ANDDDDDD this is the final video of Star Trek TNG (for now......) before I get into the movies!! WHAT a finale this episode was! From start to finish it held my attention and contained some amazing effects, music, acting, and fan service. Can't wait for Generations next week (or now on Patreon! ) Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)
Ollie, you're a good kid, and this is going to surprise you. 1:25 - I'm along for all Star Trek reactions of yours, kid. Hell, if you dive into Star Wars that you haven't seen yet, I'll be there for that, as well. Anytime you do a movie or show, that I *HAVE* seen, I'm there. I don't generally watch reactions to movies/shows that I haven't seen, because "spoilers", ya know?
I have found that Trekkies' opinions about different media in Star Trek is often incredibly subjective and unreliable. But TNG fans in particular can sometimes be kind of toxic. TNG the show has its share of bad execution, continuity errors, and lazy and/or sexist creative decisions. But that doesn't stop the entire fandom from enjoying the media the way that TNG die-hards complain to this day about other Trek media--the TNG films, DS9, Voyager, or even Discovery. I think your open mind is a healthy way to deal with the fandom, who can sometimes be toxic.
At its best, Star Trek's strengths are its contemplative scifi plots that make you think, characters that get you emotionally attached and make you feel, and this episode is honestly just a great example of both. A really fitting end to a series that often tried to ask questions more than give definitive answers.
"Why are there so many cats everywhere?" "Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature, An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature; Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses." --(beginning lines) Ode to Spot, by Data
It was sweet too because the bridge crew poker scenes were a running past time in many episodes for everyone but Picard - so seeing him join the table with his friends and dropping the formality of Captain at the table was just beautifully unexpected and touching as a fade out.
i got a bit upset at that scene, it was the end of an era. I actually have a press clipping of Patrick Stewart in his first scene in 1986 before it came to the uk. I thought, nah it will never be popular. When I see the poker scene, I really do feel a lot of emotion that this era and feeling will never come again.
@@darrenc2721 Don’t get me wrong - I hate the scene because it is the last - but I do appreciate what it is. I would hate the last scene of it was on the bridge or 10 forward or on a transporter pad. I just think the intimacy of the poker table was nice if bittersweet. I watched with my dad every week from the premier when I was 11 - had only seen some TOS but remember the headlines and flak the new show got at first. I loved it from jump though and only missed episodes once I was in high school and doing other teenagery stuff.
@@trekkiejunk It makes no difference. Picard always acted with integrity. Even in the new show, there is that sense. Finding out that he lead an evacuation fleet is everything that is needed to know, and Picard becoming Admiral to do so is very much in line with what Picard would do. What you are stating is what every Batman fan had with the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. Many fans had the same sentiments with that story that you have with Star Trek Picard. At least they did not go the Last Jedi route with him, like Star Wars did with Luke.
All Good Things is often considered one of TVs greatest series finales. It hits on all the nostalgic points fans who watched the show for 7 years would want. And man when Picard sets down at the poker game and says, “I should have done this a long time ago,” gets me every time.
It IS good, right?? Now imagine if you had watched that after 7 years and almost 180 of the show and how much more impactful it was for everyone who watched it from day one. It really is one of the best series finales ever.
I remember it so clearly! I was in my early 20s and used to rent the videos as they were released. Just thought at the time (and now) it was virtually perfect. Bravo!
@@matty_ottawa8173 Same here... After 7 years and 176 episodes to watch this with like 30,000 at skydome was amazing! The cheering at every mine t was so epic. Remember that they played Yesterday's Enterprise and Journeys End BTS before the airing of the finale
It's kind of incredible just how badly the movies and the Picard show get the characters' personalities. They're like totally different people played by the same actors. I'm dreading the TNG reunion next year, but I'll watch it anyway, even having zero faith in those guys to make it anything other than awful.
I couldn't agree more. The TNG movies lacked a lot of the character growth that made the show so great. The original TOS movies (at least 2, 3, 4 & 6) understood the characters in a way the TNG movies never did.
Absolutely. They don't seem like the same people and it's as if their character growth was to grow more cynical and jaded as time went on. The earlier shows and movies portrayed a more hopeful, cooperative future. Now it's just poorly written, shallow conflicts. I do hope that Picard S3 will be an improvement but from what I've seen so far, I hope they prove me wrong. Strange New Worlds is the only new show I've enjoyed.
Amen. Unfortunately one can't track down every post that proclaims the TNG movies are awesome and point out they are deeply flawed and overrated and did a tremendous amount of damage to continuity and the franchise itself. I feel sorry for Ollie here because one has to be a very knowledgeable in Star Trek to realize just how bad TNG films are- the drooling First Contact comments are definitely going to be hard to tolerate.
@@lucasbachmann Oh, come on. It's clearly the best TNG flick. It's up there with the best of the TOS movies, even if it's one-dimensional compared to the show at its best. It towers over the other TNG movies, at least. Frakes earned his wings.
P.P.S which classes are you taking on winter quarter/term/intercession? American universities are not sll on the same type of time-frame. A big portion are on the semester system with 12'-16 weeks of instruction in a term. Some schools on a semester system have short brief winter terms known as intercession for the studious self motivated student, and they can be as short as 2-4 weeks. In Washington state, most universities and community colleges are on the quarter system, which 10 - 11 week terms. Summer term is shorter at 8 weeks and doesn't have a dedicated week for finals like Fall. Winter, and Spring. Some schools are on a semester system also offer some shorter classes lasting 8 or 10 weeks in addition to their normal 16 week classes. Semesters can be cruel since it means math classes can teach every topic in the book and English classes can require 7 essays or a 14 esearch paper and 4 shorter essays. Quarter systems leave the instructor pressed for time, which makes it impossible to cover every math topic. English classes will generally only assign 3 or 4 essays. In community colleges in Washington state, the research paper get its own class instead of speaking it into English 101. However, California community college students who want to go to a UC or even CSU will need to partake in a 3 course english sequence- 1A,1B,1C or 1A, or CSU 1A 1B. 2. I know the numbers don't mean anything to you sonve you're in Canada. Here's the translation: tge California system is hard. Washington state schools may nit even require a 2 class English sequence. However, if you want an AA transfer degree, English 101 and 102 (research paper) is required. However, even in the UW doesn't require English 102 (English 182 at UW). Generally community colleges have a general numbering system that is consistent across each state. Hence all CC's on this state will offer English 101 and 102 but universities may call it something totally different. But since numbers are consistent across cc's st a state, it makes it easier for universities to offer articulation agreements on classes that transfer. In fact, in our system in Washington, an & in a class name means its college level AND a transfer class that universities will accept as transfer credit AND probably will have an equivalency i.e English &101. Whereas, California community colleges code their classes differently. They don't include ampersands. You won't see EWRT& 1A. They just call it EWRT 1A. In fact, numbers in the single and double digits are usually college classes and numbers reserved for 100 to 200 are remedial. Additionally, since California is so big southern California community colleges have a slightly different number system from northern California. Instead of English 1A, community colleges in Southern California call it English 1 and English 2. To find out the course equivalence for 1B and 1C, you'd have to speak with an advisor both from your CC and university you desire to transfer if you need 1B and 1C but your CC in Southern California doesn't offer it. Sorry to bore you. If you wanted to transfer from a Canadian college to an American university, then you may end up -retaking LOTS of your courses since none of your classes may transfer. HOWEVER, if Canada offers an IB, International Baccalaureate diploma, your scores may grant you credit at some American universities and even community colleges.
😂😂 When he said that I had an instant mental image of Worf wearing Clint Eastwood's Dollars poncho over his uniform while holding a big leather handbag. Now thanks to you he is also wearing an enormous oversized sombrero LMAO
I'm in Toronto and we watched it at the Skydome with 30k other fans. Talk about an amazing experience. Right before, they played Yesterday's Enterprise.
Deep Space 9 is my favorite of the Star Trek TV shows. It can be intimidating to take on due to its heavily serialized nature. In fact, it took 10 episodes to wrap up the series as opposed to the other shows which only needed 1 or 2. However, it has some of the most complex characters and intricate stories in the whole franchise. It's definitely worth watching, either on your own or on the channel.
word. Deep Space Nine is incredible. Especially after Berman and Braga moved on to Voyager in Season 4 and really let Ira Steven Behr and the guys run wild with the serialized plot. By far my personal favorite.
Heavily serialized? Not even, there was a through plot with the dominion, but it was hardly a can't miss one episode or you'll be lost kind of show like Dexter or Breaking Bad. But you can easily watch that show without being intimidated by the fact that it's seven season long. And they took 10 episodes to warp things up because they did it right, but they are the ONLY ten episodes you "must" watch in order. All that said I agree DS9 is unquestionably the most human of the Trek shows, characters that are actual people and not superior acting do gooders. The relationships between people like O'Brien and Bashier, or Bashier and Garak, especially Odo and Quark are some of the best interpersonal interactions you will ever see in Trek. I could have done without them dropping a certain slur in Far Beyond the Stars, but given the time frame being depicted i see why the character said it, but hey Trek has never shied away from telling hard to hear tales about the human condition.
Ngl,, DS9 is easily the worst modern Trek series, and without the Dominion War it would be the worst series of all Trek without argument. I mean they had to change the show idea & format by adding an actual Starship because the show sucked so bad.
I second that!!! and third, fourth & fifth that!! As part of the generation that grew up with this Trek (it came out the year I graduated HS!) It has ALWAYS been my fav Trek, Picard will ALWAYS be my fav & *THE best* Captain, & the Enterprise D as you so aptly put is "A SEXY BEAST" will ALWAYS & forever be my favorite Enterprise! ~ENGAGE!
@@illuminotme825 Yeah. Season one was bad enough, but then along came season two... The first episode of season two wasn't half bad, I thought. But the story completely disintegrated by episode three, and that was it for me.
I love this finale episode. How it brings full-circle Encounter at Farpoint with Judge 'Q', the return of Tasha Yar and the regrets some of the crew has- with the ability to change the timeline; including the so touching scene at the end when Picard comes in the Poker room, looks at everyone individually and says "I should have done this a long time ago" and Deanna responds "You were always welcome"- so heart-warming but that's Picard admitting that as Captain, he could have mingled with the Bridge crew during rest periods instead of being the headstrong 'I'm the Captain so can't have personal relationships with the crew'.
Heads up. It doesn't come up in Generations, but after that story, Worf is assigned to Deep Space Nine (and therefore the show). They have to consciously give him reasons why he's around in the Next Generation movies. Without knowing this, his absence at the start of First Contact and how he enters the story would be really confusing. But just keep it in the back of your mind that after Generations Worf gets a new assignment and the character has to pull double duty between TV and big screen.
Ronald D Moore was the writer of many of the best episodes in Star Trek TNG (including All Good Things), as well as many Deep Space 9 and Voyager episodes. He went off on his own to create Battlestar Galactica in 2003, and in my opinion, it's the best TV series I've ever seen. Highly worth watching if you ever get a chance.... just make sure to watch the 3 hour mini-series before jumping into season 1. The miniseries sets up the show, and without it you'd be lost.
His new show “For All Mankind” is great too and just finished its third season. It follows space exploration in an alternate timeline where the USSR beat the USA to the moon, altering history as we know it from that point forward. Ronald D Moore… just great
Not to mention the series goes full circle with Picard back in the courtroom from the first episode, and then Q's lesson finally paying off after everything they experienced in the series.
This episode is Trek at or near its all-time high. I'm a big fan of DS9, less of Voyager, Enterprise or the newer shoes and movies. The TNG movies don't live up to TOS in my view, but others really like them. Can't wait to see your take.
Good and bad are subjective opinions, you will soon enough make your own judgements of the movies but I personally enjoy them. All Good Thing however I think we can all agree was a great episode. I would continue to watch your reactions of the series but I would caution that the first 2 seasons are a little slow but they do build the foundation for the very good seasons that follow.
Hi, I just found your channel yesterday. First, I am watching all of your Star Trek content. Which is great, not many people react to so much Star Trek. Then I plan on going back to all your other movie reactions. Keep up the good work!
The series finale aired in May and the first TNG movie was released in November of the same year, so while there was an ending, it didn't last long. We got four movies over the next eight years.
Absolutely outstanding final in a superb TV show. Patrick Stewart and John Delancy work so well together. I love the end where Picard just looks around slowly at his bridge crew, then says, "I should have done this a long time ago." Beautifully acted and directed. In a lesser actor, this might not have worked, but Stewart took his time and milked every second of this moment, so well done.
The thing to remember about the show's technobabble (Treknobabble) is that they DID have a science advisor, who simply tried to make the writer's ideas sound right. Some of them are far out, but at least have a threadbare connection to theoretical science. Got a little crazy sometimes, but mainly the science jargon is just there to make the stories work.
Wait til you watch Star TrekPicard! Don’t judge too harshly. Trust me it’s worth it. Season tow they stepped up their game! Season 3 comes out next year! Bringing back the whole cast for season 3!
Chief O’Brien, the officer who did ships in a bottle, is the only actor to be in the premier and the finale of two Star Trek shows. As the same character.
It's funny u say "Blueprint". I dont know if anyone has mentioned it but this finale was the inspiration (or blueprint) for 'Avenger's: Endgame'. In fact, Kevin Feige has stated multiple times that he borrowed many things from Star Trek overall. He borrowed the end credits from Star Trek VI where the original crew signed their names as the final credits. He also borrowed the name from Star Trek: Voyager's finale, "Endgame".
I remember when I watched this one as a kid, how thrilled I was that they brought it back to the beginning with Q standing in judgment. I love love love Q. If you're a Q fan, I have recommendation. There was a TNG book called Q-In-Law that I love, because in it Lwaxana Troi briefly obtains the power of the Q (Squee!!). Picture that, a larger than life, force of nature character like Lwaxana with almost unlimited power. In the book, that scenario plays out in a manner just as delicious you would imagine haha.
Agreed, especially the scene where she is giving her standard Daughter of the fifth house speech while dealing with Q in an unexpected manner. Made me grin like mad. Q Squarred is pretty damn good as well, lots of TOS call backs written well into that tale. It even takes you all the way back to the TOS episode where no man has gone before and Gary Mitchell, the guardian of forever and we get some Jack Crusher action as well.
Q is such a delicious character for a script writer....there are literally no limits to what can happen! Q-in-Law is a great book...I think it would've made a great Next Generation episode....better than Q-pid anyway!
The movies are not bad, 7 and 8 are great, the problem is with 9 and 10 and even they are not that bad if you'll think of them as episodes of the show, if they would have been done as episodes then they would probably be very loved, but as movies they didn't deliver for the expectations there were at the time after 7 and especially 8 that were very good, and I hope you'll continue with Star Trek TNG after the movies, ST: Deep Space Nine is also a very good show but it's more serialized so you can't watch an episode here and there, you need to binge all the episodes to understand what's going on.
If you want to sample the other series, I'd recommend Season 1 Episode 8 of The Lower Decks, "Veritas." Although the series leans heavily on (often obscure) references to previous shows , that episode has enough references to the movies and The Next Generation that you won't be completely lost. And it includes a cameo by Q!
Thank you for choosing to ignore negative feedback about the movies. I LOVE the next one ST GENERATIONS. My ratings.. GENERATIONS a 9 FIRST CONTACT a 10 INSURRECTION a 6.5 NEMESIS a 7
TNG being nominated for a Best Drama Emmy in its final season was the icing on the cake, and the first Syndicated TV series to be nominated for such an honor. TNG lost out to Picket Fences that year.
This finale ties in so well with the FANTASTIC second season of Star Trek: Picard!!! I STRONGLY recommend you immediately follow TNG movies with the Picard series.
Loved all of your Star Trek reactions so far! I'm glad the franchise has brought you so much joy already. Where I would go from here (after the movies): There are so many episodes that it would probably take you years to watch it all, so I would try to find some curated lists for all the old shows (TOS until Enterprise). Maybe watch one highlight episode from each to get to know the characters and setting for each and pick one that intrigues you. Most people will say that TNG and DS9 are the best, but i guarantee there are plenty of gems to be found in any of the shows (except NuTrek). Thankfully, all of those shows use an episodic format where you can typically just drop in on any episode and follow along with the story. The exception to this is DS9, which went on to form major story/character arcs over its latter years. If you're looking for a more serialized experience, that show definitely takes the cake. DS9 is the most different from the others in tone and structure, but in a good way! However, that contrast is most appreciated once you've experienced a lot more of the "conventional" Trek shows like TNG or VOY. Voyager unfortunately rehashes a lot of ideas from earlier shows - you could tell it was becoming harder and harder for the writers to come up with new sci-fi concepts every week. But - it totally doesn't suck. Enterprise is generally liked the least but again - some of it is pretty good and definitely nowhere near as bad as any of the new shows. Keep up the good work! We need more people to discover these shows for themselves as an alternative to all the bleak dystopian sci-fi of the current times - and the world shall be a better place. I'm sure of it.
Star Trek voyager is great as well. At first I didn’t like, but by season three it was and still is one of my favorite series. I think Star Trek voyager gets overlooked by some people because it came right after the very good Star Trek TNG. There’s lots of Borg episodes, plus, they encounter many new species and one of them is much more powerful than the Borg.
Movie #7 is 'Star Trek Gnererations' which features both Kirk and Picard in another temporal (time) anomoly situation. How can that be when the original series movies and TNG take place 3/4 of a century apart? Whoopi Goldburg's Guinan has the anwere. It'a all Nicolas Meyer's fault (oh you'ld like me to connect the dots for you, lead you from A to B to C)...Meyer, who directed Star Trek's II & VI, in his earlier years wrote and directed 'Time After Time' in which H.G. Wells actually invents a time travel machine and pursues Jack the Ripper from Victorian London to present day (1979) San Fransisco. the Ripper is played by David Warner who is in Star Trek V and is Gul Madred in TNG's 'Chain of Command' and Wells is played by Malcom Macdowell who is Dr. Tolian Soran in 'Generations', the cross over film taking the audience from the TOS cast to the TNG cast. It is the first voyage of the Enterprise B...the last voyage of the Enterprise D...leading into the next film's ('First Contact') Enterprise E which is unquestionably the sexiest ship of all. Side note: film numbers are dropped from here on out and feature titles only. "Generations-First Contact-Insurrection-Nemesis' in that order. Then you'll like (at least some of ) 'Star Trek Picard' season 1 which begins first few episodes of him in this future time as it's now actually been 25 years since 'All Good Things' aired and he is, in fact, living at and operating his vinyards at Chateau Picard. Upcoming 2023's season 3 has got the fanbase really excited as it will feature the entire Next Generation cast.
Ollie, I first saw TNG through the movies, too. I knew enough about the characters through osmosis, and it was enough to enjoy the movies. I think you'll like them, too(First Contact is rad)
I was 12 when TNG started. I watched it all of it and taped it on our VCR. All my friends knew don’t call me at 7 on Saturday because I was watching Star Trek. One of the best shows of all time. 🖖
Looking at the amount of views you get for Star Trek episodes, it's a no brainer. Lots of people want you to watch the series. But I also have to say that there will be lesser (boring) episodes that won't catch an equal high amount of views. Your plan is solid: TNG movies and then TNG episodes.
So nostalgic. There is a show with an old Picard and it's called, um, 'Picard'. I see various negative comments below. I think it has its moments, Season 2 was better than 1, and I have my fingers crossed for 3. Deep Space Nine became my favourite Star Trek show, though I have a fondness for Enterprise - I think I would follow Scott Bakula anywhere, and his journey as captain is an interesting one, sadly cut short with an insult of an episode. There's a whole universe out there waiting.
You're watching the remastered TNG with redone visual effects that came out several years back, that's why the visual effects are really great. The original visual effects were fine too for this episode from what I remember, but they were only standard definition.
John DeLancey has said in an interview in order to get that sense of maliciousness mischievousness Q was known for in the scene with the primordial ooze, he was dripping it on the camera man’s face while filming. Didn’t warn anyone about it either.
This remains one of the greatest television finales in the history of the medium. This is not hyperbole. It is considered fact in the industry. Check out just about any list of the greatest television finales and you will find “All good things…”.
If you get around to Voyager, it's a pretty easy show to get into . There's no major story arc or anything. it's just about getting their little lost ship home. Every episode is episodic and you can watch them in any order. Skip the first season. Don't bother with the premiere episode. Just catch some of the good episodes like The Thaw or Dark Frontier or Bride of Chaotica or Someone to Watch Over Me *(featuring one of the sweetest moments ever in Star Trek) Personal taste may vary. The show had a lot of fun, goofy episodes. It was light. It was dark. It was even popular enough that the studio kept putting a lot of money into it.
This series ending was good- without the movies. I like that they left them just playing cards, so you knew more adventures were to follow. It left the opening for the next TV series- Star Trek Deep Space 9 (which I think is still my favorite). If you go back, I’m down to watch the TNG episodes!
It's just an exceptional show.... one of my top 10 TV series of all time. My test of great movies and television is something called the "eye test". TNG, Breaking Bad and multiple other television series have been off the air for several years now, and if I (or people in general) can look back and watch them years, or decades later and it still draws you in, then that is why those shows endure, and why it will attract people from any age. Glad you found this show. I hope you continue your Star Trek journey even after you watch the movies. It would be a disservice if you don't watch Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, and regardless of what people tell you.... Picard (it is only 3 seasons). Gene Roddenberry's vision is an ideal and a vision of what humanity could collectively be if we can ever "aspire". It is a transcendent story and vision and is relevant now more than it was when he first envisioned his concept and pitched "Wagon Train To The Stars" which is what his original title for Star Trek was. You can't go wrong with anything Star Trek. Good luck on your future journey.
How can someone that understands Gene's vision and idealism support a show like "Picard"? It is the exact antithesis to the utopia that Roddenberry wanted to put out there and completely undermines all that came before it. I will never understand.
It's great to see someone enjoying TNG, it really is a great show. I for one would like to see more Star Trek reactions. Even if you choose not to do anymore, I hope you continue to watch. The original, TNG, and Deep Space 9 are all really wonderful.
The episode I feel you should watch for Data that is an absolute must see is “The Offspring” season 3 episode 16. Honestly, might be a critical episode overall for the series in a way for Data.
Thank you for watching one of my favorite TNG episodes. I enjoy TNG's "Generations" and "First Contact" movies, and watch each of them about once a year. I see Generations as more change-philosophical, and First Contact as more action. The TNG "Insurrection" would have been a great tv episodes, but most people want more action in big movies, to why I believe people don't like it as much. Insurrection is probably the most Gene Roddenberry type of movie since it deals with an ethical issue. Nemisis, it was ok, but the villain just did not do it for me. I wanted to see more Romulan society and I ended up getting a human-clone and the Remens, a sister planet in the Romulan solar system.
I wouldn't get too excited about Star Trek 10 as being a grand finale. It was not planned as the end of the series, so it doesn't have that wrap-up bow you are hoping for.
Star trek 7, aka Star Trek: Generations is sort of the passing of the torch movie. It's bigger budget than the TV episodes and has that movie quality/style and I've always liked the ideas in --in.-- it.
