Here's a complete broadcast of a home-run derby contest between the Cubs' Dave Kingman and the Philadelphia Phillies' Mike Schmidt as carried over the Cubs' longtime TV outlet, WGN Channel 9, and emanating from Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, PA. The announcers are Jack Brickhouse and Lou Boudreau.
Includes:
Opening, with sponsor billboard for United Airlines, Pepsi-Cola, and True Value Hardware Stores
Jack lays out Schmidt's and Kingman's stats so far this year, then goes to Lou who interviews Kingman with Cubs manager Joe Amalfitano, and Schmidt with Phillies bench coach Bobby Wine, on the field; both will be pitching to their respective sluggers
Commercials for:
United Airlines (with jingle sung to tune of "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines"; father and son fly a toy plane, then Dad goes to cockpit as captain to fly in real life)
United Airlines (with Dave Kingman)
Mountain Dew soft drink
Jacobsen snow throwers
As the contest is about to start, Lou mentions the rules for each slugger (during which the Phillie Phanatic sneaks up on Kingman), then calls the play-by-play as "Kong" steps up for his turn, followed by Mike, in the equivalent of the 1st inning, followed by back and forth in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings (during which Lou speaks with Dave), then the 6th before the next break
Commericials for:
United Airlines (repeat of first and second ads)
Quick Set Extra Security Deadlock - available at True Value Hardware Stores (ending voiceover by Pat Summerall)
Mountain Dew
Play resumes between the two sluggers in the (equivalent) 7th inning (whereby Kingman speaks to Lou again as Schmidt is at bat), then the 8th (in which Lou interviews Mike) and 9th, after which the contest is finally over
Commercials for:
2nd repeat of United Airlines ads
True Value Hardware Stores - Master Mechanic Hand Tools (with Pat Summerall)
Mountain Dew
Ending sponsor billboard for United Airlines, Pepsi-Cola and True Value Hardware Stores (voiceover by Jack Brickhouse, who then lays out crew . . . )
Produced by Arne Harris
Directed by Steve Silverman

Every time she yelled out "PEANUTS" it sounded like she was saying 'PENIS' Oh man my buddies or my cousins and i would CRACK UP AT HER. We used to bring coolers in with Hoagies and Sodas. So much fun! Was this contest conceived after the Phils/Cubs 23-22 game? I also think Schmidtty had a 4HR game at wrigley field too.

As a huge Phillies (and Mike Schmidt) fan, I can't believe I never saw this before (or even knew it existed). Maybe that's because it was only broadcast on WGN in Chicago - the announcers are clearly biased in favor of Kingman, and disappointed in his performance in losing to "Smit" (as the announcer kept mispronouncing his name). A rare and interesting baseball "artifact" - thanks for sharing it!

Mike Schmidt is the greatest 3rd Basemen to ever play the game. I am 65 years old and I watched Mike's whole career with the Phillies. The day he said he was retired he was crying and so was I. There's nobody these days that does what he does with his swing at bat. Mike didn't swing as hard as he could. I remember Mike saying to use the energy from the power in the pitchers fast ball. The pitch is coming over the plate in the upper 90s. Just swing so that the fat part of the bat hits that ball. The energy from the 95+ fast ball. Will send the ball.

Were you at that crazy 23-22 game against the Phillies? That game was insane. The first Phillies game that I attended was in '69 at Connie Mack Stadium as a nine year old kid. The Phils lost in a 19-17 slugfest to the Reds. Dick Allen of the Phils hit a frozen rope off the top of the Ballantine scoreboard in right-center in the first inning and later in the game hit a mammoth HR which cleared the left field roof. That guy deserves to be in the HOF, IMO.

That's Lou Boudreau. In case you don't know, he's in the Hall of Fame. You can make fun of his diction, but you can only wish you were half the ball player he was. In 1948, Boudreau won AL MVP by hitting .348 18 HR 106 RBI 98 Walks and only 9 strikeouts. That's right... NINE SO! He led the Indians to the 1948 World Series title. And oh by the way, he was also the manager of the Indians at the same time he was playing shortstop. Yes, Boudreau was player-manager for 9 seasons with Cleveland from 1942-1950. He was player-manager from the ages of 24 to 32. Who cares if he pronounced his name funny? Why don't you focus on the greatness of these players instead of being so nitpicky & negative.

Lou Boudreau was a HOF player and player/manager for the Indians . He even managed them the 1948 WS title! He managed several teams, including the Cubs. He became the WGN Radio color man with Vince Lloyd in the 60s. Not sure why he was doing the play-by-play for this when Jack Brickhouse, the WGN TV p-b-p guys was there. Always thought Boudreau was dry but extremely knowledgeable. His excitement on that first HR was as excited as I ever heard him get, lol!

Oh, wow! I was there that night as a nineteen year old and sitting in the outfield section where most of the HR's landed. In those days the Phillies would have nights dedicated to a town in the Delaware Valley and for this game it was dedicated to my hometown of Pennsville, NJ. I had forgotten this HR contest took place during it until I saw our (then) massive high school marching band being shown before the first commercial break. This is wild....thanks!

@hondaphan4172
@hondaphan4172 3 месяца назад
@@humanbeing2420 Yeah, it was before the game. I remember the one HR Schmidt hit during the contest which smacked off the facing of the upper deck because it was directly over our group seating section. I was sitting too deep into the section to actually see it hit the concrete facing but I certainly heard it. I rarely ever sat in those outfield sections for games but I did that night to be part of our group. The '79 season was a weird and disappointing season for the Phillies as it marked the arrival of Pete Rose and all of the excitement and hope that his grit and experience would finally put the Phils over the top. The season started great and it hit it's peak ironically against these same Cubs when they beat the Cubbies at Wrigley in that crazy 23-22 slugfest. That win gave them an impressive 24-10 record and it appeared they were gonna run away with the division title. I seem to remember injuries took their toll and by season's end they finished a very disappointing fourth in the NL East. The Pirates won the division and the World Series.
@hondaphan4172
@hondaphan4172 3 месяца назад
I should add that the Phillies went on to FINALLY win a World Series title the following year ('80) when they beat the Royals in six games. Their five game NLCS series against the Astros was legendary as every game went extra innings, one game even featured a triple play, and the Phils somehow prevailed at Houston in Game 5 in a game which had everyone pulling their hair out as the game kept swinging back and forth. In '81 I was at a doubleheader at the Vet against the Mets. Kingman was on the Mets at that time and he hit a moonshot pretty far into the upper deck off of Tug McGraw. Luckily for the Phils it was just barely foul as it just missed hitting the left field foul pole. If it had stayed fair it would've rivaled Willie Stargell's mammoth blast which was marked on the concrete in the upper deck in right field. I attended quite a few games at the Vet but I had never seen anyone hit a ball so far into the upper deck as Kingman did that day. On the following pitch he hit a mile-high pop-up in the infield.

The hardest hit ball, in terms of 'exit speed' that went for a home run that I ever saw was when Kingman ripped one over the left field stands in '76 when he played for the Mets vs. the Phils at Veterans Stadium.

It was before a Phils Cubs game on (Saturday Evening/Night) Sept 15th in Phila. Most likely the ideal for a contest between Kingman / Schmidt was conceived after the Phils/Cubs game that same year in May where the Phils beat the cubs 23/22 AND Kingman and schmidt had 3Hr/2Hr in that game Kingman had 6RBI and Schmidt4.

Yes, since the real shootout happened at Wrigley in May of that year. My guess is this was the brainchild of the Phils front office. At that time they came up with a lot of Fun pregame acts for the fans to watch.

Ah yes, 1960. The year where Boudreau - then announcing the Cubs' games for WGN radio - and manager Charlie Grimm traded places (and jobs), in one of the wackiest baseball trades in history. So six degrees of Lou Boudreau.😉

@wmbrown6
@wmbrown6 3 месяца назад
Anyone remember the 1960 season where Boudreau - then announcing for WGN Radio - was traded by the Cubs in exchange for their manager Charlie Grimm? The two traded places that season, Boudreau finishing the season as manager with a 60-94 record, Grimm failing to light the 720 AM audience with his particular, ahem, style. This preceded the institution of their infamous "College of Coaches."

I.I.N.M., Kingman never had a .300 season, in spite of his long career. Also, if "The Baseball Hall of Shame" is to be believed, he is or was something of a jerk behind the scenes. (He once threw WMAQ Channel 5 producer Sandra Weir off his yacht into the Chicago River.)

@@Rockhound6165. Schmidt had a guy Greg "the bull" Luzinsky hitting behind him for a big part of his career. Kingman played on a lot of crappy Mets teams where he was the only offense. He had to swing at bad pitches as that's all he got to see. Despite this, Kingman struck out only twice over 150 times in a season. That's nothing compared to modern players, yet thats all the keyboard warriors seem to harp about.
