Westinghouse 1949 Christmas Appliances Commercial
/ misterselfhelp has hundreds of vintage tv commercials from the 1950's 1960's and 1970's. These old classic commercials were the beginning of a new era and should be preserved for all time.

Just mind, these were made before a lot of safety regulations came up with appliances. There could be surprising things about these fine old machines that you just *need* to pay critical attention to. Perhaps that doesn't apply as much to Westinghouse models (or at least, I hope not due to their earlier good reputation) but listen up: I just bought a Waffle Iron shortly before typing this. It's a General Electric one probably from the early 1960s, and I realized when I took the griddles off (which would be a common and easy thing to do [easy enough for a 4 year old!]) that *there are live wires exposed inside both sides of it.* It works fine, but seeing that just gives me more reason NOT to touch the metal casing. There's plastic to touch, and that's what you're supposed to hold the machine by. Oh, and toasters? I can't speak for *all* models, but the Sunbeam Radiant models are supposedly connected directly to the live main power when you even *just* have it plugged in. There's reason why Grandma told me to *NOT* stick a fork in a toaster. Safety features seem to have been greatly increased by the 1990s, though. It's not as though you can't enjoy these old models, but if you're not going to use it, *HAVE IT UNPLUGGED EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S OFF.* Besides that, you might want to check that they're reliable enough to not burn your house down. Maybe I'm a bit overly cautious here (and I'm not a gigantic vintage appliance enthusiast,) but the idea of old wiring insulation just not holding up in these, which causes electricity arcing, which causes a fire? I find it concerning, at the very least.

I'm watching these commercials because they calm me down. I was really pissed at my mom because my birthcontrol for my PCOS is making my emotions go grr. These ladies voices are calming.

I'd LOVE to have that stand mixer in the background!! Had one just like it 40 years ago that I inherited from my grandmother, but, after a couple of years of having it, the d*mn motor burned out - was the best mixer I've ever owned since!

It was a different time then....anything to help ease the burden of being a housewife was indeed welcome.... Today everybody takes these time savers for granted... If you didn't have all these things...you'd be happy to get them.

its interesting how back then it was probably an honor to receive a new kitchen appliance! Nowadays with most people already owning these things and being the age of popular electronics and such it would be like some white elephant type gift rather.

Four years after rationing and the Great Depression before that. Scrub boards, clotheslines, fireside irons, and woodstoves. Today's wives don't realize how well they have it.

All these comments saying that a woman would be upset if she got these gifts for Christmas....a real woman is happy no matter what she is given.
@cfuller7226
@cfuller7226 6 лет назад
What an idiot! A gift should be personal, not a household drudgery implement. since when were women only rated based on the equipment required to run a home???? there should be a household budget to buy these things. Then the woman would be getting things that are meaningful to her and honor her place in the home. A kitchenaid does n ot do that. Does he get all excited to get a set of wrenches for Christmas? Hell no! He goes out and buys them when he needs them.
@hankaustin7091

I agree with abeautifulmess.. she's absolutely right! a present is a present, no matter what.. afterall, it's the thought the counts, and back when this commercial was made, a woman who considered herself a great housewife cherished well-made appliances that kept her and her family happy. To say someone's an idiot just because they want to make people happy with good cooking is the ignorant and probably a fat-ass lesbian who couldn't give a shit about anything but munching carpet!

These women had little during the Depression, witnessed rationing, scrub boards and woodstoves, and many went without electricity. Receiving these, a washer and dryer, or an electric stove would be better than receiving a microwave oven in the 1970s, or a color television in the 1960s. These were prestige items.

It's apparently a "Vacuum" model, which requires a 2 tier pot system. I tried looking it up on eBay, to see if I could find that model. Here's a video of a G.E. "Vacuum" coffee maker model, which is glass, to better show you how it works: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EJeht9P0Vhk.html

I would love to get appliances or kitchen tools for Xmas vs the beauty stuff I receive every year. I have a young family I'm always on the go I'm at the point in life where you don't have time to put on makeup and do a home facial etc. I'm young in shape and dress decently so makeup is the least of my concerns. I'd rather some appliances to help me keep up with my hubs and kiddos a new toaster shoot even a set of new kitchen knives and spatulas would make me soo happy! And people don't buy you these things cause their embarrassed of what you'd think but man I'd be more grateful for that than $150 Sephora gift that drys out before I even get through a quarter of it.

The greatest generation! When people dressed up in nice clothes for everything! Not t-shirts, pajama pants and flip flops.
@jonathank8057
@jonathank8057 3 года назад
The way a lot of people dress today in public is disgraceful. No pride in grooming or attire. T-shirts are okay. Pajama bottoms should not be seen outside of the house and flip-flops are hideous; they were intended for pool or beach use only. Some people dress like this in restaurants. It's enough to make you lose your appetite.

They sure don't make 'em like they used to. I have a Westinghouse barometer that measures barometric pressure, precipitation, it measures humidity, temperature, also measures cloudiness, polar orbiting, uh, it measures the geostationary satellites, it measures Doppler radar, it measures high-altitude moisture, it measures the frost index, measures typhoon probability, measures water vapor, measures the jet streams measures clear air turbulence, measures the pollen index, it measures sperm count, if you're a farmer it measures crop yield, measures radioactive aerosols, uh, volcanic gases, hydroelectric synchronicity, if you're near the mountains, it measures seismic shockwaves, and for your car it measures oil pressure, tire pressure.
