What‘s new with Versatile Video Coding - Video Compression with Optimized Implementations

Versatile Video Coding (VVC or H.266) is the most recent international standard for today’s and tomorrow’s video compression challenges and media needs.
VVC targets a 50% bit-rate reduction beyond its predecessor, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. Fraunhofer HHI expert Benjamin Bross talks about subjectively optimized and fast VVC encoding with significant bit-rate reductions over HEVC for content ranging from standard High Definition (HD) to High Dynamic Range Ultra-HD content. Additionally, Fraunhofer HHI expert Adam Wieckowski presents the current version of its live software decoder for the new VVC standard.

Darüber hinaus stellt der Fraunhofer HHI-Experte Adam Wieckowski die aktuelle Version seines Live-Software-Decoders für den neuen VVC-Standard vor.

MPC-BE just implemented support for it and I'll be trying it out for my own videos! Only bad thing is that the release version of ffmpeg still hasn't implemented VVC encoding. I believe we will see a lot more people using it once that happens.

How does VVC compare to AV1, MPEG 5, and others like EVC? All pretty interesting and I hope it can be seen soon

Sure it can, 3GPP evaluated exactly these codecs for different 5G video scenarios together with the proponents of these codecs: www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/archive/26_series/26.955/26955-200.zip For Scenario 1 (Full HD) bit-rate savings over HEVC are: VVC - 36% SDR / 40% HDR EVC - 18% SDR / 21% HDR AV1 - 19% SDR / 15% HDR For Scenario 2 (4K-TV) bit-rate savings over HEVC are: VVC - 37% SDR / 38% HDR EVC - 20% SDR / 23% HDR AV1 - 18% SDR / 17% HDR

I shifted from h.264 to h.265 just because the max write speed of my ROM was limited to 125mbps bitrate, after converting the h.265 to h.264 I now get the almost equivalent quality of 250mbps h.264. Now if h.266 comes then I will get 500mbps of equivalent h.264 quality by converting 125mbps h.266 to h.264!!!! LOL, by the time h.266 come in commercial cameras I would have been moved to a ROM with write speed of 2gbps

How much compression is enough 🤔 I am replacing all my AVC programs with HEVC and been quite impressed. I just wonder how much more CPU encoding time needed for VVC

We’ve been working hard on getting the encoding times down with VVC. Check out our progress on the VVenC project. Current bandwidth is not great for 4K streaming and as you know High Resolution is the future of video streaming and therefore we need a compression technique that will efficient for such resolutions... That's why we need this technology... Talking about CPU usage Don't you think device that is capable of 4K streaming must have great processing power

the question though is when will it come out? I mean with video players like MPC and encoding programs like Handbrake supporting it. It's been years and still nothing.

The codec is available globally and the Indian MX Player was actually the first OTT to deploy H.266 (press release from June 16th)! Upper arm of the statue pixelizing drastically. Codec needs to be fixed, yet low quality it performs, not equal.

it was the same for both, and it's not pixelation. Those are encoding blocks.

The artifacts mostly come from RU-vid transcoding. Perks of showing video comparisons on RU-vid during corona. Hopefully we’ll be able to present the quality improvements without transcoding soon.
