Beginning in Ferrycarrig in Co. Wexford, travel writer Pól Ó'Conghaile traces a route that’s full of stories and spans over ten thousand years of Ireland’s history.
This is an inland walk in Wexford where Pól will encounter reconstructions of pre-christian Ireland, walking through real relics of Norman history from the 12th century and encountering the famous 1798 revolution sites.
The route is about 15km so it’s quite long and also hilly. At the start of the route Pól takes a slight detour to the Wexford Heritage Park to meet archaeologist Dr Denis Shine, of the Irish Archaeological Field School for a quick lesson on the local history and what he can expect to encounter. The paths and trails here loop you through the entire evolution of Irish civilisation.
Leaving the Heritage park and Ferrycarrig behind Pól follows the historic Three Rocks Trail, and here the walk starts in earnest. A quick diversion takes Pól into St Alphonsus Church in Barntown, the quintessential village church.
Pól then heads further up towards the early Irish and Viking settlements, Norman towers and now gets to 1798, as the three rocks trail takes in two important 1798 sites.
