Zamami Whale Watching Association was established in 1991 on Zamami Island, located approximately 40 km west of Okinawa. In winter, humpback whales come from the Northern Ocean to breed, give birth, and raise their babies in the sea surrounding this island.
沖縄の西方約40㎞に位置する座間味島では、1991年に座間味村ホエールウォッチング協会が設立されました。この島の周囲の海には冬になるとザトウクジラが繁殖と出産そして子育てのために北洋からやってきます。
The association has made arrangements for whale watching ships to stay at least 100 meters away from whales to avoid stressing them. However, on this day, the whales approached ships those were stopped at sea. They were female humpback whale and multiple male humpback whales chasing the female. I was really lucky to see the humpback whale's courtship behavior right in front of my eyes.
協会では、クジラにストレスを与えないためにホエールウォッチングボートはクジラから100m以上離れるように取り決めをしています。ところがこの日は海上で停止していたボートにクジラ達のほうが近付いてきました。メスのザトウクジラとメスを追いかけている複数のオスのザトウクジラでした。私は目の前でザトウクジラの求愛行動を見ることができて本当にラッキーでした。
On this day, the captain's wife was on board the whale watching ship. She loves whales, and she was excited because the whales came so close to the ship. I also enjoyed it because she explained the courtship behavior of humpback whales in an easy-to-understand manner next to me.
この日、ホエールウォッチングボートには船長の奥さんが乗船していました。彼女はクジラが大好きで、あまりにもクジラがボートに近付いてきたので興奮していましたが、ザトウクジラの求愛行動をわかりやすく私の隣で解説してくれたので私も楽しかったです。
The highlight was when a humpback whale stood on its head in the water right next to the ship and slowly pulled its tail fin out of the water to stir it. I was surprised because it was so close that I could reach out and touch its large tail. The sea water was very transparent, so we were really lucky to be able to see the whale underwater from right above the ship's gunwale. The whale then passed under the ship to the other side, surfaced and blew. Depending on the angle we looked at it, it turned into a rainbow-colored blow.
圧巻だったのは、ザトウクジラが船のすぐ横の水中で逆立ちしたまま、ゆっくりと尾びれを海水面から出してかき混ぜるような行動をした時でした。手を伸ばせば大きな尾びれに触れるくらい近かったので、ビックリです。海水の透明度も高かったので、船べりでは真上から海中のクジラの姿もしっかりと見ることができて実にラッキーでした。そのクジラは、その後、船の下をくぐって反対側に行き、浮上して息継ぎのブローをしたのですが、見る角度によっては虹色のレイボウブローになりました。
