Lighting fire in wet conditions is a must have skill for any outdoorsman to have. It could save your life and the lives of your mates, its challenging and for anyone who likes to adventure into the wilderness, its a great skill to have tucked away in the toolbelt.
Give it a go in different environments and conditions, if its hammering down you can light the fire inside the billy in the tent before moving it outside.
Keep your eyes peeled for more firelighting and cooking techniques down the track

Great video. Thanks Josh. This is going to come in super handy as I love camping in adverse conditions and am almost always trying to light my fires in the pouring rain. I usually take in a few small pieces of pine kindling to get my fires going but it's weight I don't want so will keep a look out for flax seed stalks and turpentine on my upcoming winter trips. Cheers, Cathy.

Really interesting. I spent my youth attempting to start fires down in the Waikato swamp or backyard. And learned the hard way about sourcing drier bits to start off with, and having a stash of kindling to carefully feed into the fire. Interestingly though I hadn't considered or reflected upon this until know. Nice to know we live in a difficult place to light fires, since it wasn't easy to get fires started. Also explains why wild fires really haven't been common place until pines got planted all around the place, including the dryland environments of the east coasts.

Josh I'm glad you pointed out how tricky it is in damp NZ forests to get a fire going. I've seen so many vids of people starting fires with the ferro rod or whatever with crisp european or north american birch etc and it just doesn't work that way here. I have a telescopic tube that is super great at targeting your breath (even better than your through the fingers technique, which is awesome) for long sustained blasts of oxygen on fires that haven't quite 'caught' yet. Would also love to see a vid of how you'd get a fire going with a ferro rod in these forests too, as there aren't many materials that can take a spark! Long time fan, cheers.

Oi have a lurk at Keeping It Wild, very skilled and knowledgeable young fulla. One of his vids he mentions a tree called Tanekaha, super useful timber but not sure how far south it can be found. This guy can find food anywhere aye. Beech trees usually have something dry low down, bloody handy that.

Makes me feel a bit better: Aussie? My flint rod just works first time. In NZ? So so hard.

Hi Josh. I've got silver Birch at my place. Great hosts for Birch Bolete, edible fungus, but also if you use the outer skin, and not the deeper bark, you can get a pretty good fire going. Not when sap is flowing. Store it in calico cash bags from your local bank. Or cheese bags from your cheese supplier. They pack down flat in the bottom of your pack. Chuck in a book or two of those advertising matches in the bags, and you're good to go. Cheers for the advice. Take care mate.

yeah boss, shes good stuff aye, Has a fungus called Chaga also in the northern hemisphere, you can make tar from the bark, also the cambrian layer is edible, you can also tap it in the springtime and draw a delicious elixir from the sap as it rises, similar to maple syrup. Give it a crack

i just got up & first thing i did was read my local news & head lines were A Motueka family was devastated when their house burned down ,,next article was locals panicked as garage fire burns garage down ,then i get a notification Josh James how to light a fire ,i just thought that was really funny & bizarre timing so maybe Josh you need to make a video showing these Nelson folks on how to not burn your house down because honestly it has been happening a whole lot lately .I don't think these younger generation folk have been taught fire safety & common sense around fires in your home .I feel for them but honestly how the hell are all these people burning their houses down it's happening right across the country they are even dying from it .

We use flax often. We found it can be wet and raining weather for days on end, but the inside of flax stork is always dry, dry enough to start with a ferro.

Chur my bro, where can we watch all those overseas survival programs you're in? I seen a hardcase one when you went up against this US marine and got dropped off on a island in Asia somewhere?. Was hardcase watching that yank go in to full on Rambo mode but ended up tiring himself out and getting dehydrated strugling to gather food and water lmao. While the Kiwi bro was calm and collective with that number 8 wire mentality you was able to make a shalter high off the ground to keep from being mauled by mosquitos, then building a water distiller out of rubbish washed up on the island as well as having the hunter gathering skills and knowledge to crack a mean feed of crabs for you and Rambo when he finally returns from his mission in the jungle with nothing 🤣

Thought you would light from the bottom, in a rain forest environment preheating/drying timber above, heat rises, …. I could be wrong tho….😂
