Hearing that Night Beat theme makes me cry... Life was so good back then as a kid... My parents and loved ones were all alive and me and all of my cousins were tight. Life was lovely in Chicago for me back then. I wish I could turn back the hands of time like Tyrone Davis when life was simple and happy.

I remember watching this on Saturday night at about 1AM after we drove back from the Chicago harness racetracks. It's was the only time I was allowed to stay up that late. It brings back good memories of my childhood in the Aurora area.

The news anchor reminds me so much of Adam West he could be his brother. Lol 22:04 - it's funny they showed a sneak preview of that Barbra Streisand album, as the single from it, "Woman in Love" was #1 on the billboard charts the day I was born.

I think Jane Byrne was a great mayor - she got where she was by working her way up, not by marrying a President. She was a GOOD Democrat.

Noticed that in the broadcast during the weather report it said "1 AM temperatures". So I'm guessing Night Beat on this particular night must've aired then around 1am (probably took a little extra time to write down and then type in the information on our screen for the temperature readings) or so and the late movie was on at 1:30am. Another great find.

It would air whenever programming dictated, sometimes a movie had a longer run time or the Cubs or Sox played on the West Coast.

Guess I was a weird kid; Len O'Connor fascinated me. I regularly imitated his close "...and I..am Len O'Connor" which drove my family crazy. One Sunday, I went to church with my aunt in Hyde Park. Just before Mass began, my aunt gently nudged me with her elbow and whispered, "look who's here; it's your buddy, Len O'Connor." Sure enough, seated at the end of the pew just across the aisle, was the man himself. I think I stared at him throughout the Mass. At one point, he caught me gawking and gave me a friendly nod. It made my Sunday.

Notice the pace of this news show. The anchor speaks calmly and clearly. There is no rapid editing or big graphics that assault the senses. This exemplifies what is meant when people from that era say life was simpler. The world has always been a complicated place and so it was in 1980. But the way regular people lived was indeed simpler. It was quieter and less chaotic. People weren’t nickel and dimed to death by rampant greed. They weren’t consumed by social media or enslaved by smart phones. They could watch free tv and get all the variety needed from 3 networks and a couple of local channels. I invite others reading this to comment on why you think life was better in 1980 than today.
