Live in concert in the WGBH Fraser Performance Studio, violinist Daniel Stepner and violist Anne Black get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform a work by Mozart on instruments that the composer himself owned and played. From Classical New England's "Mozart Comes to America" special, produced in conjunction with the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation (owner of the instruments) and the Boston Early Music Festival, Stepner and Black play the Finale of the Duo in G, K. 423, by Mozart.

According to a few things I've read, Mozart liked to play his viola more than his violin (the piano was his favorite, of course). That's so cool! I feel even more proud to be a viola player now. :)

During the late renisance and baroque period a violin finger board waz shorter than today,s because higher notes waz nat included in music as much. Tuning to a higher octave waz the method used to acheve higher notes

Okay, nice...but the interviewer and the camera person (and the producer?) almost totally ignored the viola in this DUO. Mozart actually preferred playing the viola; all of his viola parts, especially in the two Duos, and the Sinfonia Concertante, were written for his own use. So, what of it? And why is Ms Beck using a hideous modern shoulder rest on an 18th century, unmodernized viola?
@martinh1277
@martinh1277 5 лет назад
I have heared, these duetts were written for Haydn, who was ill at that time and couldn' write his duetts to finish. The number 2, two duets, show that Mozart didn't want to publish the notes. Smaller pieces were collected up to the number 12 or 6.
@preachermermaid3980

dont be that purist about the shoulder rest hahahahaha fuck off
@preachermermaid3980
@preachermermaid3980 3 года назад
@pretty boy I understand you, but the shoulder rest doesn't make any difference in the sound, and the most important thing, it's obviously more difficult to play without it, specially that kind of repertory. That's why sometimes we prefer to use it (in a concert) because it prevents a lot of problems. Are you that pretty?
@AlexanderWinkler
@AlexanderWinkler 3 года назад
@@preachermermaid3980 im sorry but it is not that hard to play without, and that is why most people play with shoulder rest - because it is easier.

You make a good point. Content producers (like WGBH) do their best to capture the best possible (unadulterated) sound and picture, but there's no control over the end user listening and viewing environment. It's also an interesting point that what one person sees and hears is different than another...
@WGBHMusic
@WGBHMusic 11 лет назад
A little confused by your comment, however: Gut strings were what Mozart would have used - and the sound you're hearing is what the instrument sounds like in a "normal" environment like a concert hall. Otherwise, it's like putting up a sethoscope to an exhaust pipe to determine how an engine sounds.

Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to get a completely accurate sound of something in a recording. Everything in the signal chain affects the color, volume, etc. of the sound. The sound engineers (especially in classical) do their best to make up for the inaccuracies that recording creates, but even if they were perfect, the D/A converters and speakers on the listener's side would be a problem. I'm not saying this to be a jerk: I also wonder about the "true" sound of things.

@MrAsc0001
@MrAsc0001 9 лет назад
The violin would not have it's original strings and I doubt that the sound post and bridge would have last this long. Also, baroque violins like Mozart's were converted in the classical era to suit the new standard of violin design. Whether this violin was converted in that era is a different story.

So, you are “aware what type of strings Mozart used”. Really? Given the choice of strings types available to him, I don’t see how you can make such a claim. Of course gut was the basic working material, but by the late 18th century, there were all sorts of plain, wound & half-overspun strings in a variety of materials (including silk or silver). Obviously the Mozarteum Foundation instruments are gut-strung. I would hardly expect them to use scoubidous.

need DNA to clone. and even if you picked up mozarts bones you might not get mozarts. lots of things effect baby's in there mother like the age of the egg so forth. so an older mother is more likely to give a child with asperger. then then younger mother so forth. also the way he grew up as well might factor in. as well there have been a lot of twin studies done on the subject of nurture or nature.

Acoustic instruments never benefit from just sitting, year after year, never being played. Wood is a living material. Vibration from playing is good for the instrument & wood. For instance, I've been taught that an acoustic guitar - when you're not playing it - should be put on a stand next to your own stereo speakers, at home, to let the wood vibrate with the music you play on the stereo. At reasonable volume, of course.
