Federal Student Aid

The FAFSA® experience is changing, so make sure you’re in the know.
Some of the biggest changes to the online FAFSA form for 2024-25 are the ability to access the status of your FAFSA form in your StudentAid.gov account and the ability to have your FAFSA information sent to up to 20 colleges, career schools, or trade schools.
There’s also a new term-contributor-being introduced on the 2024-25 FAFSA form. We'll go into more detail on what that means in our “Who is a Contributor on the 2024-25 FAFSA® Form” video (available later in September). A contributor is anyone required to provide a signature on a student’s FAFSA form as well as consent and approval to have their federal tax information transferred directly into the FAFSA form. Contributors may include the student, their spouse, a biological or adoptive parent, or a stepparent. Each contributor must have their own StudentAid.gov account to access the online FAFSA form.
The 2024-25 FAFSA form is available for students attending college between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. When you submit your completed FAFSA form, you’ll get an email confirming that we received your form with preliminary information related to your eligibility for federal student aid. We’ll provide your FAFSA eligibility information to your school(s) and state in the first half of March. More information: StudentAid.gov...
Pro tip: We strongly recommend that students start and complete their section of the 2024-25 FAFSA form first to save time and prevent errors. For more tips on completing the form head to StudentAid.gov...

Absolutely horrid that multiple siblings in college will no longer be considered in giving out aid. Of COURSE my family has a high income bc there’s SEVEN of us and three in college! This country is a disaster, shame on the DOE

I totally agree! When you have more than one child in college, you have less money for each of them. Thus, the importance of federal assistance. The democratic belief in educating tomorrow’s leaders is going out the window if families cannot afford to educate tomorrow’s leaders. Very disappointing and counterintuitive new rule!!

In regards to having multiple children (or parents) in college, you should definitely request a Professional Judgement from your school's Financial Aid Office to have the cost of the other students' college costs taken into account on your FAFSA. It's not the exact same as reporting the number in college on the FAFSA but what they do is actually way more accurate and helpful because they can take those costs out of the Adjusted Gross Income reported on the FAFSA. And it's the exact costs, not just an estimate like it was when you reported the number in college previously. So especially if any of you are attending a higher cost institution, this can be super helpful and way more accurately reflect your family's ability to pay. Seriously just ask your school about a Professional Judgement! You'll have to provide proof that those other costs exist obviously, just the other students' student accounts but it sounds like it would be so worth it for your family.

Don't blame the DOE (actually, you mean ED, since DOE means Department of Energy.) ED is only following the Consolidated Appropriations Act (2021), passed by Congress on December 21, 2020 and signed into law on December 27, 2020. You can, however blame ED for the lateness and the missteps in starting up. Still, this overhaul is a massive project.

. @ericayoung8891 Hello, Erica, Since you are over the age of 24, you would (more than likely) be considered an "independent" student for FAFSA purposes. Your parents would not be considered contributors for the FAFSA, and would not have to provide any information. The only exception would be if your parents can claim you as a dependent on their taxes, based on IRS regulation. This is what they meant by the contributors will be determined by your dependency status. Federal aid is tied to federal regulation. It is written into law because it comes from tax payer dollars. They have to speak in broad strokes. So, not every person listed in the video as a "contributor" will be one for every student. Each family situation is unique. The dependency questions help students identify who would be considered a "contributor" based on the answers to those questions. Keep in mind that the famous financial aid answer is "it depends". The truth is, it really does depend. The application will ask those questions that guide you to which scenario best applies for you. Hang in there, all! Change is difficult. We are all in this together.

Let’s make it even harder for students to fill out this archaic form! Now their parents or spouses need a whole account to do nothing to truly contribute! This is absolutely going to be a problem for students who have an absent parent. One crappy parent? No aid that YOU ARE ENTITLED TO…. And the models have no eyes. Which is horrifying. Thanks I hate it.
@lisakay9634
@lisakay9634 11 месяцев назад
The contributer accounts are not to help the student. They are to gather information and track the contributers. Colleges require FAFSA from all students, even those who aren't elligible for government aid. This is how the governent collects info on an entire generation and now their parents and extended familes. It has nothing to do with academics and everything to do with agendas.
@courtneystensaas3074
@courtneystensaas3074 11 месяцев назад
It's not as complicated as it sounds even. I agree that for students with completely absent parent this is going to suck. Likely those students have cause to request a Dependency Override though. However, it is only parent(s)/ parent & stepparent that are completing the FAFSA and file federal taxes as Married-Filing Separately that both parent contributors will need to have the FSA log in info set up. Otherwise it's the same as it already was. At least one parent will need to have a log in

@Quirkyhndl
@Quirkyhndl 9 месяцев назад
Where did they increase restrictions on who could apply? All this is doing is looking at all immediate family members to see if they're making enough money that they could reasonably expected to contribute. That's how it should be. Federal aid is for those who need it, not extra breaks for the wealthy.
@apathysatragedy3114
@apathysatragedy3114 9 месяцев назад
@@Quirkyhndl As many commenters have said, these changes make it very difficult for students with absent parents (who are often NOT from wealthy demographics) to file the FAFSA. Often, the homeless/independent requirements exclude many students whose parents don't really contribute to them financially, so even if the students are not receiving aid or support from their parent(s), they have to include them on the form. This was a problem before as well, but now it's compounded by the fact that the student needs more direct involvement from their "contributors" than they did in the past. This will almost certainly have a more negative impact on low-income families than wealthy ones.

In situations of abuse, neglect, or abandonment from a parent/parents, you should request that your Financial Aid office do a Dependency Override. You answer a few questions/write a letter about your circumstances to submit to the office and if/when approved, you're an Independent Student who is not required to have parental information on the FAFSA regardless of your age.
@jmkbrillig40
@jmkbrillig40 9 месяцев назад
As the parent, I already have had to download my tax returns from the IRS into the form, and so have my students. They are my dependents and cannot fill it out as independent. That is not new. What is new is being penalized for having more than one student in college at the same time. This isn't "easier" it's less helpful.
@courtneystensaas3074
@courtneystensaas3074 8 месяцев назад
If you have more than one student going to college in your family, you can request a Professional Judgement to have the tuition and fees due for that other student taken into account on the FAFSA. It's not the exact same and having a place to report number in college but it's how the Department of Education is working around the requirements set forth by the FAFSA Simplification Act from Congress. You have always been able to do a Professional Judgement to account for a parent in college for example, even though the FAFSA says not to include the parents in the number in college.

Brookings estimated that almost 900,000 students with one sibling in college will maintain eligibility for financial aid under the new formula. Those students stand to lose almost $3,000 each in institutional grant aid, totaling $2.5 billion. Another 157,000 will lose all eligibility, which could have provided up to $7,900 each in aid, totaling $1.2 billion, Brookings said. “Students with siblings in college will ... stand to lose thousands of dollars in financial aid,” Brooking said. Students already in college “will be shocked by the large increase in their net price.”
@guidedstars
@guidedstars 8 месяцев назад
So are the sibling privileges (getting more aid for having a sibling) be taken away? Or will the total aid in general be taken away if you have a sibling? Like before, if you had a sibling, you would get more financial aid, so now if students have a sibling would they have less financial aid or the same amount of financial aid as a student with no siblings?

If you are a family with more than one person attending college, then you can request a Professional Judgement from your school's Financial Aid Office to have the amount paid on the other student's schooling taken into account (taken out of the Adjusted Gross Income reported on the FAFSA). You'll need to provide the other student's name, school they're attending, relationship to the student, and their student account at the other school (so they know what amount to account for)

@chrisjadlos1982 8 месяцев назад
No you do not have to get emancipated. Just like with the "old" FAFSA, you provide your parent's information. The formula determines your eligibility for federal aid. The big question is this - will your total financial aid from federal/state/school/other resources cover all your costs. If not, you will need to reconsider your plans. Not ideal, but can you live at home, saving you much of the cost; or can you start at a community college, again saving money. You need to talk with a financial aid person to weigh your options - do this AFTER you get financial aid offers from the schools that accept you for admission.

@@FederalStudentAid Thank you for this helpful video! Please note that the term "college counselor" is also incorrect. Not all "college counselors" are school counselors and not all school counselors are "college counselors". Please understand that the change to "school counselor" was initiated by the American School Counselors Association to better reflect the broader role that has developed as the scope of our duties has evolved. The term "guidance counselor" is too narrow and implies a narrow role in which we only provide vocational advice. Thank you for considering updating your future videos to the correct term... "school counselor"!

I'm guardian of my grand daughter and haven't received any aid or help supporting her for the time she's been with us. Not being her parent how will this effect her and should we act as her contributor or should I call the financial aid office at the school she will be attending for information since this question isn't addressed in anything that I've seen.

I am a legal guardian of a child. She marked the box saying she does not live with her parents and is in guardianship, it automatically told her she was an "independent student". I am told the schools will ask for documentation after they receive her information. Any other specifics would be addressed by the schools she has applied to.
@courtneystensaas3074
@courtneystensaas3074 8 месяцев назад
@@kimbrooks3419yes this is true. Because of the Legal Guardianship, the student is and Independent Student and no additional contributors will be required. You will likely need to submit the court documentation for the Legal Guardianship. Federal Student Aid eligibility (like for the Pell Grant and Loans) will be determined solely based on the student's income, if they have any. If it's $0, that's fine! Expect full Pell Grant eligibility! 😊
@courtneystensaas3074
@courtneystensaas3074 8 месяцев назад
If it is considered a Legal Guardianship then she will just answer that question accordingly and will be Independent. If it's not a formally recognized legal guardianship by the courts, she will want to submit her FAFSA as a Provisionally Independent Student and then ask her school's Financial Aid Office about a Dependency Override. This is the option for those students who fall into the category of technically not being able to answer "yes" to any of the questions that determine dependency status but have unusual circumstances that lead them to not be able to provide parental info for one reason or another.

Do both parents have to fill FAFSA separately even though status marries and file joint tax?
@courtneystensaas3074
@courtneystensaas3074 8 месяцев назад
No if the parents (including stepparents!) reported on the FAFSA are married and file their taxes jointly, then only one parent is required to have an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA and provide the required consent for the taxes to be pulled into the FAFSA, and sign it. Only if the married parents/stepparents file their taxes separately will they need to both become Contributors for the FAFSA as they will both need to provide the consent needed to get both of their tax information.

@@Anon0nlineif you are an orphan, you are an Independent Student who is not required to put parental information on the FAFSA for obvious reasons. Not necessary if money was properly managed and prioritized in this country as well as within the universities. All we have to do is look to world neighbors and see higher education at an affordable price is an option. I want to thank all the companies out there "scholarshipping" their workers through higher education: Walmart, McDonalds, Star Bucks, Dutch Bros as well as the others that are willingly working around college schedules to higher students such as FedEx, Amazon. I am sure there are many others. Please continue to support them with patronage as they have the right idea if we don't want to become a country with cyclic poverty and only the upper class becoming the highly educated: recipe to a revolution ...see history.
