I adopted a 17 yr old a few years ago after his family dumped him at a shelter. We had 5 1/2 wonderful years together. It was heartbreaking to lose him, but I’ve never regretted it for a moment.
In my case, i had to leave my cats behind because of a genocide that was happening to my community. I could only take one extra shirt & pant. Me and my family had to leave behind everything we ever owned, including our house. Not a day goes by when I dont think about my cats. But I cannot go back there cause that would mean death for me. So sometimes there are really hard reasons why people have to leave their pets behind.
its so sad that people will keep a pet for ages and then abandon them when they get to an older age. In my opinion, as soon as you bring a new pet home, they're a member of the family and they're here to stay. Thank you for giving this old boy a new home.
Some may have financial issues or in my case going homeless, I had to give up custody of my 8-11yr maincoon, 13 yr tabby cat. My 18-20 yr old maincoon, 5 days before it became a year later he died in my old home with my extended family. I have yet to get his ashes. As for the other two they have found homes, baby the #2 maincoon was rehomed with my cousin and ive never found out where my tabby is. People who purposely abandon older cats must have a reason or couldn't take care of it anymore.
@@impishrebel5969possibly because if they were a missing cat, they would have been found on the streets and usually when owners pass the animal isnt being left abandoned.
I adopted two 3-yr old cats 🐈 🐈 that were taken from a homeless shelter. Sometimes their parents can't afford to keep them, and they give up their babies to better lives through the shelters.
@@impishrebel5969yeah I know many older people who sadly passed away but since they had so many cats no one wanted to take all of them so they had to give them up. It really is sad
Your so sweet! Not many people adopt cats that are old and have problems or just genuinely don't adopt them he really opened up to u and even asked for belly rubs which means we feels safe with u!
we adopted a cat that was 18 and he is the sweetest thing ever! his previous owner had dementia and was put in a carehome. unfortunately during a storm the house flooded and he was forced to climb through water for months. now he is living his best life with us and im so glad to see amazing people like you adopting older cats so they dont spend there last years alone in a shelter. thank you for doing gods work! ❤
Wow. I'm so glad you did that. I adopted an adult cat, but she was 1 or 2. I always say the next one will be elderly, because I don't want her/him to outlive me.
@@user-ov4wr5yu4rin my experience, elderly cats are always the sweetest. we have two cats, one is elderly and the other we raised from a kitten. the kitten is always getting told off by the elderly cat. you should definitely consider adopting an older cat though, they are so kind
My own baby kitty was abandoned by his last owner. I’m not sure how long he was there but the separation anxiety really showed how much trauma he had. First few days he barely slept. He would wake up at every tiny noise he heard. He was okay with pets but only here and there. As the months went on, he is full of trust and love. He still has separation anxiety out of fear I’ll leave him but with love from my mum, dad and brother, he has a loving family to help him heal the old wounds. He’s 2 now and it’s been 8 months of his new life. Seeing him everyday makes me smile. I have such a soft spot now for abandoned older cats and I only ever want to adopt abandoned cats in the future. Older cats have so much love in their little hearts.
I think you missed the part where she had to coax the cat out of hiding with shoelaces and treats for however long it took. She trained the cat not the other way around.
I am a big advocate for older cats to not be over looked for adoption, they make beautiful companions. Old kitties need to be loved too, make their golden years special!
cats that have had rough or are older are often easier than cat's you've had from a kitten and have had a perfect life all their life. they give you more of 'respect', run less on your face etc.
I think the reason is because we're worried they won't last long and get heartbroken. Yes it's in the best interest of the kitty but it's always so sad 😞
for real! plus they're great for older people or just people who want a more chill cat, because most old cats just want to lounge around pretty much all day. my family got two 10 year old cats (who lived all the way until 19!) and they were so lovely
Those biscuits are the best sign! It means he’s regressing back to kittenhood, when he would knead his mother for milk, and it’s pretty much always a positive thing. You’re doing a great job!
as former shelter worker: it can take weeks before a traumatized cat opens up to their new environment. you cat was already socialized, not in any pain and had the perfect owners. I'm very glad this adoption worked out this well! 💜
Yeah, I adopted a little one eyed girl cat from the shelter 6 months ago. She looked so dainty but was terrified. Tried to claw me up when I interacted with her and spent practically the whole first month under my bed. But with a lot of patience and love, she now follows me around and likes to come lay down next to me. She is my little princess and I would do anything for her.❤
@@TerranGuy93 that is a beautiful story, I'm glad you shared it. it must be such a relief for your disabled cat to have a safe and loving home. you've done a great job!
@@solala1312, I'm blessed every day by her presence. She is such a loving shy baby and only got more vocal in the last weak with the softest meows for treats and attention. I really feel a purpose in life now that she is here. As she and my orange boi ages, once they pass, I want to provide a home for older cats to live out their lives in peace & comfort.
I am relieved that there are people like you put there who adopt old cats. I could never. My cat that lived with me my entire life just died two weeks and my world broke, I could never let a cat go so quickly again. Thank you for being responsible
@@ThePrufessa when they paw at something (usually a blanket or sometimes your thigh) like they’re kneading dough and purr. they do this when they feel happy, safe or cuddly. my cat does it on my mom’s bed where she would sleep when she was a kitten and remembers my moms scent
i volunteer at a cat shelter and its so heartbreaking to see all the young kitten get adopted and people dont even look at the older cats. theyre so gentle and sweet. every time im there, the warm up to me and sit on my lap, whih is smt younger cats dont do since theyre so full of energy. if ur more of the laid back person with not much time, i would totally recommend getting an older cat bc theyre just so chill and they just like pets, not exercise like younger cats.
Rescue is always the way to go. It's risky, sure, but the love you'll get back will be worth it. We rescued a cat who was abandoned as well, and she used to lay in bed with us and stare into the mirror by the bed for weeks after we first adopted her, like she couldn't believe she had a real family. She has been so grateful for us and us for her.
It's so heartbreaking because you can tell Bepo is loving. I don't get why people abandon their pets... you're supposed to love them unconditionally, because they will never know what they've done wrong if you abuse or abandon them.
People have differing level of how much they care their pets. I got someone told me I should abandon my cat and use the money to take vacation instead >.> . In a more positive look on humanity, the prev owner could have difficulty with the vet bills or move to a place that doesn't allow pets.
#1 reason I know of that cats are abandoned is the owner had no choice but to move and could not find a new place they could afford that would allow a cat. Why they don't take them to a shelter if they are unsuccessful in finding a new home, I don't know, but maybe in some areas people think the cat has a better chance finding a new home on it's own than at the shelter.
@@RoseDragoness if you have a pet and you move to a place that doesnt allow pets, you are a scum human being lol if you have a pet and you are not a heartless bastard, you look for a petfriendly place.
@@shieldmaidenforchrist1310 i honestly dont understand how anyone can possibly defend anyone who leaves an innocent, caring, lovely pet behind. why on earth would you find exuses for horrible human beings?
My family's cat recently passed away due to a terminal, congenital heart disease where the walls of his heart thickened to the point there was almost no pumping volume. He was also an older cat when we adopted him, though the shelter lied about his age. We thought he was around 3 or 4 years. The vet who looked at him on his last hour estimated at least 7 or 8 based on the X-Ray, though his heart suggested he could be even older. While he was already affectionate - opening up to us within a week after adoption - he became more so over his last month, wishing to stay with us as often as possible. In a sense, I guess he knew he was on his last leg and wished to spend as much of it as us before he suddenly collapsed. We only had him for a little over a year, but it felt like a lifetime. In a sense, I suppose it was. The worst part of losing a pet is the sheer silence that follows. When we keep expecting that loving fluffball to greet us at the door or come running towards us when they hear us... Only wispy ghosts from our memories are what's left. So please cherish every moment you have with Bepo. You don't know how much time he has, so make every day with him his best.
I just wanted to let you know that I made it home. Everything is so pretty here So white, so fresh, so new. I wish that you could close your eyes So you could see it too. Please try not to be sad for me Try to understand God is taking care of me I'm in the shelter of His hands Here there is no sadness And no sorrow and no pain Here there is no crying And I'll never hurt again Here it is so peaceful When all the angels sing I've really got to go for now I've just got to try my wings PS...I'll be the first face you see when you get here! 😸
They probably didn't intentionally lie; I think unless they have reason to know, or a cat is obviously older, that's their standard answer. We had a similar outcome with a younger cat which we adopted as a kitten. Pixel was about a year and a half old when we lost him to congestive heart failure. He slept nearly every night at the foot of my 8 year old's bed. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
I was looking at a shelter web site and there were these 2 saved kittens who were siblings and they were found in an abandoned hotel together. Thankfully they were saved and looking for a new home together!!
Thank you for bringing that sweet boy home to his forever home! What a lovely boy. Just wait, this'll be one of the best things you've ever done 😊🐈⬛❣️🐾❣️
It always breaks my heart to hear about people abandoning their pets. Imagine if your family just got up one day and left you for seemingly no reason at all. I know people might have their reasons but these are members of your family.
@@UnderTheTableGremlintbh not all countries have shelters. where i live, there arent any animal shelters so the best thing we could do is to find someone who might take care of the cat. otherwise, there's no option than to abandon them.
“Imagine waking up one day and your family just left you” Yeah, I don’t have to imagine. I had a cat that did that to me. 2 years of steady food, water, shelter, he used to sit in my lap at night after work. and one day he just up and left for no reason. He started hiding from me the last week he was there, and one day when I got home he had _squeezed_ his way out a slightly cracked window in the back. I found him dead outside in some bushes far away from where I lived after a few weeks of searching. Why? Why would you do that? Anyway, never again. Cats are use-and-losers, they’re not a loyal pet
Fun fact : if a cat blinks infront of you, it means they trust you and they are comfortable, meanwhile if a cat closes its eye for a few seconds infront of you. They are smilling ❤
I rescued an 11 year old cat and she hid under the bed for a week. I had her until she was 17 and she never wanted to leave my side. Including when she threw up at 3 am and when I would cry. She was the sweetest cat I ever had.
i adopted an adult cat that was surrendered by previous owners. he was terrified of being in the shelter, especially since they tried to trim his claws right away and he ended up biting a volunteer. he got comfortable pretty quickly to be honest, insisting on using me as a seat whenever he could get the chance. its been a year now, and every day is just a bit brighter thanks to him
I adopted a pair of brothers who were abandoned to the shelter. They were there only a week and do sad. They just sat by each other and didnt play with anyone. Ive had them almost 2 year now and they sleep on me at night and one of them them loves when i hold him like a baby
They needed your love so much. Imagine being left by a family you've always lived with and loved or your family passing away and you end up in a shelter, older kitties and Senior kitties definitely need love too❤
Hes making biscuits!! You’re doing great, he seems very happy in his new home and him making biscuits shows how he thinks of you, or your scent, as comforting and it brings cats kneading instincts back. Another good sign is him showing his belly! Cats usually go for each others stomachs when fighting as its where almost all the major organs are, so much so they’ve adapted to have a primordial pouch which protects them. A cat rolling over and allowing you to pet their stomach means that they feel safe around you and trust you, i hope Bepo has a great life, thank you for adopting from a shelter! God bless you ☺️
He looks really comfortable in your home. You guys are definitely going to be best friends. Thank you for adopting an older cat because not many people do 🙏❤️
We have always adopted rescues, my 17 year old cat was born a stray in a windowell and I still have him, my newest cat was given up and I happened to be in connection to be able to provide a loving stable home, she has needed lots of medical care and have spent a pretty penny getting her healthy, I'm so glad that more people these days are taking rescues, it's so sad to see them be lonely and feeling unloved
My parents adopted two kittens a few years ago. They also adopted the kittens' mom, an older cat who hid away a lot when they brought her home. She only came out to eat and wouldn't let anyone touch her. Very slowly, she warmed up to everyone and though she's still kinda feral and skittish, she is much more social and will allow people pet her on rare occasion.
I just lo-o-o-ove Bepo. What a beautiful cat and, yes, he seems to be becoming quite comfortable with you. Bravo! Enjoy! The two of you are in for some sweet times.
His first owners didn't deserve him.. he is gorgeous and his beautiful eyes just absolutely melt my heart.. he seems so affectionate and loving I'm sure you really will be best friends ❤
You don't know their story. They might have become seriously ill or had money problems or even passed away. Whatever the reason, giving a pet to a shelter is a selfless thing to do, compared to just abandoning them or keeping them in a situation where they are being neglected. Not saying that there aren't assholes out there who treat animals like disposable toys, but those people don't often take the care to make sure the animal is looked after. We mustn't judge and stigmatise giving up a pet for adoption. It's not an easy decision for most people and it's better that the animals needs are put first. What we should try to prevent is irresponsible breeding, selling pets in shops and treating animals as fashionable possessions.
My kitty is about 9-10, I went to a max capacity shelter and asked them for their least adoptable cat, and they showed me my little skrunkly old man. He was shaved all choppy and he had a lot of scarring from emergency surgery, he’s got a lot of medical problems and a lifelong disease. I named him Biggie, full name Little Big Man. He is my everything. I live alone far away from family and I spend every free moment I have with him. He follows me everywhere, even when he’s cranky with me for giving him his meds. I’m autistic and I frequently have meltdowns, and even at my worst, he never runs/hisses/scratches/bites. He’s practically my little therapist. He was neglected severely and was in a hoarders trailer for what I assume is all his life, and the shelter told me they didn’t even need to trap him, he just let them pick him up and carry him along. Im glad adopting elderly cats is becoming a ‘trend’ now, they deserve the love.
He looks exactly like our sweet lady Jess, left behind on a shelter when she was already 9 years old. We adopted heron 2021 and she’s absolutely adorable!
Awww... he's gorgeous. When we moved to a new city I quickly found out there was a ginger, long haired "neighborhood" stray that was getting fed but no one wanted to take full responsibility for. I found him sleeping on an old couch we had on our 3 season porch after a pretty nasty fall thunder storm all wet, dirty, and just sad looking and immediately scooped him up. He was quarantined in the basement bathroom at first for many reasons, but he was happy enough on a bed of towels I put on the floor to take advantage of the radiant heating system. I'll never forget the looks of utter betrayal I got throughout a lengthy vet visit the next day. And nothing could have prepared me for the gorgeous and incredibly soft double coat that was hiding under all that muck. I named him Simba and he's currently taking up 3/4 of the queen size bed, completely oblivious to everything else. I may have rescued him from living outside 5 1/2 years ago, but he has since literally saved my life.
He's beautiful! It's so great you approach him carefully but playfully, showing him you want to be best buddies! I hate the people who abandoned this little buddy, he seems so cute and gentle. An animal has feelings, if you take one in, it's for LIFE.
Reminds me of a cat that i miss very much! I think you will develop a great relationship with this one! You are incredibly lucky to have found such a friend!
Bepo deserves a dignified life and treatment. Please regard him as the precious being that he is. Never abandon him. We all have things to do in life, projects, etc. But these littlr3 angels deserve our care and love all the way. No intermissions. Full commitment. All the way.
My cat is 17 years old and we’ve had her her whole life. One thing about owning an older cat is they’re very smart and wise and definitely aren’t easy to trick. Treat them as you’d treat a friend or brother, understand their emotions, as they’re just as human as you. My cat understands me, whether it’s vocal words or something deeper. And I understand her. Owning a cat is truly a bond unlike anything.
Seniors are the best. I rescued a beautiful Calico at 7 1/2 (considered a senior but what did I know) she died 2 years later from vaccine-related Cancer. Not my vet but the prior owner's. She was neglected & overweight and sad. They said she was trouble but I know they didn't want her because they had a toddler & we all know how harsh toddlers can be on Cats that don't like their tails pulled.(what Cat does?) She never gave me a hard day in her life. I miss her with every breath I take its painful. She loved me like no human ever did. She was the best. Up in Heaven waiting for me to join her someday. 😭💔
