When you’re on deployment overseas, a lot of times you’ll randomly sing songs, quote movies, or bring up pop culture references when you’re on patrol. One day, my best friend and I were in the truck in a little village called Ameria near Baghdad and it was over 120 degrees that day and our Lt had misread the map and our convoy got a little lost while we were waiting for coms. He knew the story behind this song (I didn’t), and he just started belting out the chorus as we were driving around lost looking for the area where we were supposed be going to for patrol. At that point, it became the theme song for our deployment in our truck. We all learned the words and would sing it multiple times a day. He passed away (unrelated car accident) about 7 years later. Every time I hear this song I think of that day, him, and have oddly fond memories of rough times. Hard to explain…but I love the song.

This song is made to sound like an old monaural transistor radio to begin with, with the radio sweeping frequencies and stations, until this song begins, then as the song progresses, the sound resolves into more "normal" stereo. Pink Floyd used a similar technique in Wish You Were Here in 1975, to move a story from the past to the present. As others have said, this song was written after singer, Tony Scalzo, read of an elderly couple just driving off, getting lost, and perishing.

This was actually based on a true story. Well, a positive reimagining of a true store. An elderly couple disappeared and their grown kids couldn't find them. A while later they were found to have crashed their van or car and both were unfortunately deceased. Here, we get a happier ending. Or, you can interpret the lyrics as the couple entering heaven/paradise. Never getting older, road paved in gold...nothing but joy:)

"Was there more or less opportunity?" Yes lol. Before the 1996 Telecommunications Act was passed, that allowed corporations to buy hundreds of radio stations, there were far more indie stations that could pick and play whatever the DJs liked. Now, the average radio station only has 300 songs in their library (insane and stupid), and playlists come from corporate. BUT around the same time, the internet (file sharing, streaming, etc) made it far easier for an artist to get their start. The Arctic Monkeys, Billie Eilish, and Justin Bieber are just a couple examples of artists who got their break via social media.

@@roncarnes5724 Cool! So lucky of you. I know what you mean. I grew up in Austin, Texas awhile back ( big college town). Big alt/indie scene in that city, BTW. Multiple alternative and college radio stations there. A buddy of mine was a DJ too at one of the stations, still does it here and there.. KVRX and KUTX (Univ of Texas) One day he'll be on for underground hip hop night, next day would be new wave/post-punk night, next night would be modern and older alt/indie rock night, etc. Different segments throughout the days. Lots of exposure to different things.

They have a great song called Fire Escape. Now that's a banger! I love this song and I love this group. I saw them at a rock festival about 20 years ago and they were great. I really can't recommend Fire Escape enough. This is a nice addition to my Saturday. Thanks guys!

Yes! Many great retro sounds in that era. Neo-Swing, 3rd wave Ska, Neo Soul; cocktail-space age-bachelor music, Sublime, Neo rockabilly and psychobilly. The Cramps and Reverend Horton Heat. What a great era of music. That's when it all went downhill thereafter.

Catchy "happy" song about a tragic event. The Chorus is talking about them (the elderly couple) after death, wandering the highway (of gold) never getting older, always summer, etc.: "You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere They won't make it home, but they really don't care They wanted the highway They're happier there today, today" The shadows are their ghosts. Creepy eh?

The 90s was the last time there were local DJs with the ability to break a band. I lived in Orlando at the time and a DJ on WJRR launched a local band called Seven Mary Three to national exposure (their whole first album was great start to finish, but you can pretty much stop there). Now most radio is centralized out of NYC or LA or whatever. Also, with respect to CGI, this was only a year before The Matrix (and 7 years after Terminator 2), so CGI definitely existed. But it was a lot more expensive. One-hit wonders existed going all the way back to the 1950s when they first started tracking recorded music sales. The 90s weren't unusual in having more or less of them.

There were plenty of one-hit-wonders before and after the 90s, and plenty of 2-4 hit wonders who had one strong album then faded or broke up. While a lot of 80s 1HW got play on MTV, in the 90s they had a much more developed mechanism for buildings hype around the latest hits, like Total Request Live and Headbanger’s Ball.

Agreed. A lot of "One hit" wonders were/are actually 2-3 hit wonders, or semi-hits lol. It could be multiple hits on ONE album or a few hits/semi-hits spread from one album to the next, or different decades (Cusp). Noticed a lot of bands back then would have a hit in the late '80s and have another one in the early '90s or have a hit in the late '90s and another hit in the early '00s. And still happens today with modern bands.

There were clubs with a scene in the 90's. Now, only bands on the same management will fill certain festivals where as back then the cross marketing of rap and rock and alternative was welcomed, it benefited all bands involved. Now bands HAVE to do what they are told by the higher ups or will never get a shot.

This song always brings me back to my time stationed in Alaska while enlisted in the Air Force, specifically one coworker who LOVED this song. The song's meaning didn't really hit me back then. It's a happy sort of song, while still sad given the events that inspired it. I guess growing older will make you think about/feel things differently.

Thanks for doing this one! In 99 I was a bartender at this 24hr bar on the beach & I would always play this song on the jukebox while I worked. Years later I couldn't find it again because I couldn't remember the name so thanks! I think I may have to work up an acoustic cover of this - I never realized how beautifully dark these lyrics are!

This song is based on the true story of Lela and Raymond Howard, an elderly couple from Salado, Texas who drove to the annual Pioneer Day festival 10 miles away in Temple and didn't return. She had Alzheimer's disease and he was recovering from brain surgery. When they disappeared, a reporter from the Austin American-Statesman wrote a series of articles about the missing couple. Fastball bassist Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading the articles (the band is from Austin). "It's a romanticized take on what happened," he said. Scalzo pictured them "taking off to have fun, like they did when they first met." Thirteen days after the Howards went missing, they were found in Hot Springs, Arkansas, about 400 miles from their destination; they were still in the vehicle (an Oldsmobile Delta 88), which had veered off the side of the road and was hidden in brush. Scalzo had finished writing the song when he learned that the couple had died.

I believe this song is about purgatory and the afterlife, the chorus really hints to it. They actually left in the middle of the night but died in a car accident. The story by hind the song is interesting. Frontman Tony Scalzo got the idea from a newspaper article. It was about an elderly couple that drove off in their car on vacation. Never to return. She was in early stage Alzheimer's and he was in recovery from brain surgery. They were later found dead hundreds of miles off course at the bottom of a raven. With the wife in the driver's seat.

Fastball was being pushed as the next big thing. I read a review of their CD which stated their sound was"Beatlesque", and the drummer even has the black oyster pearl drum kit like Ringo in the 60's. But as often happens when groups are compared to The Beatles,(Bay City Rollers) they turned out to be a one hit wonder. They did have a great sound, but they couldn't come up with a follow up song.

Trust me, Lex...Every decade has a ton of One Hit Wonders. Music has become more mechanized since the 1990's, so there are fewer now, but before the 1990's ever decade had a TON of One Hit Wonders. The 1960's through the 1990's produced a ton...you've probably reacted to a bunch of them.

I'd say in the 90s it was much harder to "Break in" to the industry. These days anyone can hop on any number of social media sites/apps and upload full songs (or teasers), you can start up your own spotify, amazon music, and even itunes "shop," and post/share links everywhere and get a large following (I mean look at Tom MacDonald: NO record label helping him out whatsoever and he's hitting the Billboard top lists). Back in the 90s you didn't have any of that. The internet was still a fledgling commodity, social media hadn't been invented yet, most people had dial-up and wouldn't even think of spending 45 minutes to 2 hours downloading a single song (while tying the phone line up the entire time) so the only way to get anywhere was to do all the legwork yourself. You had to play a hundred indy venues just to get your name even remotely recognized, had to send demo tapes to every record label you could get an address for, try to get yourself on TV through talent shows with brutal audition selection, or just hope and pray that some bored recording exec/scout just happened to catch your show and liked your stuff. If you weren't already "connected" in some way you didn't really have a snowflake's chance in Hell. The only "up-side" was record labels were always so desperate for "the next big megastar" so they'd do an album or 2-3 singles and put them out there to test the waters. Radio DJs had a lot more sway in what was played during their sets, though, so if they didn't like your music didn't matter if the listeners would have, you didn't get played.

It was fine enough at school with the cable connection but at home even "text-only" pages could take a solid 5-10 minutes to load on dial-up. And I was only allowed one hour a day because it tied up the only phone line in the house. Heh, and we didn't have cell phones back then, either. Kids these days will never understand.

They are driving a maroon convertible. The Howards were driving a hard top I just noticed. This Song was me and my girls song back then. We had a lot of fun. Sad that the old folks ended the way they did but this song makes them together for all of us! Thanks fastball and Jesus
