I definitely didn't speak clearly enough to anyone who thought I was saying anything in support of gentrification! I was specifically referring to the crime that created its namesake from the late 1800's in comparison to the development over the last 100+ years. I meant the danger of the gangs like the Bowery Boys in the early 1920's and was not referring to more recent gentrification in NYC. The current gentrification is obviously a HUGE problem in NYC that must be addressed. I should've been more clear that I was only referring to the history of the the crime riddled namesake of the 1800's and not to massive problem of gentrification in the turn of the century that has been so detrimental to communities of color. If you want to learn more about gentrification, here are some helpful organizations that I donate to and continue to educate myself with resources like these: Learn more from NYC anti-gentrification summation of convening here if you're unfamiliar with the problem: takerootjustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/NYC_anti_gentrification.pdf Learn about gentrification in Brooklyn:www.humanityinaction.org/knowledge_detail/change-or-die-gentrification-in-brooklyn/ Support Building Back Bed-Stuy: www.gofundme.com/f/building-black-bed-stuy

Im kinda confused by your answers, the Bowery Boys were active in the 1830s-1860s? Do you actually mean them and not the Gopher Gang? Even so, you have to include the issue that the gangs were formed and were violent because most of the immigrants that lived in this area were not able to get jobs and had to turn to illegal ways to get money (which leads to increase policing which leads to increase arrests which is percieved as increased crime). The way you frame it sounds ***very slightly*** that these groups were inherently criminal or violent rather than it was the circumstances that made it so this was the only choice of possible e.g. in the post probation era, many of the residents found work as fisherman (until that industry was destroyed by gentrification, which lead to the predominatly irish population moving out and so on...). Since this is not the first time you have misstated/mischaracterized i really recommend you read (or even get your book club to read) Taming Manhattan by Catherine McNauer (i even have a PDF)!!! But please properly educate yourself and if you even think ot mention a brief history of the area in your videos please do atleast 5 minutes of research bc it shows!!!

@@Dlkny321 If many people had to turn to illegal ways to get money, how is this "perceived" as increased crime... it IS increased crime...
@joellymejia1826

@@Dlkny321 I think, and I say this respectfully, that this is a topic she doesn't know a lot about, she did a little more research when she got push back, and she wrote what she understood. Let's give her the grace that when she made the video she wasn't promoting gentrification but more so saying, "when gentrification happens, over a period of time communities start to see less crime" or something like that. She admitted to not knowing much about Hell's Kitchen so to argue it further is pointless and only going to drive her to more quick Google searches to try to defend herself.
@Dlkny321
@Dlkny321 3 года назад
@@joellymejia1826 I think thats totally fair to say! My thing is that this is the second time shes ignored/glossed over the issue of gentrification in NYC. In a previous apartment buzzed in series it took place in bushwick and the issue of gentrification was ignored and in comments Elena said she would make a commitment to talking about gentrification and a proper history of each area more in her next videos, so i just saw that as a reneging on hte commitment made to her audience so thats why i was frustrated with the 90s she devoted to both topics.

this series is really good!! i think you should do more middle class and even low income neighborhoods because that’s where the majority of new yorkers live (astoria, washington heights, bay ridge, inwood, fordham, university heights, bensonhurst, sheepshead bay, midwood, etc) it would be amazing insight especially to recent college graduates and low income people who are looking to start a life in nyc!! these videos are awesome tho
@wento5773
@wento5773 3 года назад
Hi! I currently also live in Hell's Kitchen as a nyc transplant and I think it's important to acknowledge the history of hell's kitchen, and the role of gentrification has played in many nyc neighborhoods including this one. New York isn't just a place where young adults (like myself and folks in this video) who are able to afford very high cost housing and live out their wildest early 20s nyc dreams, but it's also for families and primarily people of color who have lived here for generations and now unable to afford housing and are driven out of their own neighborhoods, which also in turn contributes to the myth that poor people and people of color are "unsafe", when reality the city never provided any resources for the community here until rich people moved in. The neighborhood is literally called "hell" referring to its previous residents that were primarily refugees and immigrants. Gentrification is a reality in nyc and it's not productive either to just wallow in gentrifier guilt, but I think it's the bare minimum to inform ourselves and be cognizant of the role and impact we have in the places we are residing in.

Could you please elaborate on the "the myth that poor people and people of color are "unsafe" when reality the city never provided any resources for the community here until rich people moved in" ?
@wento5773
@wento5773 3 года назад
@@ILY2MuchProductions Sure! :) So there are many nuances to this and I am also not the expert on the topic either, but a few ways I think about is: 1). At least in the US, public education (along with other resources) is paid by property tax, which results in this cycle of rich people who live in bigger houses pay more property tax, and their kids go to well funded schools that have well developed after school programs and sports parks etc. Whereas poorer neighborhood who lives in worse housing pays less tax and has less money dedicated to these resources that help youths and adults lead healthy lifestyles, which result in many having to turn to "the street" and is often deemed as "dangerous", when it's one of the only ways for people to feel a part of a community. This is an issue that is often discussed in the US where your zipcode is often a strong determinant in how many opportunities you have and even how long you will live. www.nytimes.com/2020/05/19/learning/how-much-has-your-zip-code-determined-your-opportunities.html
@wento5773
@wento5773 3 года назад
@@ILY2MuchProductions 3). The last point is a little bit more abstract but also something I have been thinking about after listening to this podcast citationsneeded.libsyn.com/episode-54-local-crime-reporting-as-police-stenography The way we define crime and think about violence is often interpersonal (think burglary, robbery, gun violence, etc). And all of this is very scary especially for the victims. At the same time, we don't think about wage theft, (companies not paying workers overtime) overpolicing, denying trans people their rights, generations of racism, and other wrong acts towards these as "violent", when they are violent by denying people their humanities and basic needs. So when the narrative is that these people are dangerous, it's lacking nuance because it's just attributing them as the aggressors and the bad people in the first type of violence I described, but ignores that they are also often victims of the second type of violence, and they are pushed to have no choice but to steal etc.

I definitely did not mean to put those two together and wasn't speaking clearly enough. @@ElenaTaber thanks for the clarification. Truly, i think your an amazing person. Im glad that you take time to research the history of the neighborhoods you showcase. I could move back up north, if i chose to make certain ( a lot of) sacrifices, but it is SOO DANG EXPENSIVE, and my suport system is not there anymore, i kinda low key feel like my city was taken from me. And there are soooo many reasons for that. Its complicated and cant be blamed on any one thing. Im rambling. Lol. Keep up the good work. as a European just the thought of paying 4k is insane. beautiful space but we would probably pay around 600 here
@pema9945
@pema9945 3 года назад
depends where in Europe, in Paris / Amsterdam definitelyyyyy more than 600 euros
@fictionfatale3913
@fictionfatale3913 3 года назад
@@pema9945 that's not true - the average price for a 1 bedroom apartment in Amsterdam is around 700, and paris is a little more expensive. London on the other hand is even worse than new york for housing
@pema9945
@pema9945 3 года назад
@@fictionfatale3913 hmm def not that level of luxury though, I live in the Netherlands (not too far from Amst) and that's the average price of rooms usually, but then again prices might be lower for native dutch people

Paris is way more expensive than 700 for a 1 bedroom😂
@fictionfatale3913
@fictionfatale3913 3 года назад
@@LoveLaRieXO I lived in Paris for three years between 2016-2019 and my apartment was £700 (I’m not sure what that is in dollars). Don’t get me wrong it was knowhere near as nice as this place, but comparative to London and most UK cities it was cheap. If you go through French speaking estate agents and renting companies it’s far cheaper, because they often rent the same apartments to foreigners for 4x the price

$4000 for that 1 bedroom (even without pandemic) seems too high for Hell's Kitchen...
@Ausbos5

800 of it is in view. The higher the floor the higher the price. Someone 14 floors below her probably paying 3200
