Suprised that you are cutting back the hydranga at this time of year. I was always advised to leave it overwinter until the new buds form before cutting back and seem to get great results

Hi Rob, another great video I just wanted to say, that when you’re talking about pricing your job and allowing for the hours you’re going to be there, and of course the waste you need to take away etc… in my experience, my only worry would be that you’re trying to price enough to make sure that it’s worth your while doing the job, but do you ever worry about the customer saying that it’s too much and then you lose the job altogether?
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices 8 месяцев назад
Charge/ quote what you want to be paid not what you think the customer will pay. Otherwise you will fail . Good luck.

That looks really good. If you are only going once a year this cant be avoided but normally you prune weigela shrubs in the late spring after they have finished blooming so you dont prune off next year's flowers. Hydrangeas normally in the spring so the old flowerheads give the new buds some protection against the frosts. Due to practicality sometimes we all have to prune at the wrong time of the year. You will get less flowers but they will still grow fine

Thank you Phil. You’re right we are sometimes governed by lots of issues. This will now be a weekly visit during the season and monthly during the winter. I am hoping to make a massive difference.

May I recommend RHS Pruning and training. 800 plants. What, When, and How to Prune by DK publishing. You may have to get the roof bars to get bigger ladder. I do have 6ft and 8ft Henchmans which also have the platforms you can lean into and be even more sturdy and safe especially with deep hedges and extensions. The width of the ladder base is the important measurement for van transport. Thinking of getting a 10ft or 12ft as well. A ladder is for life so 400ish could be a good investment. 😊

On jobs that I'm unsure how much waste I'll accumulate i charge £5 per bag i fill and add it onto the price at the end of the job. Eliminates any risk of getting stuck with a load of waste and customers always seem fine with this when quoting, i think they actually like being able to understand the break down of the quote this way. Keep up the good work in this wet miserable winter! 💪

I don’t mean to be a Karen rob but watching you butcher that hydrangea this time of year makes me wince 🤣 because of the soft nature of the wood it’s supposed to be done around late feb/March, or whenever you think the last frost had passed. The brown heads protect the soft wood through winter. That said rob, il be interested to see how that goes 😄😄 Always like to hear how you go about pricing 👍🏽

I agree that jobs can take longer than expected and the underestimated waste too. But I believe that this shows attention to detail and being a conscientious worker, giving a good service. Anyone can go in with a hedge cutter, butcher everything with it to get away as quickly as possible knowing they've agreed on the price. But some customers I've had are as bad, they point everything out they want doing then say, what do you reckon, an hour? I blame the tv makeover programs, an army of people go in, putting in ponds and pagodas, slabs and decks, all done in an hour including the adverts! Taking pride in our work is often our 'Advert' ! Like other comments, I would have left the hydrangea, but again as you say, we have to do as the customer asks and they are the ones that pays their money and makes their choice! It all looks very neat Rob!

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices It will be ok. I bet the blooms will be top heavy! I once had a woman that wanted hers cut while it was still green and flowering, I said to leave it til the new year, but she dived into my tool box for my secateurs and cut no end off. It was lovely and green the next year with few, but big blooms. She would also cut loads off of her roses when I wasn't there and leave it laying in the beds, it kept the cats off, but I muttered a few choice words when I grabbed the odd piece I didn't see.
