As an exol for years , I would like to say that I'm a huge fan of Lay’s music. As I told you last time, Lay has succeeded in producing his own music on his own, due to his use of traditional musical instruments in his modern artistic works.
Lay is such an incredible ambassador for China. I love how he integrates classic Chinese instruments, references, and culture into contemporary music. Amazing performer, composer, producer, and mentor. He has always been, and will continue to be, a much loved, cherished, and valued member of EXO. What a fabulous artist!
He owns it alright....Lay has a successful solo career in China, his status bolstered from all his years in Exo. Lay is a main dancer of Exo. Also a singer, songwriter, composer, choreographer, film maker and producer. He has his own studios in China, Lay Zhang Production Studios, and 3 years ago he started his own label. He is the hardest working man in the industry, as he is part of creating art, and has his hand in everything he puts out. He has several albums, winter album, many mvs, and is on his third tour called Grandline. He is a well known A+ celebrity in China, and is always supported by loving Exols around the world. A krump master, and an excellent dancer. Check out some of his earlier mvs Lose Control, Namanana, Honey, and a must see "40-second visualizer for a very anticipated mv Flying Apsaras".....but the Flying Apsaras dance practice is the must see video. Lay has been incorporating his Chinese heritage into his music, especially in his last 2 albums "Lit" and "East". You need to start checking out individual guides to the Exo members, by CESAR OH. 💙🌺
Lay is such a playful producer. He has that ear that loves to mash traditional and modern instruments. and he doesn't stop; he keeps releasing songs that are interesting and cool. as much as i love him with EXO, he really shines best as solo because he can show his music style. thank you for this reaction! looking forward to more...
In Lay's "Veil" MV, the silver tiles we see are silver Mahjong tiles, which is a game that is made up of tiles a little like dominos. Lay's just happen to be extra fancy silver to show his status, etc. On one tile you see the Chinese character for East, which is his previous album that "Flying Apsaras" is on, and another was the Chinese character for West, which is his current album title. The instrument you hear -- which you also see being played at the beginning of the MV -- is an Erhu, which is a traditional Chinese instrument that is a little like a cross between a violin and a cello. On one of Lay's first solo albums Sheep, he has a song called "Mask" and it's all about striving to keep on the right path and to accomplish his goals even in the face of adversity, as he struggles to be accepted and understood. It's about not letting others influence your choices when you know the direction you are headed is right and to believe in yourself, etc. So, an alternate message in "Veil" could be that he is now taking the mask off and he no longer has to hide who he really is because he has accomplished some of his goals and he is learning what path he needs to take in order to find the success that he is looking for, etc. Or, he is telling others that they should be brave enough to take the mask off, etc. Check out this clip of Lay on the survival reality competition show Idol Producer, where he explains to a group of trainees the meaning behind "Mask," ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6OOiszMmrN0.html. Lay has also posted two dance practice videos for "Veil". You are in for a treat when you check them out. The MV was the English version of the song, however, in his first "dance practice"/performance video you can hear the Chinese version of the song. Lay has branded his style of music as M-Pop, which he says stands for mixed-pop, meaning that he combines traditional Chinese sounds and instruments, like you hear in this song, with modern hip-hop and pop beats and styles, to create a style all his own. And he showcases traditional forms of dance by combining them with modern dances in order to bring Chinese/Asian/Eastern culture to the world in a new way. As with everything Lay does, this whole song, MV and choreography was created by him. Once again, he wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself, including the English lyrics. He even created the beats himself. And he also helped choreograph and direct the MV, etc. As you have discovered, when it comes to Lay's solo work, he pretty much does it all himself. He has a hand in all aspects of his solo projects.

Lay is such an incredible artist - he has a hand in writing, producing & choreographing. He also sings, raps & dances - so talented & is extremely hard work if you watch any of his behind the scenes. He has this cool concept of “East meets West” in a lot of his work - 2 of his albums are called East and West. Veil is on the West album & Flying Apsaras is on the East album (watch the dance practice - it’s insane). I also love his Sheep MV.
I believe Lay got the title "King of China" bc he started incorporating traditional chinese instruments with the usual pop track with the great beats. He calls it M-Pop. He's also a great singer, dancer, rapper and producer. 🫶🫶🫶

I didn't re-watch the MV since a long time and I have totally forgotten how much English this version has XD. the version I listen to on Spotify is mostly in Chinese. And I love his silver hair in this MV. I love silver hair on idols in general. Please add his song "sheep" to your list for checking out! EXO x SKZ collaboration is my dream! I doubt it will ever come true T_T. But SKZ have covered some EXO songs, that's all I got T_T. btw the EXO song "first snow" is going viral in Korea at the moment (the song was released 10 years ago) and so many people are doing the challenge on Tiktok. and Lay was the first EXO member to join this challenge (fingers crossed that not the last one, but my hopes are low), that was so wholesome to see!
I totally get what you mean with the silver hair.... Since I am more into the girl groups I loved the look on Sakura, Siyeon and Dami, CL of 2NE1 had it once and Lisa had the grey hair in their debut "Whistle" ...

In fact, many EXO members are talented, starting from writing lyrics, music producers and many more, but most of them are not trusted to make their own music, but there are also some songs that get away with a little rebellion 😭🤣, that's why when Lay went solo his solo career, he shows this more often.
