I wear the O’Neill techno butter 5/4 surfing in new jersey. Now in November. It’s my first season surfing in cold water since I surf in the Philippines and Mexico and I can honestly say that O’Neill superfreak is superior in terms of fit, flexibility and warmth. I’m always cold now I’m really warm and comfy out in the water, even on a windy day. It feels like a 3/2 with its flexibility. (Although I haven’t tried it yet at the peak of winter when surfing while snowing)
Awesome, stoked it’s working out good for you. I agree - I’ve converted my whole wetsuit lineup the the O’Neill Hyperfreaks. I can’t even wear anything else - talk about spoiled lol. Thanks for your comment and enjoy the icy NJ waters.
Yeah thanks for stopping by. For 55 degrees F this wetsuit is perfect. I’d say go for it - your not gonna find a more flexible suit in this thickness. The hood is also the best hood ever. You could wear this suit down to upper 40’s if you needed too.
Yea you can, you can pull it down around your neck. I have kinda a big neck and chin, so it’s doable and I do it, but not the most comfortable for me. Out of all the other wetsuit hoods tho, it is still best. At this point with this suit, I actually prefer to have the hood up, as it’s the most comfortable position after it breaks in some. Which is funny cause I hate hoods usually and never found a good one until this. If you have a skinnier neck or smaller face, should be totally fine when you pull down and work probably awesome.
*but you can’t remove the hood from the suit - if that’s what you meant. It’s attached permanently. This O’Neill Mutant is a good option if you want a detachable hood - but the hood isn’t as good as Hyperfreak hood - us.oneill.com/products/mutant-legend-4-5-3-5-a00-mm-chest-zip-full-w-hood-wetsuit?variant=19736377196613&rmsrc=1&Cj0KCQjw4s-kBhDqARIsAN-ipH2Eo31qz_R5UqQ1fYI96PcZvoW-dDcsP8eA_Nmd-FFYlmVgpL375w4aAjJ3EALw_wcB&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4s-kBhDqARIsAN-ipH2Eo31qz_R5UqQ1fYI96PcZvoW-dDcsP8eA_Nmd-FFYlmVgpL375w4aAjJ3EALw_wcB
Hm depends. What’s your dimensions and what do you usually wear? I’ve found O’Neill suits to be the only ones to fit me really good as standard size for all variations. I’m 5’10 175-185 and the Large is perfect.I’d say since this suit is overall think you’ll could go a little bigger, but it def is the stretchiest 5/4 by far and feels like another brands 4/3.
@@TravisVarga Thanks for the reply. I'm about 5'10, 70kg and quite skinny. I've tried a small but its basically impossible getting in and out, I almost got stuck whilst trying it on in the shop😅, The medium is what I have ordered so I think this should be fine although its slightly bigger than what is recommended on the size chart.👍
@@magnuswickland6415oh the medium is gonna be PERFECT. I always like to be on the low end of the size chart, and that’s where you are. And it’s a thicc suit so better to be bigger than smaller. Esp with the hood. Reckon should fit you like a glove - it’s really an epic suit, def the best option for a flexy 5/4 in the market right now I’d say. Please update me how it goes!
@@magnuswickland6415 That's so epic! Stoked it worked out for you and you dig it. Yea agreed - hands down best 5/4 on the market. Hope it holds up and you keep having fun with it.
I'd say yes. I have friends in the Northeast (Boston, Mass, New York) who have this suit and they love it. One buddy in NY even has two of these so he has a dry one. Guy below this comment also said he surfed it in 47ish (F) so I'd say give it a go. If you want flexy, this is def it. I can barely move in other 5/4's. Only reason I'd say no if you surfed a super windy spot every single day, as their is no smooth skin. But it's so thick that it still does decent in wind. Keep me posted!
@@almmalivree1918 yeah Hyperfreaks - here’s what I usually do - 3/2 in 63 degree water and up, 4/3 in 62 and down - 4/3 hooded in 57/58 and down 5/4 hooded at 55 and down
Usually boots, since water with this wetsuit is likley 56 F and below (I wear booties from 60ish F and below). No gloves until probably 52ish F and below. So with this suit, you'll likely have booties on 99% of the time, and gloves when the water dips to low 50's and below. Hope that helps!
Have owned 5 Hyperfreak comps . Sweet suits regarding flex, weight and performance, but inner liner delaminates and peels off. They really need to fix their materials. Not sure if its the adhesive that holds the inner liner to the neoprene?? but it separates very easily.... all 5 have separated somewhere within a year. The last one i bought had a small patch on the outside chest area that was already delaminated new from the store. Great suits, but the liners fall off faster than any suit i've ever used, in fact i have never had a suit from any other company that had the jersey fall off at all.
Agreed - the liner separation is what happens to me first to. I have around the same amount of Hyperfreaks as you - but I realized the ‘comp’ aka no-zip versions def degrade faster. So now I only buy the cheat zip versions. But true, you sacrifice durability with them being so stretchy. Usually get a year out of them, maybe a little more if warrantied. But..I’ve worn and bought probably 50 wetsuits my whole life. I can only wear these Hyperfreaks now. Even the new Technobutter 4 Hyperfreak Fires are not as stretchy, so I will continue to buy these only until they stop making them (hopefully never..). But can’t argue with your statement..thanks for commenting.
@@TravisVarga same, so hard to back to a less stretchy suit. Plus the body shape is perfect. Just wish they were able to figure out how to keep the materials from separating. Clearly an issue if there are already delaminated spots on new suits on the rack
