Glad we are getting a double feature! I really like seeing this live version as it shows who is doing what parts. Tim & Chance are doing the really low notes in the beginning. Chance has his guitar & Austin is playing a mandolin. Adam is holding down the percussion sounds. And Austin & Rob are adding a fuller sound with their harmonies. Wish it was the longer version of the song. These guys are so supportive of each other's talents & projects.
One of the things I appreciate most about Home Free is that they don’t do vocal gymnastics just because they can. They work as a team. If they show off, it’s deliberate. When you go back to watch the live one again (you know you will), check out the facial expressions. BTW, the original lyrics shown on the live performance were “skull and balls.” I like the live version best.
EVERYTIME Adam says "skull and bones" I get goosebumps ALL OVER my body. The entire song is AMAZING!!!!! GREAT job guys. Congrats Chance for this winner.
I was looking forward to your reaction to this and knew that deep double base at the beginning would get you. Ha! And it did. Back when they did the Sea Shanty Medley, the people at Ubisoft saw it, liked it and contacted our boys and asked them to write an original sea shanty for their game. Of course Chance loved the idea and wrote this. You see and hear his love and knowledge of the genre in the song, but it also reflects some specifics of the game itself which speaks volumes of their skill, professionalism and attention to detail. Here's to us and long live Home Free.
Adam Rupp adds quite a bit to the bassy rumble with overtones and chanting Skull And Bones in the background. I am officially a Salty Home Fry now. Aaaarhh.
@@dagmar.6954 I heard the same, but I'm not so sure it is Rob. Towards the end it sounds like I'm hearing "Opera Rob" at the same time Skull and Bones is said. I have also seen Adam in his drum solos do weird voices that sound similar to the Skull and Bones.
Adam explained in the premiere that he was making that drone sound (that sounds kinda like bagpipes without the melody line) with the overtone singing. It isn't bassy, really. It's a technique to create the impression of polyphony -- he's singing two notes at once like the drone on a bagpipe does. As for the "skull and bones!" chant, everyone sees the part at 5:29ish (this video) and thinks Adam's singing but focus on his neck/ throat muscles and you'll see he's beatboxing. The Ubisoft camera operator didn't know where to aim the camera, so "they pointed the camera at Adam" isn't evidence he was singing, just that the camera person thought he was doing something visually interesting. Then watch at 7:05 or so and you'll see Rob is singing that chant (and even foot stomping a bit). Conversely, Adam's got his beatboxing hand out. Keep in mind Adam is (ever so slightly) my favorite HF guy. I'd love to have caught Adam singing (Their video makers have a tendency to go to wide shots when Adam sings, unlike the other members who get close-ups, and sometimes barely have him in frame, which drives me nuts). But this isn't it.

I LOVE the double bass in this !!!! Tim's low guttural growl just sounds so dirty and dasterdly and vile. EPIC !!! Chance is such a great pirate and he did a great job on this song. I just re-watched your reaction to this song, but NOW ( March 2024) they have taken this song and done their own video of "Skull and Bones " with them in the video and it is "WAY COOLER" than this video. YOU MUST check it out ASAP !!!!!

Great Reaction! If you go back and watch the live again.. about the time Chance starts to sing, look at Tim.... he looks like a proud big brother! It's endearing.
What a fantastic song this is. I see images of the old days where the pirates all sang together on their ship. So incredible performance. This is so very cool! A totally different sound but again so great. I would like Chance to write more often for Home Free. Home Free can just sing anything. Chance with his perfect low voice for this, Tim's slightly lower voice that goes so well with Chance's. Adam who also contributes to the bass, but also shows the undisputed beatboxer / vocal percussionist / vocal artist. Austin who also plays a musical part but then gets into it vocally with his powerful voice. And then Rob who clearly shows his rich operatic voice here. And then that harmony that sounds so beautiful.
I'm not even a gamer, but this makes me wish I were. What a fantastic job Chance did writing and performing. The guys all sound spectacular in both versions, but I always enjoy seeing as well as hearing them perform. Between Tim and Chance, they could knock the fillings out of your teeth. wow. Rob and Austin back there singing the hell out of this so beautifully and Adam, as usual, outdid himself as well. I hear be brought back the wave sounds, castanets (although it might be bones rattling, lol), and I hear cannon fire. I usually don't like when they use instruments, but the guitar and mandolin were perfect in this. This is so exciting for the guys. Quite a feather in their collective caps to be making music for a prestigious gaming company. Thanks for doing the double on this. Watched and enjoyed both. (again.) Great reaction!

I think the LIVE version sounds cinematic like a Disney movie soundtrack! And the lyric video is fantastic with the background of the game and sounds clearer for the instruments plus Adam, of course! Great reaction 😅 and can't wait for them to make their own video... to be continued

This song is playing in my head on a daily basis! If you want more Chance, I highly recommend “I Can’t Outrun You “- 5 part harmony, Chance lead, he directed the video, and it’s hauntingly beautiful. It really shows of his lower register. As far as his solo work, check out “ Far From Any Road “- it has a western feel, Chance plays electric and acoustic guitar, Adam Rupp provides percussion , as well as bass guitar . And there is female guest singer who really complements Chance’s voice.
I just saw them live on Nov 24, 2023. They sang this! Aaaand came out for an "encore" of their sea shanty medley. Adam's solo was amazing as always, and both he and Tim vibrated my soul. I just happened to check tour dates on the 23rd at 8pmEST. They had a free show ~300 miles away. 4+ hr drive at 6pmCST I scrambled to see if my mom could watch my 2 little kids and husband had to work, so I made the drive myself. I will definitely be investing in a seat cushion for my car, lmao. Totally worth it. I left around 11am est, got there around 4:30cst. They played at 6pm. I got home at 3am. 536 miles for the trip (had a few stops for gas and stuff).
side note Rob broke his toe a few yrs back now, I believe at that time he was still wearing cowboy boots still , so he needs foot comfort now. Rob is Classy enough that he can wear slippers and Look Fantastic. Thanks again DJ for this 2 for 1 special.

It seems there are several variations of this involving Home Free. 1) Ubisoft’s game promotion which features Home Free as the vocal background for Ubisoft’s visuals, perhaps lifted directly or in part from the game itself. 2) Home Free’s own video on their website, also quite a production visually, but much darker and featuring a heroine becoming the pirate leader. 3) A live performance, the first from the game roll out but there are probably a number of them since. Home Free’s own video more or less follows the game story line. The Bass Gang has a good version but it doesn’t have the strong storytelling elements of the other presentations and had no obligation to do so. But they did get into some character creation with their costumes.
DJ, Home Free are releasing the full music video for this song at 4am (a little under 3 hours from me typing this) I know you've already done the song but the video needs to be looked at too.
Not sure if you noticed this, but Adam Rupp is doing the "Skull And Bones" while doing the Beatbox too. Maybe someone else is covering the drum beat during that, but I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me if Rupp was doing it at the same time. Amazing.

Most of the guys are wearing boots, except for Rob. Adam Rupp wears them to help with his beat boxing/stamping (i think). Tim and Austin almost always wear boots, and I think Chance does the same. Rob almost always has some form of sneakers on!
The trailer makes me want to watch the game, and I'm no gamer! I'm eagerly waiting for the official live video. I've read that HF will add Skull And Bones to their play list starting with the Euro tour -- lucky ducks!
There are "bass range comparison" videos out there with both Tim and Chance...and they have almost identical ranges in the bass-baritone range. Haven't heard Chance's tenor+ material. Yet. :)
You mentioned Rob being the only one in sneakers/trainers. They consciously select footwear to equalize their heights. Rob's the tallest at 6'4" so he wears flats. "Only 6'2"!? tut, tut, you'll need to wear lifts!"
I've had that chorus stuck in my head since the song dropped! Not a complaint, just a fact. :D I like the recorded version best, but the live version is fantastic for showing who is singing which parts. This is they way to do it as you get to see who is doing which part I saw the lyrics video first and thought that only Tim was doing the bass parts at the start and didn’t realize that chance could do good bass work aswell
I don't think you would like to be in a pirate crew! There are modern pirates but like the ones in the 18th century, they were thieves and quite happy to murder honest sailors or leave them adrift without supplies. The life itself is hard in the extreme, and the penalty for piracy was death, probably still is. Disney has a lot to answer for! Like some others, I prefer the live. Chance swinging the guitar up to the mic for the chorus, Austin and Rob giving it 110% (you can't distinguish their voices in the recorded version because of multiple tracking). I just wish Adam had given us some surf sounds, as he did in the Sea Shanty Medley. Btw I owe an apology to another commenter, who remarked on the mandolin sound persisting after Austin has slung it behind him in the live. I said I couldn't hear it but have now listened twice in headphones and she was absolutely right.. They must have used some sort of looper, since there's no way that he could play the mandolin (which requires more attention than strumming a guitar) and sing the way he does in the chorus, at the same time. The mandolin itself was quite a surprise - we don't often even see Austin playing the guitar, mainly because he is surrounded by brilliant guitarists (Chance, Chatham, Tufano, Martinez).
I’m not exactly sure what it is, but that’s definitely not a guitar that Austin’s playing. I’m guessing it’s a mandolin, but there are several smaller stringed instruments that I’m less familiar with that it could be.
I love this song, and the game looks awesome. Home Free almost makes me want to play it. Sadly I don't have a whole lot of trust in Ubisoft, so I'll pass on the game and just listen to the song.
