When Emma Watkins became the Yellow Wiggle in 2012, she overcame a backlash to make the yellow skivvy her own, winning over a new generation of fans.
As Emma's star rose, behind the scenes her health was failing. Eventually she was diagnosed with endometriosis and her decision to go public brought much-needed attention to the disease.
Her health problems led her to re-evaluate other areas of her life and at the beginning of the year she separated from her husband, fellow Wiggle Lachlan Gillespie.
Emma speaks exclusively to Australian Story about the separation, its fall-out and the couple’s determination to continue working together.

Technically, there have been female Wiggles before Emma. The first was Anni, the Red Taiwanese Wiggle in 2003. Then there was Anni's replacement Vivi in 2005. And lastly, Zoe and Katty, the Blue and Purple (respectively) Latin American Wiggles from 2005-2006. Then there was the Honorary Pink Wiggle, Kylie Minogue in 2009.

I’m here from Allure’s Emma routine. She’s so bright and just lovely. I am so surprised there are people that dont like her. I mean like, what!!?? How !!???? She’s so so so lovely !! Just by watching one video of her and now I’m here, watching another dose of her. And fell in love with how positive and bright she is 💗

I don’t understand why everyone dislikes her as a wiggle. Yes, the wiggles were originally an all male group. But look at her. She’s emotionally invested into this group. She’s a role model and the children love her. The energy and the vibe she gives off is amazing. Sometimes we need change. Old things can no longer function the same and they have to be changed. The old wiggles will forever be in my heart, but wish the new ones all the best. I love the wiggles and I love that Emma is part of them now

Kaia S I also feel like the wiggles are exactly like queen because they started after the 1960s and Emma is like Adam Lambert and people think that queen is not queen with Adam and without Freddie and people think that the wiggles isn’t the wiggles without Greg,Jeff and Murray and Emma is a woman and that the wiggles is a male group just like queen and Adam is really over the top and people think that Emma is also over the top and Emma dances around like Freddie and Greg and Adam is over the top but so is Emma what people are saying so they really are alike.

I’m an original Wiggles child, but I love the fact that they added a Female Wiggle. To me, she is a real Wiggle because she brings joy to the kids and we’re living in a new generation, it’s 2018, if you miss the old Wiggles go watch their old videos, but I think it’s amazing that the new Wiggle is a female because it means little girls have one more role model to look up to.

Exactly people grow older! 28 years of the wiggles. It's a child hood classic for people like a lot of shows (sesame street, barney, etc) but with those shows they dont have a "face" like actual people. People would be very upset that wiggles would end due to just people getting old. Having new people in the wiggles to continue the legacy is a great move

Because of her, I finally talked to my doctor about endometriosis and to see if I had it since I was having a lot of problems with my periods. Last month I was diagnosed with it and had the surgery to remove the infected parts ect. I can never thank her enough for educating about endometriosis and how its helped me. Made so much sense too in my life and with my own period struggles.

Usually I hate when they remake children's shows but with the wiggles I can't really tell whether I like the new show or the old one better. They did a great job with the new one and it feels like the old one in some ways but also brings fresh stuff to the table

I'm 22 yo with no kids, no childhood connection to the Wiggles, and I just watched this entire documentary, completely enthralled. I'm not sure what that says about me, but it probably means Australian Story makes really good videos.

Everyone is like “she’s not a real wiggle” but I grew up with the wiggles and I like her. I think she’s perfect for the part! She seems fun, passionate and kids obviously like her! That’s what makes a wiggle!

i hate how everyone hates on emma coz shes female. when i was little i watched the og wiggles and literally all i had was dorothy. but that was even before she had her own ballet show. as a little ballerina growing up i wouldve loved emma so much and actually wouldve had a character to relate to (sorry dorothy ily too) i just wish people would be more open and accepting when new people are introduced. we're lucky the wiggles wasnt cancelled.

I don't understand why so many people are being so protective of "the original yellow wiggle". This documentary isn't about him, it's about who Emma is as the Yellow Wiggle. She has clearly done an outstanding job. She's dedicated, talented, strong, gentle. She's an excellent role model for all the little girls and boys who will watch her as they grow up. I'm glad I watched this, she's such a graceful woman!

I would have been more upset if she was just a random woman because hey yea women in everything it is great but its also shoved down throats quite a bit, and to do so to kids is just.....disturbing. BUT, to know she saw Greg, and saw the spirit he gave to the role and how he touched the hearts of kids and sang them to sleep every night and made that impact, that to me is just fine. I love that they kept it in the family so to speak, that's the way it should be. So no, I don't care the new yellow wiggle is a woman, I care that its Emma, and she already knew how much of an impact this group of silly singing adults has on our youth.

I remember watching the original wiggles when I was little! I mean everything changes, the guys were starting to get older and probably we’re getting tired, I think change is good and they’re doing wonderful! Now the little girls have a role model in the wiggles with a great story ! And can we talk about her red hair in her wedding photos? GORGEOUS!

Emma and Lachey’s story is so sad. She is a beautiful soul and doesn’t deserve all that pain and discomfort. And Lachey is obviously deeply in love with her and so so sad to have lost her. I hope they both find true happiness.

They couldn’t have picked a better yellow wiggle to replace the original. She’s wonderful and my daughter enjoyed watching the original and watching the new. Most people don’t like change but a lot of us did a good job accepting it and welcoming it. Emma is nothing short of amazing.

I think that showing kids that the wiggles are people who have health issues is an important thing- so that if maybe they grow up not feeling well, they don't feel "broken" they can feel like if Emma Wiggles can have a health issue and also feel joy along side one another- they can too. It normalises health issues and also having a job and responsibilities to carry on with.

I grew up with the first wiggles. People hate change, it’s in our nature to feel uncomfortable. Have your opinions on this string young woman, but she is an inspiration to so many people around the globe, and she is trying her best. All things must come to an end. The original wiggles had the feast of their lives to live, and just by this documentary, you can see that touring and working left no time for personal lives. Prefer your childhood Wiggles, that’s fine, but don’t hate on other people just trying to inspire and make kids happy. I am so glad that the wiggles have been going for this long and the only way they can is by having multiple generations to be part of the franchise.

You guys do realize that the original wiggles can’t go on forever. They eventually had to retire. Yes we all miss them but they are performing for a new generation now and that includes bringing in new faces. Those who have grown up with the old members should all be grown up now and have a life of their own. Let the new generation enjoy them and move on.

It’s the curse of the yellow wiggle. Greg and Emma both realized they had chronic illnesses after ignoring it for a long time because the show distracted them. Never realized how stressful the wiggles could be.

I grew up with Gregg, Murray, Jeff, and Anthony. I was obsessed with The Wiggles. It broke my heart when news broke over the internet that they were retiring. But I remember feeling the slightest bit relieved when I heard Anthony Field was continuing the legacy the original 4 had laid out. I have Endometriosis and it is absolutely excruciating pain, enough to pass out and it's true you don't get a pass for any of the pain or any of the sickness until you have the surgery and people see that you need surgery to control it.

Emma is such an amazing addition to the new wiggles in my opinion, my nephew can't get enough of her! It makes me so happy seeing his smile when she come on the tv and it warms my heart, I will always love the old wiggles but the new is amazing and is a new start so my nephew can have his own wiggles childhood. The "children" who knew the old wiggles are 20 years old and can get over themselves. The old wiggles had to retire sometime, they are not our monkeys to dance and sing whenever we feel like it. If it came between doing the show and their mental/physical health they would choose themselves just as anyone else would. They had an amazing run but it was about time the torch was passed so they can continue the show because people would have been even more pissed if they just cancelled it. I used to do hour long performances in high school at Disney and a LOT of people fainted/sat down because it was too much. That being said, Emma is an absolute ray of sunshine. She's gorgeous and has such a beautiful smile. I hope all of them are doing well, including the original wiggles.

As a 20 year old who grew up with the Wiggles, I have absolutely no problem with the new Wiggles. They arent MY Wiggles, but I dont need to learn from them anymore. They are a new generation of Wiggles for a new generation of children, teaching them all the things I was taught when I was younger.

Jess they didn’t retire, the three of them literally dropped dead, Greg had an actual sleeping disorder and died in his sleep, Maury died of age, and Jeff he died of some stomach thing

I grew up with the original wiggles. I loved them so much, but I LOVE the new wiggles. My son loves the new wiggles. You cant expect people to continue a job for the rest of their lives, eventually things need to change or to end. The fact that they found 3 new people, who work with such chemistry, is rare! Emma is wonderful and my son absolutely loves her! He cant talk, but the minute he sees her, he squeals. He gets so fricking happy!

I love how even though they separated, they were still very good friends and didn't harbor any bad feelings towards each other. Although I am sad that they are not romantically together anymore, I am still so happy for them and their accomplishments and excited to see what they do next!

I volunteer with special needs children, and one of the kids I’m super close with is also named Emma, and the Emma song helped a non verbal child learn how to make the sounds for her name. I know it’s just a show but it means a lot that it was able to help someone learn

honestly, as someone who has struggled with mystery chronic health problems, its super easy to dismiss that sort of thing. it tends to happen slowly and gradually, you don't notice how sick you are until it hits a breaking point. it becomes your new normal and you don't think about it because it doesn't seem different

not handling/dealing with physical health will take a toll on your mental health as well as relationships, i think its beautiful that they have that respect and love for each other to help work on themselves as well as their career :)

I watched the Wiggles growing up, and now my baby sister (13 years later!) does too. Emma may not have been around for me in my childhood, but I strongly believe she is the best thing that's ever happened to the Wiggles. Hearing her story made me appreciate her so much more than I already had. She is such a strong, beautiful woman!

I was sitting in the audience at carols in the domain when the original wiggles did there last Tv broadcasted show and watched them officially hand over to a new generation of wiggles. Was an incredibly special moment. The wiggles formed a few years before I was born and I sat in the audience just a few months after I turned 18 to see them out. I also went to school with Paul fields nieces and nephews which was pretty cool.

as much as i love the all-men wiggles since thats what i grew up with. i think adding a woman is very healthy for their child audience. I was only comfortable with same-sex adult (women) growing up but the male wiggles made me start accepting all genders at the young shy age i was. which is what i think a lot of boy children need too; a strong female character to grow up with

I feel as if some people (namely y'all saying that they suck or the wiggles are 'guys') forget that these new wiggles are not for us. They are for the children of the next generation, not us! I mean you can be a werided out by the new Wiggles but that doesn't give you reason to shit on them. They're people, and this story proves that they are. They see the shitty comments and the nice comments as well. Just let them live and know that they are not for us, they're for a small children cheering in the crowds and looking up to them on the TV screens

Okay people here’s what ACTUALLY matters, THE KIDS! People who actually engage in the show are kids between the ages of like 0-7 who don’t care and those are the people this industry makes money off of. The fact that someone who doesn’t even watch their content or plans on buying tickets to their show doesn’t matter. These wiggles are these kids original wiggles and the kids are the people the content is ACTUALLY going to. Also if any of y’all point out a spelling mistake imma go off so just don’t. :)

I love the wiggles now, as I did when I was 3 years old. You don't lose the wiggly spirit because the hosts change, it stays with the right people to continue the legacy. I am so glad kids these days get to grow up with the songs I had and many more. Emma is awesome!
