What Afghanistan Was Like Under The Last King | Zahir Shah Documentary

The recent history of Afghanistan has been filled with war and conflict. As a result, many Afghans look to the reign of the last King, Zahir Shah with a sense of nostalgia for a time and place that was once peaceful and stable. From his accession to power in 1933 until his deposition in 1973, the country went through a range of social, economic and political changes. King Zahir Shah’s reign saw Afghanistan embrace modernisation, in a bid to meet the challenges of surviving in a modern world. The modernising drive of the royal family certainly succeeded in improving the Afghan economy and enhancing the state’s capacity; but its policies and initiatives also unleashed a wave of effects which would ultimately play a part in the monarchy’s downfall.

You have to understand warfare has been a part of Afghanistan’s history for millennia. It’s called the Graveyard of Empires for a reason. If the monarchy didn’t survive, I’d imagine that the Taliban won’t last forever either. And keep in mind, the king was overthrown by his own cousin, who could’ve made himself king , but he instead dispensed with all royal titles and made himself president instead.

It didn't happen because of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who was the main figure who hated Zahir. Just imagine if Zahir did come back after Soviets it would've likely led to an end of war and restoration of monarchy, back to stability. This happened again in 2001. All the tribes agreed that the King was a good alternative because he was democratic and I believe not formally from any tribe or involved in the dark politics of recent times. The @#£%ing U.S. lost a perfect opportunity to have a legitimate, democratic government in Afghanistan, you can hardly claim the King of Afghanistan is a U.S. puppet. I hate this timeline so much!

@@Music-do4hm Man it is a moronic place even in history and even today. Pashtuns are the most racist people and harshest people that anyone could ever interact wid. They just want and like to fight instead of building. Even during the time of great Mughals instead of working wid the government and improving infrastructure they preferred to fight against the governments and rebelled against them as well. It’s just people out there should stop being on extreme sides and stick to middle path a balanced path.

A problem particularly in the muslim world is the lack of secularism. Religion should have no bearing on the running of the state. But if one were to impose this on Afghanistan it would be presumptuous and take their right to self determination. The simple fact is the Afghan people do indeed support the Taliban and denying this is to deny the will of the Afghan people. I'd say do nation building starting with secular schooling, give them the means to create the nation they deserve and choose.

the problem was the destabilising west. not modernisation. Durand line created division. A clear pashtun majoirty would create less violence from Majority. Dividing pashtuns was wrong. Blocking access to Arabian sea by durand line created issues too. Britain supported Habibullah Kalakani the Tajik bandit to force amanullah into exile. America supported Taliban. West supports extremism in the region. Pakistan was created to further destabilise the region.

Listening to this I couldn’t stop thinking of similar situations, how they played out in Africa, most of Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Amanullah was interested in faster progress, independent foreign policy and serious social, cultural and political reforms. He was one of the three imprtan reformers in the region ( Ataturk and Reza Shah being the other two.) Habibull was opposed to all this and preferred a slow, stable moves. He was also extremely interested in pleasure and womanising. Add to all this Amanullah's mother who wanted his son on the thrown. So, it is safe to say that Habibull's death was somehow connected to Amanullah and his vision and ideas, if not directly ordered by him.

From what I gathered in this video. Pakistan would strongly object to that idea. But also remember Iran overtheir their monarchy a few years later. What the video actually suggested in a way is that Pakistan kinda showed the way to these other countries that you don't need a monarch. Today as far as I know the only ones left in the region are over near the Arabian peninsula.
