Liquid damage, beyond economic repair, fair enough Jason. Even tho it wasn’t what you thought, the video was still interesting. I watch for pure entertainment value and you have it in bucket loads. Keep up the great work, try to be a little less apologetic. Know you do great quality work and make content that I am addicted to watching. Have a great holiday season, try not to work too much. All the best in 2024.

What a surprise, something wasnt what it supposed to be. I watch and learn so much from you and your channel that i am actually gaining both courage and the tools to start trying on old scrap-phones. So we will see how that goes. Thanks for your videos and shared knowledge. Merry chrismas from Magnus in Sweden

I chose this device because it had a story & was almost certain to be a "good video". I'm genuinely surprised this phone turned out the way that it did! Upcoming videos will involve actual soldering and possibly even some troubleshooting! 😀

Would an otherwise working iPhone 5 with a not working sim reader have the potential to make for a good video? I have one that I have not used in 6 years collecting dust. Genuinely curious if such a repair would make for a good video.

I guess it went somewhere local first, and because of that stupid sandwich he hot-aired it from the outside to dry it out, ie, cheap repair/not knowledgeable enough for a MB split. Just watched LLT and a Jake with an iPhone15 said his has slower internet rates than other phones, ie, it prob has bad antenna design to couple with their USB2 - lol -.

I took my iPhone X swimming and snorkeling without a case hundreds of times. Same with the 13 pro max I’m on now. How do these fail ? Did the guy disassemble it previously?

It's possible what happened is it was through a repair before it stopped working at the pool or whatever, so the customer concluded that was not relevant. It could have been relevant just a bit. This is a good example of maybe not going too far right away.

If I were you, I would’ve used an ultrasonic cleaner especially the it booted. From there, you could’ve simply tested all functions with used parts

You get to a point where it is a little bit of a lost cause with phones like that. Who knows what else has gone on inside there since somebody has been at the board before, so you're definitely not working with a "we know it was once working" board - that's if it hadn't spent "a few minutes" in a pool picking up detritus and minerals from the water. Good that you got the data, but I think the user needs a new phone, or low expectations that it will last with any actual repair.

I’ve always been of the opinion there should be a policy of “no warranty on anything liquid damaged” Even if you fix it more things normally continue to malfunction over the following weeks and months. You know yourself that ‘liquid damage’ covers a gross and wide categories of “liquids” 🤢🥴🤢🥴🤮🥴🤢🥴

It's always easy to recognize toilet water. The second you begin heating the board the smell becomes obvious! 🤮

Very interesting if it is possible to set up a WIFI server on Linux, a backup hard drive, as soon as you connect to your WIFI, you can copy all the material from the phone. USB2 is a nightmare! (I don't deal with Apple, I assume there is a format that the phone supports)

I really enjoy watching you assess/diagnose the devices then move forward to disassemble, clean up, and create new balls. At the moment the heat melts the solder and the balls form I become totally mesmerized. You are truly a professional and too bad you don't perform repairs on many Androids I would love to have someone like yourself replace my battery and front screen. My S8 is still a wonderful phone. Best wishes and Merry Christmas to you and your family. RichT, Idaho🥰

Does it ever make sense to work out a “no warranty” repair where you discuss the repair with the customer ahead of time like you did for us? Maybe present it to them with the final price and level of doubt that you will have fully repaired it…like, “I’ve removed your data and safely stored it on a flash drive and I can get your phone technically working for $X but I will have to utilize used parts and will be unable to warranty the device or the work”… That way they’re presented with the option to have their phone working even if it would cost as much as a new phone to make it happen lol I’ve done something similar in the home maintenance field but I’ve never had anyone take the offer.
@ststele
@ststele 9 месяцев назад
Sometimes I do. I'm more likely to offer that sort of thing when a device doesn't require a large number of parts and not such a gamble. I tallied this one up pretty quickly to be $100~$150 in parts and that was before considering the buttons, mics, speakers, cameras and front facing components. Even if presented without a warranty, functionality would still be expected and that leads to a never ending repair in these situations. It gets into a mountain of time and that's not even considering the possiblies of board level problems from both liquid damage and also from separating and reassembling the multi-part board. But it is possible, yes. 🙂

Surely, as ‘data recovery’ this is a several hundred dollar job: repairing the phone is irrelevant. I watch Northridge Fix regularly, and this would net him his usual very lucrative ‘data recovery’ charge…
@ststele
@ststele 9 месяцев назад
I didn't charge our full menu price for data recovery in this case but did charge our minimum advertised price for this service. The kicker here was the total size of the data afterwards! Tied up quite a bit of time.

We normally have really good success with UPS but I guess sometimes a package slips though the cracks (literally) and winds up waiting for someone to clean under or behind a machine to find it!

Well that was a very fresh video. 🥳 As soon as you mentioned how easy it was to open and working on _House's Theorem_ (that everybody lies) I immediately thought that the customer had taken it to another fixererer who managed to open it, dry it out and it either worked for a short while and then failed or they couldn't get it back working after the DJ (Dry Job). If it had been sent to you as the first port of call then 4 weeks in a _moist box_ 🤭would have been fun for the components. 😲 I've seen how fast the green crap can grow in a couple of days in that sort of environment. You got the data saved and dodged a bullet. Nicely done Jason. 👍👍

Hi Jason, thanks for the nice story. I myself was waiting now nearly 3 months for a 2-day-express document shipment to arrive in Beijing (from Germany). It only took one day from Cologne to Shenzen (near Hongkong). Next day it was in Incheon, Korea and it arrived safely in Zhenzhou, China the following day, where it decided to rest for 2 1/2 months. Each day it was re-scanned, no move. And suddenly, a few days ago, it continued its journey to Beijing. A wonder!

I have a video clip I recorded a few months ago of an iPhone 11 pro that was new out of the box that a guy drowned. The phone did not have the protective backing peeled off of the adhesive gasket! A total manufacturing defect. Even when it's perfect, they still leak through the ear speaker hole, sim tray slot, dock flex, lower speakers.... certainly not water-proof! :-)
