Shedinja is prolly less of a Western-style possession and more of the traditional Japanese trope where "object gains sentience/soul after some time", mostly used in yokai folklore.
Check out this proto Pokédex entry that is likely no longer canon: "A mysterious Pokémon that has a body but no soul. The halo above its head is thought to be its true body. It levitates to move."
Two things: 1. You don’t just need an empty party slot. You also need a PokéBall in your inventory. 2. A cicada’s carapace isn’t produced by a metamorphosis. It’s a byproduct of molting. Exoskeletons are rigid, so when the cicada outgrows it, it sheds it and grows a new one.
Considering the dex says “believed”/“said” instead concrete evidence of someone’s soul being taken away/dying, like how Mimikyu dex actually having evidence of many people dying. I like to believe it’s just an urban legend in the Pokémon world. Considering how creepy it is that it just appears in it’s trainers pokeball and a ghost type, I can see em making a rumor like that. Especially if Shedinja is known for wanting people to stare into its back, people might’ve taken it as a bad omen lol
Truly great Pokemon design, in my opinion: it show cases generation 3's most important battle mechanic, abilities, in a way that's both intuitive to Pokemon players AND that fundamentally alters how battles work when its out, all while being very well balanced. Then the actual design is so simple: cicada shells are creepy and do look sort of alive and sort of dead at once, and Shedinja is a fantastic version of that. It keeps the spirit of the original Pokemon games, which were based on catching bugs in your backyard as a kid: here is something you could meet in real life, and never meet in real life. Splendid video too! Shedinja is a favorite of mine. Every piece of this Pokemon from catch condition, visual design, its basis in real life biology, and its innovative ability make it so memorable.
In Go they messed it up, only available from certain events and dies in one hit. I have a Lucky one from a trade and powering it up would just be wasting resources
Shedinja is also an interesting thing in the pmd games, I've seen many users play as one in long dungeons; due to it being a ghost type and having wonder guard- its... Well in pmd rescue team and time, sky & darkness its downright broken
@@Idk_F_numbers Pokémon mystery dungeon, it's a side series where you play as a Pokémon in randomly generated Levels called Mystery dungeons Recommend playing it if ya havent, it's a great series (suggest explorers of sky if ya can find it)
The fact that you need an empty team space for it to appear also adds to the ominous-ness. It's as if the ghost wants to come to you (maybe it likes you, or feels obliged to come because it stole _your_ Pokemon's skin?), but when it sees that it can't because your team is full, it simply floats away disappointed and it's as if it never existed at all. Imagine someone discovering this whole mechanic (how Shedinja comes to be) on a blind playthrough. What would their reaction be?
I have a small theory. What if Shedninja is actually a Mimikyu? They actually share a lot of similarities. When Mimikyu can't find or make their own Pikachu Disguise, they can sometimes find the discarded shell of a Nincada, and use that as a disguise as well. The only weak spot of the disguise would be the opening Mimikyu used to get in: The Back. Both Shejinja and Mimikyu have similarities in their pokedex entrees, where if you look directly at Mimikyu's true form, or in Shejinja's back, you'll die or lose your soul. It's probably not right, but its a neat theory
Fun fact I don't think many people know of; You can actually control what Pokeball Your Shedinja will have. Just put a specific Pokeball in the first slot of Your inventory, cuz usually We have typically Pokeballs
Gen 3 was my first pokemon game. Ruby to be specific(since red is my favorite color). Nincada was my 4th pokemon I believe. I was super surprised when it evolved, I check my Pokemon and my 6th slot was occupied by a Shedinja. I was like, where did it come from? It took me a while to figure out that it came from Nincada/Ninjask. Dude was super useful and came in clutch in a lot of battles, since he can no sell a lot of trainers. He was also my dedicated False Swiper. He did not like fighting Regirock though.
I really enjoy your short form pokemon fact videos. Just the right length to not be a commitment to watch but also long enough to be really intresting! Keep it up!!
I honestly cheated Endeavor and Shadow Punch to Shedinja because I found it funny, and it surprisingly works. Turns it's biggest weakness into it's strength
can’t wait for more, you’ve become one of my favorite pokémon creators, and seeing an upload notification is always a uplifter, even if i can’t watch the video right away.
remember, cicadas spend a long time underground before they emerge. And it is stated that Nincada spends a long time before evolving. All that extra time probably stores a lot more life energy or whatever in the shell
I pictured someone sticking their face into the hole practically and then having their soul swap with it. It throws you into the shell which you don't know how to control and itself into your body. You lie either stuck for eternity or until something someone or some pokemon crushes your abandoned vessel.
And of course the one time it appears in a major role in the Anime, it's sounds like it's saying it's name with same nasaly, raspy, creepy, tone of voice as "HEEEEERRRRES JOHNNY!" From The Shining. And it also has that sharp high pitched screech chord when it fires an attack from its Halo as it flips to resemble devil horns. It just sucks that it still is so unusable in most Battles Competitive or not simply because any form of Damage it is effected by KO's it including weather, status effects, and entry hazards.
I feel like it doesn't kill the player if they look into its back because it loves you too much too hurt you and only sucks out souls as a defense mechanism.
Shedinja is such a creepy little *******. But if you're brave (or foolish) enough, you can have one on your team. Just don't lose heart when it gets hit by a super effective move.
Shedinja is my favourite pokemon, once i got Selebi on one russian site for pokemon fans that is kinda a game, but instead of trading it for anything rare or valuable i traded it for shedinja haha. Never regretted this, because the person i traded with was quite happy :D
well i think its pretty obvious. shedninja shed=molt shedninja is only just molted shell, thats how insects work. so why theres a hole in its back? well thats where ninjask came out but anyway the first part was included in the video so yeah i made this without watching the whole video 💀
This is just something i came up with but what if nincada has a commensalism or mutualistic relationship with another pokemon that dies when it evolves into ninjask and takes the shell nincada left behind
If shedninja is a Bug/Ghost does that mean Ninjask should be a bug and dark which represents the opposite where ninjask can outmanoeuvred Shedinja cuz its a ghost and knows dark type moves and I'm gonna mention that ninjask looks is based on a ninja, mayghash gamefreak
