i just turned 23 and consider myself as a student cinematographer and i dont even think i get to be a director of photography of a hollywood movie in the future. I think there are lots of talented people out there and chances are slim. However, i just wanna master the art of cinematography and dont really care if i will get to work on an ultra huge production film later on.

Good plan, you'll become a master in no time with that mindset. Always be a student ;)

In a sane world, directors would compare later scripts with the one that they first saw and reflect on how far the story has been removed from the story they fell in love with. I mean let's face it, the best movies are the ones that were directed by the writer and is therefore able to keep the artist's view paramount.

1st Hollywood is properly called the Film Industry...not the Art Production Studio.....I worked in it and that is what young people do not really get. The bean counters are safety first oriented and that impedes the creative impulse, which do you think wins out when $100 mil. as at stake?

that's what gets me. Is Hollywood the only industry that spends 100 million to create a product? No. it's like this image in there that this is the only industry that's a business. If you hire an industrial designer to make a new product do you tell them how to do their job? Do you pay a mechanic and immediately send notes to them on how to replace any particular part? Hollywood's problems are a lot more fundamental than whatever creative director #3 is doing. indeed, if the tampering leads to a worse film then the executives are screwing their own brand. It's why people don't have an opinion on whatever paramount is doing or what universal studios is about but get excited when you mention Pixar. Netflix even, who is putting order of magnitudes more money into original content than a little 100 million. The onus is on the executives to worry about business models, brand and expenses. Probably innovation as well- all of the other companies are doing it. anyway. That's just my two cents.

Very well stated, I'd never spam my work on a link if it weren't for the fact it's exactly what Jack describes in a new President taking office: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KRxJ_NKbXx4.html The Early Inauguaration is a whole lot like what John Gergory Dunne called 'the monster in the box.' When Disney told he and his wife they wanted a 'happy ending' on the Jessica Savitch story (in reality she drowned, likely drunk in a gulley as result of car wreck.) Disney execs made clear that they're writing the check, do what we want or else. What Dunne referred to as the monster in the box, in addition he said if they didn't finish the job he might have lost his insurance after just having heart surgery so.... Kinda like when a new POTUS takes office. Do what the money peeps want or else.....

i gotta admit the irony, anachronism, and anticipation of apprehending your serial-killer suspect in a drive-in theater, especially given the right movie being projected, makes it sound all the more compelling if not hilarious.

Really great interview and insightful input. Hard to imagine this is the same guy who directed Megashark vs Giant Octopus and looks like he's been doing a lot of ultra low budgets for infamous B movie companies ever since. But his advice is sound.

I've posted similar comments on other Film Courage vids, but this is great. On one hand it's too bad there are apparently so few views on this and other vids on the channel, but on the other hand it's a cool secret resource for us, eh? :-) Keep it up.

The editor really ought to have put a high pass filter on the interviewer's audio track. That low hum is distracting.

After hearing all this, which I have heard before from screenwriters, I have more admiration for Woody Allen. He has the $$$ , the talent, but ultimately does not need to go through these issues. Insightful interview. Thanks, Mr. Perez for taking the time. F.C. always a fan.
