Beginners guide to choosing a Wet Suit or Dry Suit.
What you need to know when choosing a Wet Suit or Dry Suit. In this episode Andy discusses what to look for in a Wet Suit or Dry Suit. The materials they're made from and ways in which they keep you warmer in cold water Scuba Diving. How to choose a Wet Suit or Dry Suit guide for the new or inexperienced Diver.
Differences in Diving a Wet Suit or a Dry Suit.
🔴 Warmth - Wet suits do this using a layer of neoprene and a thin layer of water trapped between that and the skin. Dry suits use air and a combination of undergarments. No water to take heat away if a seal is lost and allowed to flush through the suit. With drysuits you can add layers of insulation to slow the loss of body heat.
🔴 Buoyancy - Wetsuits compress with depth and lose some of their inherent buoyancy. Dry suits allow the diver to add air and compensate for the increased pressure at depth. As the wetsuit compresses, it gets thinner and loses insulating capacity. The dry suit does not.
🔴 Weighting - With a dry suit, the amount of buoyancy the suit offers stays more or less constant since the diver has the means to adjust for the increased/decreased pressure. A wetsuit loses buoyancy at depth, a diver can become over weighted due to suit compression.
🔴 Varying conditions - Many divers use their dry suit year round, from warm water locations to under the ice in winter. A wetsuit does not offer that flexibility.
🔴 Purchase cost - With the introduction of new materials and manufacturing competition, a quality entry level dry suit can be had for roughly the same price as a higher end wetsuit. One dry suit will work in numerous environments.
🔴 Cost of ownership - Once a diver buys a wetsuit there is very little maintenance other than proper rinsing. Dry suits require seals to be replaced, leaks attended to, boots or socks replaced, and maybe even the zipper. These costs may be offset by the life of the suit.
✅ Temperature ranges for each suit:
3mm suits* are suitable 19-26 deg Celcius
5mm suits* are suitable 13-21 deg Celcius
6-7mm suits* are suitable 8-16 deg Celcius
Anything colder you are looking at dry suits and under layers
*may require suitable boots, gloves and hood

✅ In my first year of diving I’d wasted a lot of money on kit and equipment that didn't really work for me and the type of diving I wanted to do. It is my hope that these videos will help you spend your money more wisely on kit that will work well for you and your dive buddy and also be future proof for bigger, deeper and longer dives.

For vacation use went from a cheap 3mm suit to that 5mm Fourth Element (quite a bit harder to put on but nice and warm and looks damn good). On cold days I add Thermocline underwear with a hood. Now I’m starting to dive at home (The Netherlands) so I’ve bought a Santi trilam drysuit. I’m glad I took training because the first dives were a challenge, but I can already feel this is going to be very comfortable. And it’s nice to be able to make small trim adjustments with the suit. My main problem has been wearing gloves. For my sidemount rec or tec dives there’s a lot of boltsnapping, and I really miss the dexterity I had when I didn’t wear any. I now use the Santi Smart Gloves system and am trying out different glove materials and undergloves to find some that are warm enough yet thin enough.

Defo so much harder in a dry suit but with the right instruction, the right fit and perseverance it’s the best of a bad situation, thanks for watching!

That’s where I store mine mate. Your manufacturer will advise you the best when you buy it. But I hang mine upside down and inside out until it is bone dry before putting it away.

Hey Andy! I whant to buy my first dry suit trilaminate, shud pick a plastic or a metal zipper? Hand seals with a ring or without a ring? Rings for dry gloves will fit all brands of gloves?
@AndytheNorthernDiver
@AndytheNorthernDiver 3 года назад
Hi Marian, this is all down to personal preference and which manufacturer you go with. That is also depending on budget and how close each manufacturer is to you. Maintain KUBI dry gloves they’re nice, neat and compact. Where as Northerndiver’s have a much easier open close on off fitting but are bulkier. Neoprene is warmer and more buoyant, tri lam is more flexible and lighter. If you can try before you buy them I would.

Hello Andy, Can you advise me on wetsuit as I am about to buy one. I am very new to the sea (came from land locked country). I have bought paddle Board and wish to go to Sea All year around with paddle board. I am not diver so not expecting to go under water however occasionally I will be swimming while paddle boarding. Paddle Board is priority at this time. Cold make me sick so I prefer to have warm gear. I thought of buying Hooded Wet Suit but split between 5MM or 7 MM, price is only £30 different at Amazon. Will 7MM be too thick to move around and paddle board? 5MM seems good but would that be not good enough to protect me from cold? Your advise is highly appreciated.
@AndytheNorthernDiver
@AndytheNorthernDiver 3 года назад
The added cost of a branded wetsuit is largely down to the way it has been cut and the technology of the fabric. Cheaper tend to be basic and less beutiful. The thickness has to be personal choice, 7mm will be warm 3mm will be easier to move in. But wetsuits are designed to get wet so I would imagine neither will do much if you're dry throughout your paddle. What do others wear where you plan to paddle, maybe they will have more of an idea than I will. Thanks for watching mate good luck.

@@AndytheNorthernDiver Appreciated your prompt reply. As I am new to paddle board, I will be falling in water often therefore will be wet. I think 5MM will do the job. 7MM seems scuba thing. Any recommendation for brand? The one I am looking is Osprey or Cressi. Any preference?

Why do you ask a scuba diver about wet suits if you need a wet suit for "above the surface water sports"? Check out wet suits for surfing. This should be much better for your needs. Also check water temperature and wet suit thickness for surfers.

@@AndytheNorthernDiver 4.4 Celsius ... in all fairness that really may be hot for you. Its absolutely drysuit cold for me lol. You should make a video or 4 concerning working out your trim in a drysuit ... . There is not a single one on youtube. Go and see. Another good drysuit vid there are none of ... there are no kick vids. And we know that too is important. There are a couple of vids on drysuit buoyancy but none that are particularly helpful. I have about 20 dives in my dx7 but my trim im having probs with starting at about 40 or 45 ft. To that depth i do fairly well then it goes to shit. Just a thought or 2 from a non paying student of yours !
