bed I saw another video where women puts it sideways near the bed and he gets up on it and gets down off it I'm going to buy him one soon

Yeah, our bed is just too high 😅 It's about 70 cm high and I couldn't find a stair that was this high. However, he got used to it and now uses the stair only. It's great!

Hello! I am writing again to recommend “ALLER-IMMUNE Bites” by Zesty Paws for Sami. (I wrote before but got the name wrong). We have a Westie (Abbey) and this product completely cleared her skin allergies! It’s a heart-shaped chewable given once a day. I feel confident it will work for Sami too! meanwhile, THANKS for your channel 😊 BLESSINGS 2U and Sami!
