On the Hunt for Chipmunks:
Our journey begins with Mr. TravelON’s first attempt to find the chipmunks early in the morning among the rocks along the coastline of Caleta De Fuste. Despite the initial setback, his determination doesn't wane. After a quick breakfast recharge, he returns for a successful second round, complete with feeding some friendly chipmunks their favorite snack: nuts!
Factual Insights on Fuerteventura’s Chipmunks:
Despite their name, these 'chipmunks' are actually Barbary Ground Squirrels, originally from North Africa and introduced to Fuerteventura in the 1960s. They've since become a beloved part of the island's ecosystem. Thriving in the rocky areas along the coast, they are known for their friendly nature and interaction with visitors, though feeding them is discouraged to maintain natural behavior and diet.
Where to Find Them:
The Barbary Ground Squirrels are predominantly found in rocky areas along the coast of Fuerteventura. Popular spots include Caleta De Fuste and the areas around Las Salinas. Their approachable nature makes them a favorite among tourists, offering a unique opportunity to observe and photograph these charming creatures up close.
Travel Tips for Wildlife Enthusiasts:
Mr. TravelON shares essential tips for anyone looking to visit and hopefully spot these chipmunks. From the best times of day to find them active to respectful wildlife viewing practices, this guide ensures you're well-prepared for a memorable encounter.

@@MrTravelONWorldSusan is correct. They live on salt water rocks in the sea, they absolutely go mad for anything with a high water content. We found grapes and cucumber the most effective.

They like fruit aswell because of the water in it. You can give them water too if you can find something to put it in! I used the cap and one of the cheeky sods picked it up and tippes the water into his mouth 😂
