What if you use the strands in the core of the paracord and braid that?
@The_Mr._Biscuit
@The_Mr._Biscuit 3 года назад
This was my question. What if you just used the Paracord core as a source of nylon? Because the stretch in Paracord comes from the woven sheathing combined with not-particularly-tightly-twisted core material.

The core strands are very slippery. I've tried using them for other projects and I found them difficult to work with. Doesn't mean it won't work; could just mean I lack the skill to use it.

When I was 11 I made my a bow that was just a straight springy stick and the string was a 3 piece braid of waxed floss. I shot it a ton over the summer and eventually the bow gave out but the floss didn't. I would like to see how well floss performs when a professional makes a string from it.

@draygontaygen677 3 года назад
It's worth a try, some silk is pretty strong.
@almubarizunarchery4607
@almubarizunarchery4607 2 года назад
You could do that, problem is, you need really good premium silk. Most silk is weaker than other natural string materials like linen. So to make a more stable bow string, you need more material, which means more weight, which means less performance. Im sure the Mongolians knew what they were doing and had the best silk possible, but im not sure it would be cost effective now. Thats just my take though.

I know from personal experience that the braided fishing line works great. I had to make a new bow string for my 65lb Mongolian Horse bow. They don't carry those strings on the shelf. I used higher weight fishing line and discovered that I had to use thicker serving string. I also noticed that when shooting the bow is quieter. I made my string during the supply issues after covid. The fishing line was on the shelf at Bass Pro Shops.

Couple weeks late but the difference is real paracord is nylon. Nylon stretches quite a bit. It also comes in polyester which has almost no stretch. Nylon is better in almost every way except for price and if you want it to not stretch. The box store stuff is often polyester.

Great Video! I did the same test with an endless loop string made of Dyneema fishing line and Fast Flight Plus. Both bowstring were equal in weight and the results came out quite the same. More stretch in fishing line and around 15 fps slower. BUT braided Dyneema fishing line makes great serving! It's like Halo serving but much cheaper and lasts the same. And it comes in serveral diameters, which makes proper nock fit easy.

I had an idea for a "Will it Bow" episode. What if you took a bunch of plastic bottles and then melted them down. After melting them put the molten plastic into a mold and let it cool. Cut and Sand the plastic then glue to some type of hard wood to make a bow. I thought it would be cool to see if this idea works because you could add all kinds of cool designs into the molten plastic with different colors. Also if you wanted to you could add some small led lights into the mold before pouring the plastic into it for bow fishing or if you stay out to late and don't have a flashlight. Would have to implement a battery pack with a button or switch into the handle piece of the bow for that idea to work. Hope you like this idea, please let me know!

I had a plastic bow from aliexpress with a material „p66“, all molten. It‘s very flexible but has barely any power, too little compression power. I would expect similar results for pur PET. But it could be laminated with something harder-it‘s just difficult to find a powerful glue for PET. Epoxy might have a chance. I thought for the compressionlayer to use crushed ceramic powder in epoxy

I use upolstery thread to make continuous loop strings. I treat the loom as a race track n do ONE FULL LAP for every pound of draw weight. One 1500 yard spool can get me 5-8 strings (depending on if mishaps happen) for my 56 inch 40 pound recurve. Plus the 1500 yard spool only cost less than $10 for two depending on where you get it from.

'm gonna guess bow string works best, to include braided Dacron, Dynema, and other "super braid" "fishing line" of course, which are already used for bow strings, anyway. No difference in the Dacron or Dynema used for bow trings or fishing lines. Nylon Monofiliment fishing line would stretch too much. Parcord is a bit large in diameter for modern bows

I've made a Flemish Twist bow string from the internal strands of paracord. They are still nylon, so it is still more stretchy, thus slower than my proper Dacron string. It would work fairly well in a pinch, but not really worth it, even in a survival situation you're better off spending the energy on proper shelter, warmth and foraging etc.

First off, I just received my first Shatterproof bow strings. I haven't shot an arrow from either yet, but they look amazing! This weekend I am building a PVC pipe bow with my 6yo nephew and I will put your string through its paces (two separate events, he's not getting his little hands on my brand new bow string). In any case! I don't think the comparison with paracord is fair because the other two are specifically made to not stretch under tension, where paracord is not. I think the real question is: can you make a functional bow string from a length of paracord? Instead of: does a length of paracord, fresh off the spool, work as a functional string? I would suggest using the mill spec stuff (maybe you already are). Just because for once mill spec is actually much better than the regular variety. Just ditch the mantle (sheath or whatever that's called in English) and use the strands inside: Use a three strand braid on the paracord strands (the fishing line comes braided and as such has a considerable head start) and then you make a 16 or 20 strand bowstring out of those three strand braids (still with me here?), that's when I think the comparison starts to be fair. You still need less feet with the paracord version vs the fishing line from a "initial feet off the spool" perspective and though it is a lot more work, it still represents a cheap option people can do at home. Also, how would a string (choose your poison) behave if you braid the entire bow string, rather than twisting it? So many questions! So little time to make videos! ;-)

I've made bow strings (Flemish and endless) from just about every type of thin thread, just to see how they work, and found the following. Anything nylon is a waste of time for anything other than the very lightest of bows, it stretches too much, this includes mono fishing line which is also stiff. Linen is really good if you can get it! Cotton not very strong. See what Kramer says about braided but I do use it for finger serving.

I am going to try 3mm OD, 12 strand braided D97 (sailing) rope on my crossbow (as it has high strength & excellent wear characteristics, not an issue with bows). But the spliced nock loop method means there is no need for wrapping or a centre (I'm British so no 'center' here!) serving. It's supposedly lighter than a normal xbow string. Would that work on a normal bow?!

That is honestly really surprising. I bet with a higher pound test fishing line you could get faster results. I know some of the 80 and 100# stuff I have is ridiculously strong!

Comment added for the drawing. Love the idea of testing handy materials for the bowstring, I'm mulling over ideas on an afternoon with my 7 year old grandson and how he and I can together make a "kids" bow and make a few arrows from stuff I already have, or reliably find on the shelf in any hardware store, and be ready to try it out the same afternoon. It has to be a really low draw weight for the little one, AND flu flu type short range arrows, injury reducing tips, I don't want him to be able to accidentally put one through the neighbor's window. Kramer any ideas? perhaps make a video about this?

I got a bunch of braided spider wire 100% spectra fishing line out of a clearance bin for cheap and I've used that for bow strings for a long time. The spider wire has very little stretch and has increased my arrow speeds significantly. When I run out of this stuff I'll start getting d97 for my bows.

How about using a thicker braided fishing line? You can get variations that should deal with 300lb for example.

I think the only significant difference betwean the fishing line and the bowstring material is that fishing line is typicaly coated with teflon or something similar. If you think about it a fishingline and a bowstring have some very similar requirements so you would expect them to be made from the same type of material.

I found this video searching for something I maybe had laying around at home, or that I could pick up at the local wal-mart to use as bowstring material for some hollow limb kid's bows I'm making for my grandkids. Obviously I want something safe and cheap (they're going to be HARD on these bows, I'm sure...being aged 3 to 6)...but real performance would be nice. I can't say I'm any closer to finding what I'm looking for, but I enjoy your videos anyway so no loss here, lol. Thanks for doing the test and sharing your results!

So...2wks of research and I've found that there's a billion kinds of fishing line that you could have used. The general consensus seems to be that Power Pro is the best. I'm curious what would have happened had you used the name brand in a similar strength (say 80lb test), vs an off brand 40lb line. Oh, they make it in camo too lol. Pretty cool.

Paracords are designed to strech to deal with the opning shock of the parachute. There is zero strech paracord mead to eliminate the need to retrim break lines on parachutes, but they brack often on opnings or cause tension nuts. Might be usfuly as bow string.

So the 550… would it be better if you gutted the string and twisted the strands inside the sheathing? Certainly they wouldn’t stretch as far and be faster. Don’t you think it’s worth a short video?

Great stuff, and may I say, thank you for not trying to be Crocodile Dundee in your video. Anyway could you try and pre stretch the paracord? You sort of did that I guess. But also, would a thicker p.cord stretch less? Or is that impossible to shoot? And how about nylon thread, 1mm, if braided bcoz that is cheap.

Can one use fishing line for serving then? I found the bow fishing plug at the end just the kind of humor, that after a long Work day I needed. Thankyou again.

Yes braided fishing line works great for serving, some people even use monofilament but that wears quickly. The braided stuff is a lot like BCY Halo, which is also 100% braided Spectra.

Why didn't you remove the sleeve from the para cord and make a bow string as was done with the fishing line? I believe there is a stronger para cord out now as well. I'll check.

On the paracord take out the center strings and discard the outer layer. It will work better

Right at the beginning I was thinking "you need to be trying braid, not mono or fluoro," but you were def ahead of me. I'm impressed the 9# braid somewhat paralleled d97 - I thought it would be too light. I wonder if a higher weight braid would end up matching the d97 in every category - would make sense if actually same material. Also, your approach did, in fact, have a decent scientific approach to it - kudos!

Lots of people use Power Pro or Spiderwire braid for their strings. The general consensus from what I've seen is 60-80lb test is the best choice. Cool thing is it IS less expensive in general...mostly because it goes on sale a lot more often at places like Wal Mart (every season), plus...well, you can get it any day of the week in tons of colors at places like Wal Mart lol.
