Best decision I ever made! Almost a year and a half ago I got to meet my best friend Fauci. My mental health has never been better! I get more exercise and smile so much it hurts. If you are on the fence jump off and get one they are incredible!
So glad to hear that and that your mental health is much better! I think Dobies make great mental health therapy dogs. Am getting one for this reason, as I suffer with extremely severe pts'd'. Hopefully by March for my 50th. At least in USA you do use them for this role. Here in the UK they are still very demonised and misunderstood, unfortunately.
@@beckyshah4600 yes my boy is great for mental health. I also suffer from PTSD and he has been amazing. We have a few in our area but unfortunately still not as many as I'd like to see. A lot of people dont realize they used them a ton in WWII and as police dogs therapy dogs and so much more. They are a truly incredible breed.
@@evanmcswain6183 that sounds so nice, me and my boyfriend are thinking about getting one and actually have a chance to get a red dobie boy by christmas but because we haven't had dogs before and are novice owners it's scary and we're on the verge of if we should or shouldn't... I tried so hard to look for other easier breeds or smaller dogs but my heart is too settled on dobermans!
@@s4frina just make sure it's right for you they can be alot of work. The reward is worth it for me and hopefully you also. They definitely have lots of energy.
Evan, that's great to hear! Dobies certainly improve our lives. Most people would agree that we need them more than they need us! Fauci sounds like a great best friend to have around! :)
To be honest, the only thing holding me back from getting a Doberman is the fact that I already have two. But don’t worry I will get a third Doberman before all is said and done.
Have you struggled with dog on dog aggression at any point? If so how'd you manage it? In the future I plan to own multiple working dogs. (German shepherd, husky, possibly doberman)
@@AHHHHHH107 not really. At least not yet. My female is almost 2 and my male is only 6 months. So while my male is way more hyper, he is also literally half her size. My female is such a sweetheart. They do like to play and wrestle but she has always been patient with him even though I’m sure he test that patience at times. She loves her little brother and I don’t believe she would ever try to be aggressive towards him.
My Doberman Banelli is so loving. He is like Velcro and we are together all the time and he’s only 1. He’s so strong, smart, and loyal. I trained him to jump over very high obstacles!
Something thats holding me back is that I have never owned a dog and dont want to get a dobie as my first dog and ruin it's life, but I dont like other breeds, I would really appreiciate if you could make another updated video for keeping dobies for novice owners
May I make a suggestion? You could always try a “plugs out” test - or essentially, a real life dry-run. You know the requirements of keeping a Doberman, right? (Exercise, cost, training, vet bills, misc expenses.) If not, there’s loads of great videos on this channel! But imo the best way to see if you can manage a Doberman is to live as though you have one already! Go for an hour’s walk 2x a day. Find out how much pet insurance costs and start putting it aside in a mason jar in cash every month. Same thing for kibble, and toys. Money into the mason jar. Keep it up for a month, and then another, until you hit twelve months. If you can commit, then you’re qualified. If not, find out where you dropped the ball, and either improve, or consider a breed that fits that profile. A dog is a lifetime commitment - theirs. If you can spend a year committed to that, not only will you have the peace of mind of knowing you’ll be a good home for your dog… that mason jar money will probably be enough to purchase your puppy!
@@phantomlakdude good luck! Take it one month at a time, and if you catch yourself slipping on one thing (time, money, inclination), you can double down. I tried it myself, starting on day1 of quarantine. “You want a dobie? Okay then, act like you brought him home yesterday.” I have never bought so much winter gear in my life - cause -25C ain’t cute - but I walked that imaginary dog twice a day for an hour at a time all damn winter. I figured that if I was committed enough to walk an imaginary dog in the dead of a Canadian January, walking a real one would be an upgrade. Nearly two years into quarantine and I’ve got the best exercised imaginary dog… and my real one comes home in the spring!
What's holding me back from getting a Doberman is that I just lost my first Doberman less than 2 months ago. It was very hard to go through that experience and I don't know if I want to do that again. Could you do a video on how to deal with losing your Doberman?
I felt the EXACT same way. I did not think I could loose another best friend AND I didn’t think any other dog could possibly be as good as our first Dobie. Two years after we lost our first, I started just looking at pictures on the intranet. Then, I just “looked” to see if the breeder we used was still in business. I knew my husband felt the same as I did about another Dobe so I did not mention my internet curiosity to him. Long story short, we are into our third year with our second Dobie and it was the best decision. Our Moses is a pure joy and we have so much fun with him. Olga, our first Dobie, paved the way for us to be Dobie only owners. Glad we made the decisions that we did. I hope you will give another Dobe a good home. They deserve the best owners.
You need time to remember . When a long long long time passes, ask yourself if adopting and developing a strong attachment to a new Doberman is something you do or do not want.
Same. My first doberman's passing left me devastated. She was an absolute angel. Loyal and loving dog. She has taken such a big space in my life that i thought I'd never get another doberman or dog again. However, i just took that leap of faith to get another doberman and the family was able to move on, but not forget the wonderful angel we once had. Her memories does not make us hurt or grieve anymore. It just makes us remember the good memories we've spent with her.
We lost our oldest dog and didn’t wait long enough to get our Doberman puppy. My husband was ok with a short gap, but it wasn’t enough time in between for me, and it has affected my bonding with our puppy. I would definitely encourage giving yourself time to grieve and not rush the process. Hopefully you’ll get to the point when you feel ready for another.
Another great video, thank you! I’ve wanted a dobie for the past ten years, but circumstances were never right so I never felt comfortable bringing a dog into the equation. I decided to consider it as motivation: if I could get my own fitness, finances and spatial footprint to a place where I could provide a happy home for a dog like the Doberman… then I’d let myself adopt one. Happily, I’ll be moving into my own home this spring, and the first thing I’m doing is adopting my dog. I don’t know who’ll come home with me yet, but somewhere out there is a dobie who has no idea how good their life is about to get!
not having my own place is the only thing stopping me to be honest. early 20’s working extremely hard to move out. the reason I’m waiting is because our family dog the one i grew up with passed in this house & it just doesn’t sit right with some family members and i can understand that.
Just want to say that I love my Dobies! I've never been this in love with a dog before so I know that the Doberman is the right breed for me. If my husband were to allow it I definitely would get a third Dobie.
The biggest thing holding me back is their health. Another concern is getting a good breeder that really cares about the breed not the money. I just don't know who to believe!
We lost our 6.5 year old black female june 18 2020. She dropped dead outside our house on our last walk of the day. DROPPED DEAD! I didnt get a necropsy done as i didnt see the point. She had no health issues. After googling "sudden death in dobermans" I first heard of DCM. I am very hesitant to get another. This was my second dobbie. The first, a red female, lived to over 13.
I’m picking up my first Doberman on the 24th. She will be 7 weeks old! I found her on AKC Marketplace. And the breeder will provide her pedigree and a health guarantee
I've grown up with Dobermans my entire life and I made one dream come true by getting my first Dobermans this year. She is so sweet and scary smart and is definitely enjoying the snow! She is going to become my service dog and we are getting a couple more Dobies in the spring.
The thing that was holding me back from getting the Doberman I wanted was the price. I watched this video and it helped me put a 2nd mortgage on my house at double the interest rate for my dobbie, wish me luck guys ❤
We're on our 5th doberman. 2 were adopted so we didn't know the breeders. First 4 lived 9-12 years. We did have to go out of state for the most recent though.
My Doberman Puppy doesn't chase my Chickens, Plays with the Cats and doesn't get near my Donkey or Sheep!!! That Works for me!!! Of course the house looks like a Playground, but doable!!! Smiles 😃 Thanks for Doberman Planet,.. It's a fantastic way to understand your Dog and a lot of fun in the midst of it all.... Blessings and Shalom!!!
Hey me and my wife been watching your videos for years. We’ve probably watched every video to date. We finally got our Doberman yesterday. Your videos have thoughts a lot!! We rewatched them everyday!!
We already have an amazing Doberman who we love VERY much… for us it’s “what’s holding us back from getting a SECOND Doberman.” Haha! Love your videos! Arlo is so incredibly adorable!!!😊❤️🐾
Now only time holds me :) I'm wainting for my doberman puppy which should be with me June/July! :) Thank you for this channel, it really helps me gather information to prepare for this. It will be though (my first dog ever!) but it was my dream since childhood to have a dog. :)
@@DobermanPlanet I live in a part of the UK in which for about 5 months the temperature is 25-50 fahrenheit but it doesn't snow very much, would you consider that too cold?
Thanks! For posting my comment, John. I was really excited to hear you give me a shout out. As soon as I am done watching this, I am going to watch it again with Lauren who was our inspiration to get a Doberman to begin with!!!!! Thanks, again!!!!
Thanks for another great video! I've also thought about a doggie treadmill for burning energy during the cold months. It is going to be -20 next week and my current dog will need booties and short walks. But he's 10 and likes to sleep most of the day anyway. 😉
My Doberman Banelli is 1 and we bought an RV and moved to a nice camp ground in the mountains. He does great in the RV. I run him a lot and use my golf cart to run him out.
What's holding me back is I'm afraid of not being good enough for the breed. Like trying to give them enough activity, both physical and mental, but failing to do enough to make sure they're happy.
Nothing holding me back but time now! Had doberman on my list since 2016, and found myself finally nearly ready for em earlier this year, which is when I dove back into my research, and started seriously making a breeder short list. With my criteria in selecting a breeder to even approach, thankfully I have not come across anyone rude. I became fully ready this past September, and just been approved by my #1 choice breeder on my list. They should have the annual litter late next spring. My 1st dobe and dog as an adult, beyond excited. Thank you for making such videos! Found you earlier this year while still making my short list, and your perspective have helped with great tips to keep in mind, and further verify certain thoughts as well (including that doberman is the right choice for me, and that I am ready for the challenge).
i 100% get the worries about climate being too cold as i myself live in a very cold climate too. One thing i would suggest is getting one of those dog treadmills so when the weather is rough and not suitable for your dog they can still get all that energy out
I've been researching for a couple of months and have put a deposit on a European Doberman but literally this video if I would have watched it sooner would have helped ease my mind. Totally helpful.
Just got two boys and watching their sister that my buddy got. All are almost 9 weeks and man are they a handful, but so much fun and so cute. I guess I’m a morning person now. 😂
I bought my Doberman Judge a few months ago together with my ex, he arrived a week after we broke up. So I was dealing with working from home, arranging the sale of our house, moving in with my mother AND raising my pup. So the first few weeks he got a lot less exercise and training than I would've liked. But I'm committing to training and exercising a little extra now and he is doing so well! So don't overthink too much, just try to do your research and socialise very well. And ofcourse try your best, and love him/her as much as you can. I know Judge loved me from the moment he arrived and we have been inseparable ever since.
Breeders have been our main issue. We’re ready for our son to experience the house of growing up with a Dobie as DH and I both have had Dobies in the past. 🤞 we find the right breeder & pup!
The only thing holding me back is how bad the local breeders are. No EKG, no holter, no advanced health checking. They don't care and just ghost you when you ask. And having dealt with DCM and Bloat in my previous dobermanns I am not sure I could do the heart ache again.
I really want to get a doberman because of their loyalty towards the owner (also they are sweet af!!!) I think a doberman can help me with my depression but I'm a bit scared I wouldn't be a good owner :'>
I already have 2 dogs in an apartment, one of them is less than one year of age so now is probably not the time for a dobie. However I have already decided that the next dog I'm getting when the timing is better will be a doberman :)
If you are worried about temperament, getting along with others, "bad habits", etc.. adopt from a rescue. A foster will have a report on the dog and you'll know what to expect. In the last 25 years we've had six Dobes. All them adapted to our lifestyle and we've never needed to exercise their bad habits away. Just like in the video, what they always want is to be with us. When they are a puppy they do need lots of play and exercise but as they get older it's less so and that is another reason to adopt from a rescue. If you have two, they wear each other out :)
It's been a decade since my last doberman.. I've been wanting another and I am finally ready.. I pick my brand new puppy up on December 11.. I can't wait.. I had a black and rust for my first. This time I went with red and rust. Im very excited. What I have been wanting to ask you though.. is where did you get that doberman head statue on your fireplace. I really want one..
The only thing holding me back is money and time. I want to save up what I need to and also I have two smaller children. One currently being potty trained. I want my children to be just a little older so I know I can also give the dobbie the love and time it needs. I planned it out for September 2023. wish me luck.
I've been dying to get a Doberman forever! Always loved them as a kid without even knowing how I discovered them lol, and only learned what they were named due to googling "the scary dog from Up" 😆I watched all your videos (including the apartment one!) and found a list of breeders I want to buy from, but so far it seems they both explicitly / implicitly would not sell a puppy to an apartment dweller. The one breeder I dared apply to rejected me because of the apartment situation as well, even when I told her I am very active. Fingers crossed in one day meeting a reputable breeder who would be willing to sell me a puppy!
I just retired! Had a awsome doberman in high school! She passed of old age ! But I fish alot in the summer ! Mostly worry if I go away getting a dog sitter !! And picking up the poo !! I have a big back yard ! But I love them so much ♥️ **
NOTHING held us back John! We got Loki 7 months ago and he has been an absolute pain the butt/blessing lol. As always thank you for your love and support of the best breed in the world!
Just love your chanel ! Im preparing myself right now to get a dobbie pup and U helping me a lot! Keep doing what U re doing mayby a little bit often! Greetings from Holland!
Dog Allergies :( And I was told that allergy shots won’t fix everything or make the allergy disappear. Which really sucks. But it’s for the best because at least I know and I won’t make an accidental irresponsible decision and have to give a companion up a month or two after I get one
The only thing holding me back from getting a Dobie. Is that I have a Dobie already and is such a work (with her commands). So, when Laika becomes more mature maybe I will get another baby girl dobie.
I'm nearly ready, talked to a breeder planning a litter for middle of next year. Still have a couple of concerns I'm working through though. I have a boarder at the moment with 2 dogs and I feel like 3 dogs on my property may be too many, also we have differences in our ideas on how a dog should be kept, and inconsistencies like that can make things harder. I'm also working on being diagnosed with adhd, and I'm worried about my ability to deal with the stresses involved in the puppy stage and ensuring I can do what needs to be done even when it's hard. Finally I'm worried about other dogs (or really the owners) my boarders dog was attacked by another dog in the street a few weeks ago. Was loose on it's front lawn, sprinted across the street and straight latched on. Not my first dogfight, but reminds me that walking daily can include things like this occasionally. It's possible I may have to drive to another area to walk my dog to reduce this risk, as my neighborhood isn't the greatest in this regard.
Good luck with everything! I hope it works out for you! It's cool you're taking such care to know for sure! In my research, I've seen a lot who seem flippant about getting a dobe, let alone a dog in general. Dobes have been on my goal list since 2016, and when I was close to being ready earlier this year, I dove back into research and making a serious list of breeders. Now I'm ready, been approved by the breeder in my #1 choice, and they should have their litter around mid 2022 as well. Wishing you the best!
@@fydbac Thanks! Good luck with yours too. I've been wanting a Doberman since 1996, when I first met my cousins 2. My last dog wasn't a Doberman but had some similar traits, he was a handful, and there are a few things that I'd like to do differently this time around, and be realistic about what will be difficult so I can prepare properly. 😁
The only thing that stopped me from getting a doberman is the temperatures here. Though they may reach coldest 16 degrees celsius, the dogs we have should be able to work 10 hours a day at night and then be in a tight space in the day. In other words, doberman dogs do not have an undercoat so they get cold easily and that is the only thing stopping me from getting one Apart from that, I love your videos. Thanks for your vids
YES! please do a video villainize the horrible, mean, rude, stuck up breeders!!!!!!!!!! use names if you can legally, to shame them specifically!! you are just awesome!! i feel like you are my good friend!
All that’s holding me back is severe dog allergies. Seems I’ll have to stick to poodles until we have a cure :( but poodles are incredibly versatile, they just lack some of that ‘attack drive’, otherwise they can compete everywhere dobies can.
I'm 70. My health isn't the greatest and if something happens to me there is no one to call or ask to take care of my dobbie. NOONE. I lost my maggie(dobbie ) 2 years ago and my has never been the same. She was my life and now, the emptiness is so overwhelming.. She was not only a companion but she was the most loving creature on the planet. If I had a person I could trust if something happened to me ,I wouldn't wait another minute.
Getting a dog for intimidation is a bad idea. First off, if they naturally attack then a lot of people can be harmed just because the dog was untrained and scared. Second off, its very hard to train up a very good guard dog on your own, and trainers are a lot of work and money. Third off, think of dogs as knives. You can carry one around, you can even pull one on someone, but unless youre actually ready to attack/stab, the knife is useless and the person will almost immediately see through your bluff.
I want a second Dobie! So they can play. We lost Tiny to DCM this August, she was only 2.5 yo. Such sadness & grief!!! I found Ruby right away and she’s 4 mo now, such a big love and she wants a sister!! Will start begging husband now
just 2 hours, omg the one thing holding me back was time, but 2 hours a day is easy, i could go like 5 no problem, days off could be 24h of just doing stuuff with him. im sooo ready to get me a dobe.
Thanks Jhon for the nice video again! Your BIGGEST fans from belgium, Finn the doberman and Maja 😉❤🐾🐾 i always dream of a pack dobermans, maybe my dream wil coms true 😊😉
Currently, my whole family generally agrees we will likely get a Doberman at some point likely in the near future. We have a 2-month-old kitten in the house currently, but I'm sure we can get her acclimated to living with a dog (she hates other cats). Another problem is the lack of enough reputable breeders in my country, it's small. I've tried to convince my parents to acquire a Doberman from the United States however they say it's too expensive to bring it all the way here which is true....
I need to know what to ask the Doberman breeder. I'm all for getting a Doberman but I want to make sure I'm asking the right questions & I don't get a dog that has more problems then I do LOL.
I was 99% there a few weeks ago; but when I asked my family with whom we'd be spending the holidays if it was ok if I would bring a new puppy with me and it didn't go over well. So, since we're committed to the holidays with family especially after all the covid separation, we will wait a few months more. Ugh!
The only thing holding me back from getting a Doberman is my landlord told me I need to get a dog that is under 10lbs with my emotional support dog letter. Sadly a Doberman isn’t under 10 lbs =( So I’ll be forever heart broken. But your videos every Sunday really help me. And I thank you for creating your videos.
That is not true. an emotional support animal can be any breed, any size, age, female or male. You need to look up your rights. I have a doberman as my ESA.
@@kat_8984 yeah it’s not true at all. I even told him that and his response was “the owner is very upset with you” They don’t even understand what I’m going through in life or even try to understand why I need one.
It sounds like you need to file a complaint with HUD. Because it is illegal to deny an emotional support animal based on breed, size, age, male or female. I'm very sorry that you have to go with this.
@@kat_8984 and also for J R, if anyone has ever seen emotional support dogs accompanying their people, while some such dogs are small, some of them are LARGE, like once as I saw, a very large and very calm German Shepherd. Yes. That was an emotional support dog.
For the past 2-3 years, I have very badly wanted to get a Doberman - and I am 100% a cat guy. I have had cats for 25 years, with zero desire to get a dog. However, I feel like I would be doing the dog a disservice because it would have to be an "outside" dog. From watching all of your vids, it seems like they thrive being with the family all of the time, and that is just not something we can accommodate. Its literally the only reason I have not pulled the trigger on getting one. Maybe someday the circumstances will change, but for now, I can only dream.
The only thing holding me back is the fact that Im a student and the appartment i live in doesn’t allow pets of any kind. But i am looking for my own place and when i find one im most definately getting a dobie.
Been Watching your videos for awhile now and have been subscribed for awhile. I have finally gotten a Doberman and I am picking him up during the holidays! My only concern is DCM and also this will be Blue Doberman: I originally wanted a Black or Red; but the Opportunity came and I couldn't pass it up! So I have some concern on Doberman alopecia, I have done a little research so far about certain supplements or like vitamin A as well as certain shampoos to help. Long story Short I'm Super excited to bring Niko to my family. Currently own a Cane Corso and a Yorkshire Terrier and Minatare Poodle. If you have any advice! it would be much appreciated! I will continue to watch your videos! I wont be a stranger! Hope to hear from you!
John! Love your channel. It's been so helpful before and after getting our girl Brynn. Question?! The way Arlos ears are posted, can you let me know where to find out that system? We're definitely struggling over here! Much thanks!
Love your channel! So much good information! I have a question.. do you have any information on knuckling in dobermans? I’ve recently found out it’s a fairly common thing, however there is not a whole lot of information available on it. Not sure if it has become a common issue with this breed? Thanks!
Seeing your Christmas tree In the background, wondering if Arlo ever bothers it ? I mean like if you’re not looking he might have an ornament in his mouth . Just curious how they might handle something new in the house like that . Thanks for this channel
I'd love another Dobermann but Liv wouldn't be happy but I will get another. Not thinking about that day though because I'll feel like my right arm is missing.
I have a 15 month old male that is amazing. He is the best companion and so much fun. The breeder is planning another litter next spring and I would love a female from the same parents. Not for breeding obviously. My concern is is my boy going to be too young for me to get him a sister? Thanks for your help!
Elitist breeder behavior is by no means limited to Doberman breeders. A polite no would be a lot. I certainly don't approve of it, but I think they drive some people to "alternative" or bread breeders. Just say it like it is or set up a polite auto-reply to clarify the situation in case it gets too busy. Anyway, we forgo it because of the size. We have seen some Dobbermans (in Europe) and they were really big. Quite impressive, especially the males. We ended up going for another medium-sized breed. We will nevertheless continue to follow this channel. A lot of advice works anyway
@@lyreparadox Hi Loren, we definitely did! We were on the waiting list but when the moment was there and the breeder found out we had a little child he refused to sell us a dog. Ironically he advised us to look out for a dobermann because according to him they are much more tolerant with smaller children than German Pinschers, which I think might be true actually
I am afraid that my kids will be afraid of the dog once it gets big! My husband died a few months ago and I would love a protection dog for me and my girls for hikes, camping and being alone in my home working etc. but my kids are not used to big dogs.
