If you have read the novel, he also loves her in a romantic way as well lol. My guy literally pulled up to Pleidaes Watchtower, one of the deadliest places in the world and a place even Reinhard couldn't conquer, just to save Rem. He's even mentioned many times in the novel how he loves both of them.
So this isnt exactly right. His feelings for her develop over this entire arc. At the beginning, he sees her nothing more than as just a friend. Then after his fight with Emilia, Subaru and Rem become much closer. Every loop, Subaru becomes closer and more attached to Rem. Which is why he asked her to run away with him. And Subaru didn’t feel anything towards her when she initially confessed her feelings. At this point in the story, Subaru does like Rem. And this point is a bit back and forth, while Subaru is wanting to have Rem as a wife. Emilia is not as comfortable with that. Tappei himself has also stated he doesn’t like harem stories. However it doesnt change does like both of them. Even at this point, he still refers to Rem as the number 2 in his heart. It isnt until he loses her that Subaru really starts “loving” Rem. And even that is debatable on whether its comparable to his feelings for Emilia. When you consider that he gets much closer to Emilia in arc4, and they spend near 6 times the amount of time he spent with Rem. I think its safe to say he loves Emilia romantically considerably more but still has a place in his heart for Rem. To avoid anything after the anime, this is explored more later on. But from what I remember, Subaru does not ever refer to Rem with love later on in the story. Someone correct me if Im wrong, while he does care deeply for her later on, its not even anywhere near comparable to how they were with each other at THIS POINT. Obviously, there is an important narrative reason for this. But from Subarus perspective, this is never plainly stated how he feels. And this is most likely done due to Subaru HIMSELF not knowing how he feels. again, i know the reason why he is conflicted but its good we dont mention any explicit spoilers
I don't know the full lore for this series but I'm pretty sure telling the White Whale his secret would not have hurt the it in any way. To me it seems like the witch is punishing him any time he tries to tell anyone his secret, either by hurting him or the one he's speaking to if they're someone he cares about. If he successfully told the whale his secret he'd probably just die himself, resetting everything once again.
The main reason, the anime trying to be autoconclusive each season. The light novel has Subaru confessing his love for Rem after defeating the whale but they cutted it so Subaru doesn't have to tell Emilia about her until next season and this one doesn't end in a cliff hanger. Thats also why they left out Al's backstory and Felt's true identity; and in the second season mentions of Shaula and Theresia's divine protection
the anime skips a scene after defeating the whale. Rem pretends to be dying and Subaru worries a lot about her. Rem tells him that he loves Subaru and asks if he loves her, Subaru crying tells her that he loves her enough, that he would even die for her. Rem gets up, stopping pretending to be dying, and hugs Subaru, thanking him but saying that he shouldn't die for her. Subaru angry at the hug she returned but continues crying, Subaru tells her that it's not her joke, that he would die as many times as necessary for her. Then comes the corresponding scene from the anime.
People think rem is better and Emilia dont deserve her spot is really unfair. This season was just a prologue of re zero. Author just spotlighted rem but not Emilia.
That's partially true, but even in the later arcs after the anime where Emilia has more time to shine, I still don't think the author put enough effort into developing Emilia or giving her serious long-term struggles to overcome. She isn't a bad character, but I wish they did more with her since she's supposed to be the second most important character after Subaru. I want to be more invested in Emilia than I am.
Its not Totally Emilia's Fault for how she acts but we will get to that in the Next season. Also there is the Second Ova that is out which gives an actual reason. There is 2 reason why she is this way.
In the novels, Subaru admits to Rem that he has developed feelings for her (ofc he’s still in love with Emilia too). Rem says she’s willing to be his 2nd wife. Subaru x Rem and Subaru x Emilia are both kind of unhealthy attachments tbh. Both Subaru and Rem don’t have enough self-worth or self-esteem. Rem is to Subaru what Subaru is to Emilia
Nah he also loves Rem too, in the Light Novel, they talk about how Rem can be his second wife, but he needs to talk to Emilia about it and the conversation ends there.
Ugh... does anyone else feel like Farrah would absolutely tell people around her that they shouldn't be in relationships she doesn't approve of? Farrah, you're going to hate this show by the end of season two because you act like the characters and the story aren't doing what you think is best. Either accept the story or quit now to avoid having your ships trampled upon.
While this isnt a harem anime, im starting to get irritated at actual harem one's because they rarely ever just say fuck it and have everyone be happy. Like the most romantic shit ever will happen with one person that far outplays everything else, and when it comes time to decide the answer to that person could easily be "Lol, no" Sends me to the moon.
