What’s the difference between Roland VG and GR?
Please support my music: mikemed.bandcamp.com
Visit www.ambientguitar.net/ for more info about Ambient Guitar technique.
I used here music from one of my videos: “Ambient Guitar: Soundscape #15 (Godin, Roland, Strymon)” • Ambient Guitar: Sounds...
Over the years I was asked questions about Roland VG and GR processors because I use them a lot in my videos. One thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes people don’t understand clearly the difference between these two guitar processors though this difference is fundamental.
They all work with a hexaphonic pickup which is often called a “midi” pickup though it’s not quite correct. So let’s start from this point.
A hexaphonic pickup can be a separate unit like Roland GK-2 or it can be an inbuilt one. They all have this 13-pin output for special cables.
So what’s the “midi” pickup for?
On the contrary to a normal pickup it gets the sound from each string separately. That makes possible to process each string independently from the others. This is the key for easy sound conversion to MIDI notes.
But there’s one thing you should remember. It’s only a pickup - not a converter.
So how can we use this option of processing strings separately?
There are two popular lines of Roland guitar processors that use “midi” pickups and can be easily found on market today: VG and GR.
Now I use two of them - VG-99 and GR-33, they are very popular and really cool devices.
The fundamental difference between VG and GR is that VG is a GUITAR PROCESSOR and GR is a GUITAR SYNTH. You can separate them as a processor like Boss, Digitech or Line 6 and a keyboard synthesizer like Roland, Yamaha, Casio or whatever.
One more time again. Processer and Synthesizer. The only difference is that you use strings, but not a keyboard to play.
It means then that if you want to play with a sound of Piano, Sax, Violin or even Drums you should choose GR. GR converts the signal from a “midi” pickup into MIDI notes and plays inbuilt samples of these instruments.
VG does not convert guitar signal to MIDI notes to play them internally. It has no samples of those instruments.
But being possible to process each string separately VG can give you a variety of interesting possibilities. One of them is an alternative tuning. For example you can add -1 octave bass sound on 6th and 5th strings or drop down 6th string to D immediately. It’s also good for emulation of different types of guitars like Fender Strat or Gibson LP.
It can also play some synthetic sound (NOT SAMPLES) like GR-300, PWM, BOWED/PIPE…
The last thing I want to mention is that VG-99 does have a MIDI convertor that sends you midi notes to an external device via USB or MIDI 5-pin output. I personally found it useless because it makes too many mistakes while converting.
Thanks for watching!

Very helpful and the important points in focus. Here on youtube you can see so much bs- vids and great informativ vids, like yours. I'll give the GR a first try and try to get a used VG, later. For me as session bassist( we play ambient/jazz/ prog) is more important to be able to use different sounds ,like violin,flute,sax,etc. You name it. Take care, keep the groove and god bless.

I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO!!!! I bought a vg-99 YEARS ago when it first came out and was very disappointed in it because I was looking for a SYNTH and thanks to you I just learned why I was so unsatisfied. Sadly, its also the reason I never picked up another "synth" cause I was like "well if this is Roland's 'top of the line synth' then I guess all those others aren't going to be any better. " So thanks so much... I'm going to start shopping for a GR synth and give it another go lol

Just so you know I'm a VG-99 programmer and there are ways to create synth sounds with no tracking delay on the 99. Check out some of my content at my YT page or vguitarforums for some of my patches if you still have the unit.

Hi Mikhail. Just found your music on the band camp website and bought the album. We listen to your music on YT pretty often and both love it but it's great to have it on the phone for the walk to work too. I think my wife might like it more than my gypsy jazz playing! Make more!

Your assertion that the VG-99 "makes too many mistakes while converting" is something that can be corrected if you set GK sens to 22 for each string - you will find external tracking greatly improves. I'd reported this to Roland at one point and they declined to correct it as support for the unit was ending but I've got a video at my youtube page called "Emperor of the Lost City of Dust" which is regular guitar, hex guitar and guitar to midi live at the same time (six stereo pairs!) and I have certain strings triggering percussion parts, some strings triggering string sounds, and other strings triggering what sounds like air rushing through a big pipe. Lots of fun!

Thanks, I will try! You are right, there were several ideas (both technical and software) to solve those issues over the time (as well as ghost fret notes when you rise your finger from the string - the most common tracking mistake), but Roland was never interested in finding or implementing any solution - this is why I dislike big corporations and encourage smaller (like Strymon f.ex.) buying their products.

I want to say many thanks for this video ! Great job for simply explain subtle differences between those two families of machine I had some difficulty to figure out (also I didn't really take time to get to know the answer) - Equally congrats for the music... In the video it sounds like Robert Fripp' Soundscapes (who uses vg 99 since a few years and gr 30 just before it, among others, if I'm not mistaken) - So great - go on with that !

Great Explanation! One Question: The GR-33 os said to have a „local off“ mode, doesn’t this represent a use case of sending MIDI to external Synths and/or Computers? Thanks!
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 2 месяца назад
You can send midi notes to play an external midi device in any mode. As well as you can play the gr-33 inner synth by an external midi device like a keyboard in any mode. Never tried local-off mode, but its idea is to make the guitar 13-pin signal unable to play gr-33 internal synth engine. It might be played only by midi-in notes that are sent into midi-in port.

It is a shame that although you make it clear at the outset that the hex pickup is not a MIDI pickup that you then reinforce the fallacy that it is a MIDI pickup by referring to it as such throughout the rest of the video. That said, an interesting video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

Where does the Boss SY-1000 fit into this? What about the GP-10? I have always been interested in the VG-8, but don't know what a modern equivalent would be.

didn't try them, but I guess both deal with modelling technologies, so they go to VG section - they don't play samples as GR does, as I know

@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 месяцев назад
I guess you can if you use it as a midi instrument (the same way you use midi keyboard). But don't wait it to be responsible. I found it very unstable in the meaning of tracking - there gonna be too many false notes. What I would recommend is the new Boss guitar synth system, it is impressive! Very fast and clear tracking.

В ваших видео вы ранее использовали процессор VG-88, оснащён ли он также миди конвертором как и VG-99? точнее выдаёт ли он миди ноты на миди выход? Сейчас реально купить 13-15 т.р. со звукоснимателем
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 5 лет назад
