That's Michigan for you. Don't like the weather, stick around it will change. Have seen it sunny and 50 at noon, and below freezing and a couple of inches of snow by dinner.

Kip, if you would run your unloader more level in the silo it would keep the walls clean..crowning the center pulls it away from the edge of the silo and causes the wall build up

I think it's inevitable with the deep freeze & thaw and high dew point?! I'm guessing it got stuck n dug a hole!
@57fitter
@57fitter 7 месяцев назад
When it's that cold it doesn't matter what you do. It sticks on the wall and gets wider as you lower it. Eventually it gets hung up.

Can’t run them flat. You need some crown or it won’t run because the transmission will start to drag.

Only way you can run them flat is with a surface drive unloader

Every year you get older the more you’re going to hate that feeding system. Hopefully the weather changes for the better.

It seems like bunk silo"s are the way to go. Upright silo"s are a young man"s thing. Feeding the milking cows may have to be redesigned. If a mixer wagon could unload onto the silo conveyor, with some alteration, that may, still be used.

I've never spread plastic over the silage in an upright silo. Never had a foot thick crust of mold to mix into the feed with an upright. Never seen a few electric motors do a days worth of feeding with a bunk silo either.

50 years ago they had a tool to hold the chain while you hammer the links apart because the old manure spreader s used that type chain for the apron chain

Suggestion, build awning above stall fasteners out long enough to get water far enough out from building if possible. No need to reburm soil and have to remove to r&r stalls.

My Dad taught us that tool is called a Banging thing. lol, Actually called a chain detacher, and they are only about $30 to buy the tool, Started using one when I was about 12 to take apart the chains on the old Big Dutchman poultry feeder chains. Little bit of maintenance to the wear items keeps them running!

There are problems with all systems for storing but I think silos are the most dangerous. When I was young and lived on a farm we had no silos. My dad always warned me to never go in one. Too many people die either repairing or just using them. They were all we knew for so many years and now we know how unsafe they are. I see you taking the lead and being in charge of those silos and I don’t see you teaching the next generation. It just goes to show your character and wisdom. Better they don’t know and then you can make plans for a less dangerous system. You are such a good man in all you do. Please be careful and get the farm moving toward a safer system. Love your channel from an old farm girl.

Thanks for another great video Kip. It was most interesting. Wow. The wet moist weather is not helping you Kip. Do not know at your age how you keep up with it Kip. My compliments for how you keep it all going. The silo is a hard manual labor intensive item to keep going in this weather. Hang in there. Your long belt feeding system does not like the weather either. Getting the chain adjusted on the feeding belt takes time and labor also. The wet weather is not helping you Kip. You take care of yourself in this wet Weather also. The silo work is hard also where the unloading equipment has trouble getting it off the silo walls. You have it mastered but I worry about you the older you get. Take care of yourself. How did you come out on the number of cows that were pregnant or not pregnant??????? Got a lot of calves coming??????? Busy time for all of you. Winter weather doubled your work it seems. Hang in there all of you. Thinking of you. Been there done that myself many years ago. Not easy the older you get. Thanks for everything Kip. You all take care and be safe. Worry about all of you in this weather. The Iowa farm boy. Steve. 😊👋👍🙏🙏🇺🇸

Is there cement or gravel under the sand? Our old barn had cement under the stalls because it had been renovated into a freestall barn. Always full of water after a heavy rain. Gravel underneath lets the water drain away

With all due respect, safety first. Running any machine is dangerous and possible disaster can follow by tripping. A loose shoelace or a herat attack can get one ate up by any machine with no one around to shut it down. Eaglegards...
