CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hamlet (Mel Gibson) tells Rosencrantz (Michael Moloney) and Guildenstern (Sean Murray) why his mother and the King have sent for them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Franco Zeffirelli directs his third Shakespeare adaptation (after Romeo and Juliet and Otello) with this film version of the tragedy Hamlet. The titular prince of Denmark (Mel Gibson), returns home to his family's castle of Elsinore after years of attending school in Germany to find out his father has died and his uncle Claudius (Alan Bates) is the new king. To make matters worse, Claudius has married Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude (Glenn Close), whom he has unusually strong feelings for. Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost (Paul Scofield), who asks him to seek revenge for his murder. In order to find out who the real killer is, Hamlet stages a theatrical scene resembling his father's death. Claudius is upset by the production and leaves to arrange for Hamlet's murder. In the ensuing confusion, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonious (Ian Holm) instead of Claudius; Hamlet's lover, Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter), goes mad and commits suicide; and eventually Hamlet and Claudius both meet their fate.

I loved this movie. For whatever reasons, I emotionally connected with this film version of Hamlet more than any I'd seen previously.

Same here. Word for word as it was written, but delivered as regular speech, not speeches.

I have of late,-but wherefore I know not,-lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises; and indeed, it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory; this most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o’erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire,-why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?

Wow... had no idea Gibson could pull this off so well. Bravo. As many have expressed, Mel brings Hamlet into connection.

MEL GIBSON PERFORMANCE IS WONDERFUL IN HAMMLET❤

I don't understand how Mel Gibson's Hamlet was worse received than Kenneth Brannagh's. Gibson injects so much humanity and depth into this character.

There’s a few reasons 1 Gibson was a matinee idol ( never a good thing unless you’re a Barrymore). 2 The role is deemed sacred, therefore off limits to the guy from Road Warrior. 3 Gibson was considered the handsomest man in Hollywood, since when is Hamlet supposed to be a stunner. 4 I believe the director as well as screenwriter shortened the play to much. 5 Basically the critics were sharpening their knives the moment Gibson was cast. In truth I believe Gibson gives a fine performance in the movie. The scene where he encounters his father’s Spirit is worth the price of admission alone. As for Kenneth Brannaghs over stuffed version it suffers from being taken out of Denmark and set down in the middle of 18th century Russia. Some of his casting choices were spot on, Julie Christie, Brian Blessed and especially Kate Winslet ( the best actress of her age) as ophelia. But some were rather miss cast, in fact when they show up on screen they distract and over act. Branagh is a ok Director, but if you want genius try Orson Wells versions (any of them, their amazing) or Roman Polanskys Macbeth from 71, these two directors do more with one scene then Brannagh managed with the whole play.

The best film version of this play ever, I think. Gibson was great in this role, and the whole cast excellent. The sets and costumes, the blocking, the organization of the script, the natural speech, not speeches, that made it seem like real people talking- Gibson gets a lot of credit for pulling this together.

Shakespeare has written a timeless play. So sad that Hamlet, like many of us at certain times in our lives, cannot see the wondrous beauty, the miracle of humanity. As Carl Sagan said, we are a way for the Universe to know itself. What plays might Shakespeare have written were he alive today. The Big Bang. Plank time. Quark-Gluon Plasma. The scientist needs the artist to help convey the big ideas. Ideas nearly incomprehensible to the majority of humanity.

He's grieving his father's death, and the horrid realization he was murdered by his mother and uncle. His whole world has been upturned, he questions all. How will he right this wrong? How can he enjoy life and find meaning when his heart and mind are torn in two? He can't see the universe's wonder here, he struggles. He is relieved to see the actors, maybe they can cheer him for awhile. But, what happens when they leave?

This is the Hamlet that makes you forget that you're listening to Shakespeare....it morphs to everyday english. Thats the altitude of the acting and directing.

I've just come from watching that clip for the thousandth time, to see this for the first time. In isolation, I think it's an understandable, if somewhat anemic version. But compared to Withnail, it is so very lacking in all areas. It's a hard one to equal, much less better.

I dont think he expresses that Hamlet was complementing man in a sarcastic way, the movie does not show that hamlet had an affliction nor displays his disgust for it. His affliction was that the world is a stage. A prince with an affliction, go figure, lol
