As a Muslim Arab from Algeria ,I pretty much enjoyed the conversation from start to finish between two these great minds because I am big fan of both of them .I hope Mr Jordan Peterson invites sheikh Hamza again to cover more topics . my best greetings to both
This conversation between the two greats is so enlightening in many ways. It shows you how to be humble despite having a lot of knowledge ,how to listen without interrupting, how to find common grounds of agreement while discussing arguments .. at last it was so profound to see Jordan Peterson having a guest with visibly more spiritual development , knowledge of both religions ,as could be seen when Jordan Peterson was surprised by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf's book quotes ... Remarkable discussion... Hope we have more of such ..
I once almost lost my left eye, and the thought of it still gives me that uncomfortable feeling. Imagine how he feels every time he remembers it, or even dreams of it.
After studying psychology and becoming a mental health therapist, we are fortunate to live in a day and age where we can have discussions like this. If Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud were alive today they probably would be having discussions like this on RU-vid or, at the very least, be subjected to discussions like this.
I imagine that a very TRAUMATIC near death is markedly different than a so called "run of the mill" death. His trauma can not be separated from what it inspired in him after such an experience. If he read different things in perhaps even a different order he may have concluded differently. For example, if he were to have subsequently focused on LIFE and what religions had to say about life his conclusions and path may have been markedly different. Choices at a critical juncture are often accompanied with loving parents input; he did not have that additional benefit because of his tragic loss of loved one's. That alone can cause a search and thirst that is unquenchable. I am glad that he appears to have found peace.
We’re here to be conscious, and learned, as much as possible, and makes experiences, and be a knowledgeable person, and be prepared for the next journey of life, if you noticed my words and yourself is the same in general, but I explained more to giving you more scenes!
There should be a spiritual and physical proof for what would be substantially obtainable at transitioning into the next phase. Where are the proofs for this?
From the book … When the Air Hits Your Brain: Tales from Neurosurgery … author Frank T. Vertosick Jr., MD In humans, the “brainlike” behavior of the spinal cord can have macabre consequences. Patients with brains killed by gunshot wounds, hemorrhages, or other injuries can dupe family members, friends, even nurses, into believing that they are awake. An arm reaches up to grab a coat lapel, a hand grasps the hand of a loved one, a leg withdraws in apparent pain after a hospital tray is dropped on it-all pre-programmed spinal reflexes. Called “Lazarus movements” for obvious reasons, these reflexes make it difficult to convince a bereaved family that their loved one is, in fact, legally dead and should be removed from life support.
Dont worry about the twitter Sir. we still loves you. please be healthy. but about the model, truly Sir, i think she is beautifull. every people has different beauty standart. beauty is really sensitive issue especially for people working by selling their looks
but people really loves to over react. instead of thinking, Jordan peterson has different taste, or Big fatty girl is not Jordan taste, they choose to bully people with different point than them. well, thats not good, probably far worst.
JP likes to hear himself speak. He still has a lot to learn in life. JP asked the guest a question and then JP answered the question for the guest. Lesson here, allow people to speak and answer questions for themselves.
Why….oh why…… do none of the NDE stories ever describe at length what afterlife looks like!!!!! They always start to talk about it then stop with “God said its not your time”… cliche. For once I want someone to say in great detail what the enviorment looked like…
My limited interpretation of the core of his conversion: - I almost died, and it scared me so badly I desperately seeked comfort through knowledge. - Of all the religions that spoke on death and afterlife, Muslim religion gave me the niche answer I was looking for. - So now, I'm a Muslim. I mean good for him. People who discover God in its various ways do it through all kinds of methods, but this one just seemed like more a distraction than an awakening. I don't know this guy seems nice so maybe he's as genuine as he can be. Who am I to assume what I'm so poorly informed on?
Thought the same thing. Finding the most comforting answer does not seem to be a good methodology for truly answering such a perplexing question as the fundamental nature of the cosmos.
very weird comment it seems like you have a prejudice about him without even knowing. I mean its really weird considering that jordan literally asked about the experience that moved him to convert. so I don't really get the point of your comment actually.
It you watch the full discussion he explained that the NDE got him interested in knowing what is after death but it was through study that he found Islam to be true. It's theology is the most logical. The NDE wasn't the ultimate reason for his conversion, just made him realize life is temporary and he should prepare for the afterlife. So yes he did have an awakening do to the NDE and that lead him to study Islam and finally convert.
Near death hallucinations, are not real death. It is all in the "wording." Had Raymond coined the term “Near death hallucinations,” rather than “Near death experiences,” would he then have had a "following?" Raymond A. Moody, Jr. (born June 30, 1944) is a philosopher, psychologist, physician and author, most widely known for his books about life after death and near-death experiences (NDE), a term that he coined in 1975 in his best-selling book Life After Life. From Prime television, on the program "Science of Death," came the following words (verbatim). "Hours, even days, after the official death of their owner, stem cells, protected deep within the brain are still alive. Even after a week after death has been pronounced, they possess the power to heal disease in a living person."
Yes despite all the Science and explanations which we very well understand it's still an experience that cannot be "explained". There is definitely more to it than just what current science is able to explain. Hey we don't even know 90% of how and what of the brain. Wouldn't be surprised even after 1000 years we still wouldn't know.
@@itsourlife Do you believe that, there is something supernatural, such as the existence of a creator ... rather than believing that all things are simply natural?
@@itsourlife Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein, and other theorists, believed that the universe always existed ... no creator involved, and that suffering of all forms of life always was, and is, "natural." I also used to believe in the existence of a creator, but not any more.

After a scrape, leaving hospital post coma it was a struggle to be sure the outside world was real, still remember most of the hallucinations in detail even over 5 years later.
It is not hallucinations but a near death experience. Hallucinations are not real but we have evidence suggesting near death experience are very much real and can not be something fabricated.
I am so glad to see Sh. Hamza and Dr. Peterson have a conversation, both are my favourites from their respective fields. I had always wanted them to have a dialogue because they seem to be intellectual equals.
I had a NDE. I had experienced many things. I believe we are not allowed to recall them all. However do remember two : ONE We have no control of anything ,that's an illusion . Secondly, man has no true knowledge of God, it's greater than anything we could imagine. I still wonder why I came back. Now, I have to die again lol. We never die we leave our bodies.
Finally we got this long- awaited conversation. Hamza Yusuf is really a humble human being. Just look at the calmness he answers with and he never interrupts . In the whole conversation,I never found the two voices overlapping .
If you went to a dark place, as you say, it would seem like that would induce fear of dying. So what exactly was the lesson you learned? Is the change you refer to one of no fear of dying. Or is the change one of belief (perhaps in Jesus as the way to eternal life with God) that results in your no longer being scared? Please clairfy.
My dad always said in a very aggressive way "Hey! When I die it's a day of the Eid (Islamic festival), celebrate it as it is" I always thought it weird and how could anyone even say death is a celebration. But then the day came, and there was happiness all around in a sense he got all he dreamt of and passed away in most miraculous ways possible. Every moment leading upto his death and after there was a miracle of sorts. It was undeniable we ought to "celebrate" it. He left a very happy man and that actually made us all very happy. Off course I broke down days later with immense pain in the heart of him "passing away" which is definitely the natural thing to do but to this day I still "celebrate" his passing away. He was 100% ready for it.
If you think about going to a greater place it is like a celebration. Like going away party. We miss them though. That is really hard. I actually get comfort in knowing that I will get to follow them one day. One day we all get to go. Life here is ephemeral.
Sheikh Hamza Yusof was given guidance towards Islam as the chosen one by God just like Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam). Both experienced near death experience in their youths. These were their turning points in their lives. Alhamdulillah.
Satan masquerades as a being of light (which he was before his rebellion...thats where the name Lucifier comes from) therefore he is capable of counterfeiting the assurance of salvation that can only come from Jesus Christ. Islam is the antithesis of what Jesus proclaims.
I had a head on collision with a cow then a tree same reck and its slower then words can explain but i could not move only think and I'll say it i did not see my life flash but after i came to someone did speak to me and put his hand on my shoulder one i know the saddle wearing man was there i felt his touch i looked away for a few moments and he was gone there is much more to the testimony that brought me to my faith in Jesus Crist
Actually, this is what Hamza Yusuf says happened to him when he had a near death experience ... VERY different to the meaning of the words used to title this video ...
Preparing for our own death is so important, it is a disemboweling process otherwise; a series of struggles of letting go and bargaining and clutching to life. Very challenging.
Sheikh Hamza Yusuf is on another level in contrast to a lot of the muslim scholars. Abdal Hakim Murad and Umar Abdullah Farooq are also great intellectuals.
I am drowning in darkness and despair. He left me. Replaced me. My "best friend". The only friend I had. The ultimate betrayal. Complete abandonment. Rage and grief consume me and rape me.
*It's all in the mind/brain due to an innate coping mechanism based on ones Cognition, Perception and Emotions, per se. He et al. were NOT dead. Huge difference. All NDE's are chemical reactions of psychological wishful and blissful thinking at best. 🧠*
I think it's interesting that NDEs Are so similar but have some differences. Some see Jesus or Buddha. Some don't see it but hear it. In light or complete blackness. The bright light the tunnel etc. It's almost like here on earth. Part of us is the human deciding what they want to do in life. College, tech school, what type of work. The other part is stuff that you have no control over. What happens to you. Maybe when we die we still have our own impression of what it would be. Half us and half of something else.
In other words, the brain hallucinates like crazy and people draw extraordinary conclusions about an afterlife from that because thats what people want to believe...
I'm sure many are NOT ready to die. Still, God is there to catch us. To embrace us. The Faithful are never lost to the process or purpose of His timing. And yet, we say, "How can that be for those we leave behind."
I got hit by a BUS and its wheels rode over my toes, i fell down, with nothing broken, my arms, legs and toes where all intact, tho my body was in shock for a minute, all i said on my walk back home was "Oh wauw" and a lot of cussing. 1 more step and i was dead for sure. So the feeling is quite... weird, its like you stop fearing death for a while, and nothing seems dangerous anymore, and you become very, relaxed in a way. However, it did not bring me any closer to a higher being, nor did it have any value after the fact on that sense, for me.
Life is absolutely a Classroom. And we each are given our Homework. Consequently, PAIN has a way to birth our greatest Lessons & Gifts. The kind that the World can NEVER take away. Eternal Gifts that Glorify God. All Traumas & NDEs seem to have this potential. I say this with humility & awe.
For a while after being saved from drowning, i really questioned whether i was actually alive or just wandering through the process toward whatever after world that presented itself. That really hasn't subsided fully, but i was able to kind of reintegrate back... but not really. Idk. It's really hard to explain.
@@abdirahmaansaid4013 I've picked through it thus far, it's on the list but without understanding the language it's been rather difficult to find the wisdom in the tidbits.

0:50 - Describing a near death experience. 2:10 - Jeff bridges. The man that survived a plane crash 3:35 - Time slowing down 7:10 - Religion and fear of death
Peterson's insight seems the most probable. It makes a lot of sense; that in extreme danger, the body would go into overdrive to scour the mind for any solution to survive, i.e. remembering your whole life, etc. This guy, focusing on death so much, seems to have missed the whole point of his NDE. Sounds like he's waiting to die or something.
What are you even saying. The 'whole point' of NDE is your existential outlook on life after the event. What good will scientific explanation do after you already survived. You either didn't hear the convo, to dumb to understand or just another JP yes-man, probably all.
According to Einstein’s theory of special relativity, time slows down the faster you move through space. If you move at the speed of light, time appears to stop. The reason for this is the speed of light is a universal constant. I think the reason time seems to slow down to us when we are in moments of intense stress or engaged in a highly stimulating activity is because our consciousness is, in a sense, moving faster through space than the rear of our body and the matte around us. The force that animates everything in the universe is energy. Everything, including matter, is made up of energy. Matter is essentially condensed forms of energy. Our bodies are made up of all kinds of matter in many different forms containing high amounts of energy animating all kinds of different biological processes including our consciousness. Our consciousness is the complex way in which our bodies, which are made up of condensed energy, interact with the energy around us. Our sight perceives electromagnetic energy of a specific wavelength, which is light. It is the sense we rely on the most and is the most sophisticated. When we die, our animating energy, or soul, is released into the universe, moving at the speed of light, and time no longer exists. I think that’s what heaven is. The state of being in which time, aging, and suffering stop. Everything is a universe constant, in perfect balance with one another. When we experience those moments of intense consciousness, or flow, our consciousness is, in a sense, momentarily breaking free from our condensed bodily forms and interacting more rapidly with the universe around us. Time slows down. Time is our conscious perception of the universe around us. But our conscious perception of time is relative. The speed and expansion of our consciousness affects time.
Jordan I’m not religious but this is Definitely an area you should explore, scientifically, psychologically, spiritually, sociologically, this type of video, gives people hope. For tens of thousands of years humans have believed in something, having a background in anthropology, there is virtually no humans who in the history of of species have not believed, we now live in time new to human history in tens of thousands of years in which more than 50% of the western population do not believe in a higher power, that immediate breakdown in the species psychology can only have detrimental effects and propagate nihilism to its inevitable effects.
One shouldnt prepare but live in tge present to me prepare means to fear. Its a way of life. Love and have faith this Earth is merely a test if faith and Love nothing more.
No matter what _actually_ happens after death, *only experience is experienced* So even if you (the consciousness that's reading this right now) ceases to exist (stops being done by the brain), then just like non-existence before birth was followed by a consciousness due to the birth of a brain that then started doing a consciousness ("you"), then it follows that death (non-existence) will also be followed by a consciousness due to consciousness being done by other brains (around the world, and perhaps elsewhere in the universe). Non-existence will always be followed by an experience, because only experience is experienced. You don't experience your own non-existence. There are only the consciousnesses that _are_ occurring. So if we don't have souls, or any of the other stuff that'd allow for "personal subjective continuity", then there will be what philosopher, Tom Clark calls "generic subjective continuity". (What I explained above). Sam Harris did a podcast on this, that podcast episode is called "The Paradox Of Death". Annaka Harris has an audio series on consciousness coming out soon where she interviewed Clark. So no matter what actually happens after death - it can only be followed by an experience, because only experience is experienced. Read Clark's essay "Death, Nothingness and Subjectivity ".

I don’t really buy it. If this life is just a damn “preparation” for what’s next, just IMAGINE how horrible that will be. Also there can never be a “perfect heaven.” Everyone imagines heaven to be perfect where everyone is always happy 24/7. How can you have happiness without suffering? There can be no happiness without sadness.
This is not really an NDE, at least not in the way most people think of NDEs, but still an interesting conversation. And most people who have had NDEs and understand the religions of the world would say the Buddhism and Hinduism most close resemble what their experience was.

He's bullshiting. He didn't really have a near death experience. I've heard hundreds of testimonies of NDEs and his version lacks the passion and sincerity of those who REALLY have an NDE. His story smacks of fabrication. There's NO spiritual element to it at all.
I’m not going to minimize this persons experience. However, he clearly has an agenda as far as his religion goes. I guess most religions don’t care how you get to them, though the threat of death is (in my mind) the cheapest route. It was mortal fear that drove you into your religion, not introspection. Harrowing experiences aren’t necessarily flashes in time as in this cases. Consistent dread is far more painful/disabling than any car accident or gunshot wound and much more consistent with truth. You HAVE to evaluate your life and think about your pain over months or years even.
He could just be lying. He has had many years to embellish his experience. Religious types do ‘run with the ball’. Many of his facts are simply made up in his own mind.
How can you possibly have enough facts about this man’s state of mind to know that the conclusions he reached were not the result of introspection. Also, without an unmoved mover, the universe cannot be proven to exist.
Maybe because he read the Quran and you didn’t? Look up this verse: (56:83) *Why, then, when the soul leaps up to the throat, (56:84) the while you are helplessly watching that he is on the verge of death, (56:85) - at that moment when We are closer to him than you, although you do not see (Us) (56:86) if you are not subject to anyone's authority, (56:87) why are you then not able to bring them back to life if you are truthful*
