What’s the Difference Between Appropriation and Appreciation? 

I've literally come here, as a black girl, to see if maybe I'm not understanding...why I'm not raging when I see white people wearing things like box-braids...I still don't get it?? I've read the definitions and I am soo with standing up for the black community but this...? What is wrong with it? I believe as long as someone is taking the culture seriously, they are aware of the roots...and they present it in a respectful way then there's no problem. I really don't understand why people get dragged for things like this...

It feels to me in these cases as "cultural" is used instead of race/colour, as white people aren't allowed to complain about appropriation. I'm Norwegian and as white as they come, and nobody gives a flying-F about the way my cultural heritage is being used and abused all across the globe: The vikings. I'm proud of my heritage and the great things the vikings accomplished (though not so proud of the bad things they did), and I'm happy for others appreciate them too. Okay, so they didn't have horns on their helmets, the show Vikings gets most of their "facts" wrong, and Marvel?; they got the names correct and that's about it. But people love the viking culture and that makes me happy.

Dread-Locks are not race-specific. Sorry. Native-Americans had dreads. Hindus have dreads.

It's getting to a point where no one is allowed to show interest in other cultures apart from their own, but at the same time is expected to be an expert on every other culture than their own. People don't want others to be shallow with their beloved traditions. I get it. But people invent new things, new forms of thought through looking at something, putting it in a different context and creating something new. It's called creativity and human cultural evolution. And it does not mean that racism does not exist. It just means that culture is not a secluded thing in a box, especially not in a globalized world with access to the internet.... And if it is, it's kinda sad. It's creating segregation

Culture Appropriation is different with everyone, I still dont see a point of it.

I really don’t get this because everyone in the world borrows from different cultures daily...whether that be food, music, customs etc. If people wear clothes from my culture to purposely make a mockery of it then I see a big issue but if someone wanted to simply wear a cultural costume/style with out any intent to offend then I don’t see any issue why someone of a separate culture can’t wear something from a different culture......

I am White from Europe and my grandpa was Morrocan and Nigerian. My Take on cultural appropriation:when someone takes something from another culture and claims they invented it. For example you can wear cornrows if you’re non black but don’t call them boxer braids. Just like fashion designers appropriated Romanian traditional clothing and claimed it was a new style. Like wear it as much as you want but don’t claim Christian Dior invented it

When people describe cultural appropriation like this and try to set all of these knit picky guidelines to cultural use, it divides humans even more. A beautiful part of humanity and how intertwined we are is how we can share and exchange cultures (like we've been doing for literally thousands of years). So, to act this way about culture is just segregative and divisive.

How can you look at someone who is wearing something or has a certain hairstyle that is not part of their own culture and assume they're being hateful(if they clearly aren't acting that way or making fun of it I mean😊) . Wouldn't someone who is doing this be appreciating it since they chose to wear it? Whenever I wear traditional indian clothes (sarees, salwar kameez) on hindu festivals , or even just casual kurtis and palazzo, sometimes people think I'm trying to be something I'm not. I'm not trying to be Indian. I got these clothes because my husband and I are hindu and we appreciate his own culture. As long as you acknowledge where it comes from and aren't being hateful I don't even understand why this is even a thing... People in india really love seeing foreigners wear their clothes in a respectful way

in my opinion, cultural appropriation is when someone takes something from another culture and calls it their own. there was a video where a black woman went inside a boba shop asking for the manager who was ASIAN saying they're culturally appropriating because boba is an African thing when in reality it originated in Taiwan. cultural appreciation is when someone takes something from a different culture and spreads its good name as well as maybe supporting the person of that culture (eg: getting a Chinese takeout from a Chinese business).

Yep, after having another debate about this enter my life I've come to study the issue again and am reassured by the 95% of people who agree that those who point the finger when it comes to cultural appropriation are causing another form of racism. Culture is to be shared. Making it exclusive on a personal level is elitist which is going full circle and becoming just like the capitalists who really do exploit minority cultures. Of course it's important to know what we are representing, where it came from and how it might be seen by others, but this should be done through kind education not anti-racist racism which just breeds hate. None of us chose where we were born and any of us could be any of us.

By definition cultural means "relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society" basically meaning how we act how we dress ect; so for example if I go to Japan to live their I would start to adapt their culture in to my daily life and at some point it will be a part of my culture so no cultural appropriation is not thing. Thanks Vice, I learned a lot. You don't just get to pick and choose from someone else's cultural heritage like it's a gift shop. That's why I expect anyone that feels like they really need to wear jeans, drive a car, or wear glasses, to tell the people around them the story behind those things. They are proud symbols of my cultural heritage as a European and it's deeply inappropriate when other people just use them as if they were theirs.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos about this topic lately because I’m white and have been considering dreading my hair. I have my own reasons for it, but the majority of videos I see are from black creators who say that as long as you are respectful and give credit to its origins then it’s okay. And also not to perpetuate negative stereotypes. I was always confused by people getting upset about locks but I still try to learn. They say it’s because they get discriminated for it but if more people do it and acknowledge the roots of it then wouldn’t it normalize it and help get rid of that discrimination? I fully plan to acknowledge the roots of the hairstyle and keep my hair clean and tidy to not fuel those negative stereotypes and I can only see that as a helpful thing at this point. I also heavily stand up for the black community in the best ways I know how. I went to several BLM marches this year, I’ve had difficult conversations about race with other white people, I voted in this election as well. I want this hairstyle because it would benefit me in certain ways, and I think it is absolutely beautiful. I just hope I don’t run into too many people pointing fingers and saying “appropriation” without actually wanting to hear my side because that would make me want to get rid of my locks.

Why is a white girl having such admiration for another culture that she incorperates it into her own style ,why is that disrespectful and "cultural appropriation". No one owns culture, including clothing, hair, and decoration styles. Here is how to deal with the 'issue'. Step 1: You dress how you want, cook what you want, decorate how you want to, etc, according to your individual tastes and preferences. Step 2: If anyone complains about it, or accuses you of 'appropriating culture', you politely tell them to fuck right off. Step 3: If Step 2 doesn't quiet the racist screeching about appropriating because only people of a certain race or culture 'own' a thing, you simply ignore the idiocy and continue to do you. As a bonus, feel free to mock them, either openly or in private, as is deserved.

There are obviously too many people in this world who love getting offended by everything, the key is to have a positive outlook in life and see the lighter side of things. If someone does something silly according to your culture or your ways of living, simply have a laugh because they may have a different interpretation or view to you. There is no need to jump straight to the conclusion of "exploitation" and play victim. We need more people in this world to be strong minded, stand for your way of thinking, your values, but also be willing to listen to one another and use each other's ideas to advance together.

I'm indonesian and honestly cant relate with culture appropiation things. When i was in school, there was a day that students need to dress up with indonesian's traditional outfit. You can dress up with javanese's traditional outfit, balinese's tradutional outfit or any traditional outfit. It not must be perfect and play-by-play. With these costumes we went parade around school area. Sometimes we also did fashion show. As long as i remember, this activity also has been done by kids in playgroup. Just sharing. People have a problem with this concept precisely because the majority from that culture is encouraging those of the "dominant"(no one should consider their culture, or a culture dominant, or more important] culture to wear, use, and learn about their way of life. But what happens/happening is the minority has an actual problem with it or is offended when they misrecognize something that is the start of mutual understanding, harmony, and acceptance as offensive. I'm living in china and a year or so ago people here were outraged because the west had someone of chinese haritage represent china/chinese culture. They were outraged because they saw that person as not beautiful and a poor representation of chinese traditional beauty. For people in the west it was a choice of someone that was beautiful according to standards of accepting wemon for their naturual beauty along with correctly choosing a model with the correct heritage. Did they look into why the west chose to do so? no, the most didn't. Did the west look into what china would find appropriate, or culturally accurate? no, most companies wont. I brought that up because; is it always correct for us to assert our ways of thinking, or ideals on another's culture, just because our's, the west's, the US's culture demands it based on only our past? It is almost as if the say, feelings, or even the original culture doesn't truly matter to those who aren't careful about mislabeling what is and isn't appropriate and offensive. Most of the time ending up with the origin being labaled, "ignorant". In another video on youtube about the same subject, a lady commented on people being penalized for wearing a certain style, or dressing a certain way. While on the other hand celebrities being idolized for the same style, even if that style isn't in their ancestor's culture. I agree that this is diabolical. But are we going about it the right way? Is making sure that two group's cultures are separated going to help? Will keeping a group of people of a "dominant" culture away from a culture they previously made fun of help? Do two groups of humans not always find ways to be ignorant of the other, or in denial of the other throughout history? Will those people truly come to appreciate it if they don't try other cultures, or things themselves? could you appreciate a privelage, a food, or a place without experiencing it yourself? If you are kept in the dark about something, you will more likely feel paranoid about it, curious about it, or even satirical towards it. Sadly people are innately afraid of things they don't know. Kid's will often make fun of things they are unaware of, thinking it is weird. Think about it this way, if people appreciated, or were open to other cultures in the first place, there probably would be less of a problem now. Why perpetuate the problem, or why keep continuing a cycle of misunderstanding, and guard dogging against outsiders. Dont keep thinking that people in china, or other countries are ignorant of social issues. Here in china, most universities require a professore to have experience abroad in the west, or such. china has thousands of years of history. history ranging from oppressing thier own minorities, 75 minorities, not including the "Han". and being a punching bag of the west. how do people believe that they don't have the right to choose who can take interest in their culture? is the west assuming the rest of the world is too dumb to have a word about this topic? People in the US, West, need to be careful of only seeing their world. And be more open to the problems and wishes of the rest of the world. Sometimes your problems might seem like a mountain. In reality it is only one, in a range of mountains. People need to be careful of creating more locks on doors that would otherwise lead to helping a people or culture break out as trends. Your offense might be a lock created from your own personal problems. You might just be putting a lock on others just like yourself. Sharing and appreciating other cultures is a concept that has been around for thousands of years. It's what makes us human. No group of people born into a certain ethnicity "owns" any specific part of a "culture". That's not how society works.

As a French man I get offended that people throughout the world use parachutes, stethoscopes, take photos, use aspirin, antibiotics, blood transfusions, modern dentistry, that they pasteurise items, put food in cans, drink champagne, that they go to cinemas, that they eat baguette, that they use blenders, calculators, metric system, that they drive in cars, diesel vehicles or helicopters, that they wear denim, bras, bikinis, raincoats, polo shirts, that they use sewing machines, ball pens, pencil sharpeners, staplers, hair dryers, that they read braille, play bagpipes, tarot, roulette, oboe and piano.....not Oh and I rock that keffieh that my Morrocan brother in law offered me for my birthday because I love it 🖕

Different cultures are not based on races, more like countries and their own traditions. An american white has totally different cultural references than a spanish, swedish, german or hungarian. There are common thing we learnt from each other, but we all have our traditions and cultures. As I said, it's not a racial thing, so why they make it into a race war again?

TL;DR version: Cultural exchange isn't so polar that folk can just go around judging people so blindly. The video focuses on the fashion industry, and in that light, everything mentioned is valid. These comments however go beyond that to a certain extent. Like, if I were stationed in Japan and ended up learning Japanese and eating Japanese food, that would me assimilating (not appropriating), as my life would be less convenient if I didn't speak Japanese there. On that same note, me eating Japanese food at some restuarant in Canada would be cultural drift (not appropriation but not assimilation either) - drift being long term historical interaction between cultures resulting in cultural elements just being left there. Another example, there'd be a huge difference between me wearing my hair in a style that's native to the Black American community having been around the culture or having a personal connection with people of that culture (appreciation) vs me wearing it because I saw it in a movie and want to look "edgy", "different", or I'm being tongue-in-cheek "gangster/hoodrat," knowing that at any time, I can take the hairstyle down - at that point, it's understandable why people from those communities might be uneasy. With the way media has become so widespread, though, I'd like to believe that what a lot of finger pointers and call-outers are deeming as "appropriation" is actually just modernised cultural drift. People are coming across culture via media, which is great considering that it allows folk to realise just how connected we are as human beings, but sucks when folk misunderstand, misinterpret, or adorn the elements to reinforce stereotypes they come across. I saw a lot of comments on this video of people saying they should be able to wear whatever they want. And that's true. No one can tell you how to dress, but suggesting (read as "passive-aggressively demanding") that people of a community "share with you" something that holds a significance that they might not have the time, patience, interest, or vocabulary to articulate ought to be handled with a bit more grace.

How is it possible, that there is no european people in this video? We have cultures too. I'm german. Our culture includes Christmas trees (yes, we invented these things). Is it ok, to have one without beeing german? Is it ok, wear a necktie, if you aren't from croatia? Is it ok, to play soccer, if you aren't from england? Is it ok, to sing silent night, if you aren't a german? Is it ok, to bake croissant, without beeing a french or austrian? What's about furnitures from IKEA?

I'm pretty sure the whole black culture in America came from several different foreign cultures. Soul food has mix of French and Caribbean, and most of the rest of culture developed on plantations as slaves, so depending on the nationality of plantation owner, that's where it came from.

I remember when a couple of years ago there were some news here in Romania about foreign designers (Tory Burch and Dior ) using traditional Romanian wardrobes and patterns for some of their collections. But the fun part is that they kinda just copy-pasted it on everything. We were both happy and kinda annoyed at them. Happy that someone finally used our patterns on their clothes, and they were seen by lots of people, annoyed that they didn't bother to at least say or present them as being Romanian =))) (and if i recall correctly at first they said that it was original design or smth like that). We didn't cared that much about it ,since well was free publicity, and we were happy that they choose our traditional clothes for their collections

Wtf is this? I am a Chinese and I feel very proud and happy when I see others outside of my race wearing Sam Fu or Cheong Sam. It's even cooler when they make some changes to the style of our traditional wear to fit their culture. Like WTF, why is everyone so sensitive about everything. Grow up, please

Cultural appropriation is a passive way of being offensive to a persons culture. By adopting a style look or even cuisine without knowing anything about the meaning or use behind what you are adopting and using it in an inappropriate way to stereotype or discriminate against that culture. Cultural appriciation is respecting and taking an interest in a culture wearing a certain clothing to an apropriate event or enjoying native cuisines and even making an attemp at preparing cultural food yourself, and overall understanding the culture while taking part in it. A white girl with dreads isn't cultural appropriation nor is it appriciation because african culture goes deeper than a simple hairstyle. Cultural appropriation; a person wearing a native american head dress, chief uniform, and face paint running around screaming and making a fool of himself. Using elements of native american culture to stereotype an entire group of people. Cultural appriciation: wearing a kimono to a special japanese event, trying the local foods and educating yourself more on japanese culture. Maybe its just me, but if someone missuses my culture, I'd just correct them. I'm Chinese, I was flabbergasted when a white girl wore a really nice qipao, tailor made from China to her prom, but the asian americans were not supportive of it. Like, there is no context clash for wearing a qipao AT ALL. ANYONE can wear it, for any occassion, at any time. I'm not from the US so please educate me.

In order to point out that something is a “cultural appropriation”, you need to be insanely well versed, educated, and familiar not just with your own folklore, but with the culture, tradition, and history of every race, nation, ethnicity, group on this planet. These people who claim they are the sole originators of some traditional food, custom, or dress pattern, are oblivious to the fact that minor or major variations of their beloved tradition exist almost in every country. “Cultural appropriation” is just another western self-flagellation tactic to make these woke, progressive grifters feel better about themselves.
