"To sand or not to sand? That is my question."
KXK Dynamics and I work through a video series discussing more advanced sanding and polishing techniques. Jason Killmer, generally regarded as the best wet sander in the world, and Andy Ward, also known as Proficient X, made the trip to OGHQ to drop some knowledge on me.
In Episode 9, we discuss the difference in polishes and pads used in this series.

These guys are seriously crushing it on this interview. No bias from them. Just their gained knowledge and experience which has helped communicate their results with their process. That's the key I got. Find an efficient process / consistent result and continually perfect that. Find products that fit your process and crush it. Killer content.

Thanks so much for doing this. It really is confusing for a DIY guy. I know you could have kept all this knowledge for yourself so sharing it is very generous. Cheers.

Just ordered that pack of R.I.D. Stixx. I'm excited to understand the tactile feel that was described by Jason. I think this will help me to be less run-n-gun and produce a finer finish faster.

I love this series getting into sanding and this was great insight. I use the m series Of meguiars simply because if anything were to happen I can easily pick them up at any auto parts store last I checked I didn’t see any menzerna or jescar at advance or pep boys and clearly the products work so it’s a convenience factor for me

MOST of the highest end pros use just 100, 205 with 101 on certain situations

LOOOVEEEEEEE IIITT!!! Thanks Matt for doing this! goes to show you that theres no real right or wrong combo. Just use what works for you and what is most comfortable. I like to keep it simple myself - using m105 and m205 for rotary use and Megs MF cutting and finishing combo - These work for me and give me outstanding results!

This sanding process would be a "last resort" for me and ONLY if I absolutely, positively, & unequivocally could not live with a specific scratch or scratches. Even though you and Jason explained and detailed the process very methodically, I'd cringe at putting sand paper to the paint unless I had exhausted all other options. A great series and informative to say the least. I also liked how you & Jason differ in outlooks of detailing. You are all about the products while he is all about the method and not fussy about specific products - just two different approaches I suppose. PS: Got my Jenny delivered, hooked up and ready to rock - a REAL GREAT QUALITY unit!

I'm really getting a lot out of this series, especially where the DA's come in. Great work, those guys are detailing gods lol. I would pay to see them do a full correction on a car... simply amazing work and technique.

So I have to forget everything I’ve learnt in the last 10 years - my head hurts! Their polishing method makes sense and is so much quicker. So if I have this right, they move the polisher quicker but with pressure and only a few sets as long sets allow the spent polish/clear coat to spoil the finish.

Problem with filling is that you didn't get the scratch out...and the filling goes away

Diff between 105 & 100 is that 105 is intended to be short cycled. Most run polisher longer than 105 was intended for. So most use 100 and not 105
@nwbklr
@nwbklr 5 лет назад
What do you mean by, “short cycled”? I just hand wet sanded 1000, 2000, 2500 then 3000 a 4 inch vertical scuff/scratch. And I was recommended the 105 to finish that off. So I’m really curious now cause the guy in the video says he doesn’t even use it.

Let's say I use a yellow foam rupes polish pad. Do I blow out the polish after each pass the same way o blow out compound from a microfiber cutting pad? Or do I just add polish to foam pad and keep polishing?
@ObsessedGarage

I blow it foam after every other set of passes.

These guys are so humble compared to the "shine doctor" guy on Instagram who constantly touts that DA's are like training wheels and you're not a real "detailer" if you don't buy his $900 class.

Question for anyone who feels like they want to answer. Would a yellow rupes suffice in finishing in most cases, or do I want to step up to a white one with meg's 205 for example? I see a lot of people doing sonax perfect finish for example, with a yellow rupes. And that works awesome as a one step polish (decent cutting and finish) - Let's say I do a 6mo old car. And I do Sonax perfect finish with a yellow pad. But I want to do a finishing stage as well, would one still use a yellow rupes pad with meg's 205, or would I go for a white rupes pad?
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 6 лет назад
Sometimes the slightly stiffer pad finishes better than the white. But you just have to give it a try on that particular paint to see how it reacts.
@Doggepp
@Doggepp 6 лет назад
Okay, got it. It seems like the yellow pad is justed in 9/10 of the cases from what i've seen. But as they/you explain in this video, there is no paint or car that is the same, so I have to test. Thanks
@danlc95
@danlc95 6 лет назад
You might like either the Rupes or Meguiar's microfiber finishing pads with M205 for a one step. M86 Solo is actually positioned between M105 and M205 in terms of aggression, and still features the non diminishing abrasives. M86 was actually the first modern SMAT abrasive liquid. M86 on the Yellow foam might also work for you as a one step too.
@Doggepp

Thanks for the reply! I have already bought some new stuff now, and tested the perfect finish+yellow pad combo, and it has worked out amazing in most cases. But I will try some meguiars in the future

M105 = dog shit M205 = dog shit ALL you need for a cutting AND polish is 3d-one literally that’s it, and USUALLY only a medium cut pad with most paints will get you a near perfect finish.
