Imagine a city where everything you need is just a short distance away. What many would consider ideal, right-wingers are calling ’tyrannical’ - here’s why.

What are 15 minute cities? The 15-minute city envisions a community where essential amenities are within a short walk or bike ride. This envision has been embraced by 16 cities worldwide with the city of Paris becoming a pioneer in this movement. The city has went on to implement over 600 miles of protected bike lanes and green spaces to foster sustainability and combat traffic congestion.
Inspired by the 15-minute city plan in Paris, Cleveland's mayor is pacing towards a plan to reshape the city, emphasizing healthier and more connected living spaces. Despite the positive impacts observed globally, not everyone supports this vision. Influential figures like Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson, particularly in conservative circles, criticize the idea as tyrannical.
Contrary to the opposition's views, the 15-minute city model is about empowerment rather than constraint. It seeks to create communities where accessibility flourishes, local economies thrive, and people enjoy easy access to necessities without lengthy commutes or large carbon footprints.
The concept isn't entirely new, as cities like Paris, Venice, and New York were originally designed for compact accessibility. Today's 15-minute city expands horizons, fostering sustainable, tight-knit neighborhoods where life, work, and leisure coexist within a limited radius.

I sort of live in one. The whole city isnt this way but the part I live in is. I think it is because this area of the city is 100 years old. This neighborhood back then was also its own city before it got incorporated into the bigger one so it has a lot of its own infrastructure. I am minutes walk away from a library, zoo, college, food, grocery, convenience store, gas station, fire department, park, bars, and a lovely bike path along the river. I am very thankful to live here and it is so nice to walk where I want ro.

It would be crazy to build a college or zoo or fire station every few miles. A big city would end up with dozens of them. And youlittle local stores - I bet they have way higher prices and far less choice of goods than a large supermarket because a big store is far more efficient thanks to economies of scale.

@@richardgregory3684 You don't have to build a college or zoo every few miles, that's not how it works. The idea is everything you need, plus some extra amenities, should be within 15 minutes walk/cycle/public transport of where you live. So shops, pharmacies, GPs, bars, restaurants, cinemas etc. The whole point is that you are no longer car dependent, you do not rely on your car to live. You do not need to visit a zoo every week to live. Those will obviously be few and far between, but they should have good public transport links or you can drive to them if need be, but in your day to day life you do not need to rely on a car to shop, work or reach basic amenities.

@@MrEkzotic I am glad you put that in quotes because I am sure a sensible person like you didn't actually believe any of it. Until everyone has to carry a smartphone by law wherever they travel, that idea isn't going to work. Also you'd need to be visible to a camera for facial recognition, which still isn't 100% accurate by any means. Plus our incompetent Government wouldn't be able to build such infrastructure without it costing billions and probably never being completed. And for what gain? To totally destroy our economy? It's absolutely ridiculous. Now, yes, I can see congestion charges that impose a fee on entering more towns and cities becoming a thing.. even for EVs (they might be greener, but they still add to congestion) and that will encourage more people to use public transport, walk or cycle, but our economy relies on freedom of movement to work (generating money) and for retail/leisure (spending money).

@MrEkzotic
@MrEkzotic 5 месяцев назад
@@edmunddantes7097 The cons are loss of personal freedom and anonymity, being fined for driving outside of your designated area, being recorded 24/7 with facial recognition to calculate your social credit score. It is being done in Oxford: "People do not realize that residents will only be allowed within 15 minutes of their home address, and violators will be fined. For example, under the new proposals, if any of Oxford’s 150,000 residents drive outside their designated district more than 100 days a year, they could be fined £70. In addition, the government will track and control your every movement through your smartphones & facial recognition technology..." That is just the beginning. They are selling it on "convenience," but it's really about control.
@edmunddantes7097
@edmunddantes7097 5 месяцев назад
@@MrEkzotic @MrEkzotic 1.Personal freedom-people already live in cities. That's a real thing, not a new concept so not sure what you mean there. 2.Being fined for driving outside designated area- Not a real thing. It hasn't happened once. That was just a thing made up by somebody, try to find just one instance of it actually having happened. 3.Recorded 24/7 w/ facial recognition & SCS- That is a thing in China. Not in any of the other places where this already exists. However, that applies to ALL of China regardless of anything. 4.Violators will be fined and confined- From a completely different bill that regulates traffic of motor vehicles at certain times. People are free to use public transport or non vehicle means of travel. 5. Government tracking-Ever since the Patriot Act that's already been a thing. Has literally nothing to do with 15 minute cities and everything to do with government overreach. So right now they already have control of power grids, water grids and can cut off control of cell towers. They can close highways, main roads and other city exits. What aspect of a 15 minute city would make it easier?
@MrEkzotic
@MrEkzotic 5 месяцев назад
@@edmunddantes7097 Again, go to the official Oxford City Council website and read about the 15 minute city, it's all there in black and white. And you have to try to understand, sociopathic.authoritarians don't push everything all at once, they do it incrementally. If you study history and psychology, it's very easy to predict what's going to happen. I knew the Patriot Act would be used to spy on millions of innocent American citizens. I knew people would be strong armed into taking an experimental drug. I knew January 6th would be used to smear all Trump voters. The bureaucrats in government view you as an enemy, not as one they are supposed to serve. Go read the published documents.

Some people do things like regularly practise sports, imagine wanting playing hockey and not being able to easily drive to the rink with your kit. As someone who is shaping my next home purchase on walkability, I don't get how anyone can hate on a 15 minute city. I prefer biking to work but the route there is treacherous at points. I like the idea of being able to get groceries, entertainment, and have good public transit options connecting areas that are self-sustained, multi use, and walk friendly. Its insane that something can be a half mile away from you but you have to drive because the sidewalks are inadequate or not there at all due to roads.

I work for the railway. Do people think that they're just going to shut the railway network down, close roads and put up walls around every city? I mean, seriously, do they believe that - because I've read people saying just this. A cycle lane means they're going to turn every city into a prison! Hasn't anyone gone to a city and walked around to enjoy the sights? People literally go on holiday/vacation to see other cities around the world and most likely you used public transport or walked during your time there. Nobody locked you in and said you couldn't leave did they? This has to be one the more crazy conspiracy theories, and I work in a place called Welwyn Garden City - one of two garden cities built in the 1920s and literally had a mix of houses, parks, industrial areas, schools, a hospital and shops. 15 minute cities existed 100 years ago! Still no wall or borders 100 years on..

Well If they put up thousands of facial recognition cameras which they did at places like NYC remove most of the Motor ways except for supply routes and Public Services, than you can't really Go anywhere without Public Transportation. And when they've completely digitalised your id with your biometrical data all your movements and actions will be constantely monitored and evaluated. Then they don't have to close down the rail roads, it's sufficient to Just Block your digital id from using Public Transport or at least some routes Or you get fined or can't buy certain things anymore or lose access to certain Public Services.

The 15 minute cities are a concept that isn't really thought through. I mean what about all those people working in the big cities commuting from the Region? The City is already densly populated and expensive to live in? Would you want all those commuters to live there as well? Or would you Just cut Them off? I mean both solutions don't seem practical. And What about the supply lines? You would still need Roads for Trucks to Support so many people living in a small area.

Rail into and out of cities. Access for delivery trucks is built in. This is how they make nice cities in Europe. It is funny that so many people are afraid of 15 min cities. Please understand - the cities we live in that are choked with traffic and unwalkable were the result of top down control- parking minimums, very restrictive zoning that did not allow offices and housing to be near each over, highways on top of highways.

@@elliotwilliams7421 The point of 15 minute cities is individual self-reliance. If you lose your job apply for another. And if you can't do that in your area so be it. After all, it isn't like you already have travel hours at a time for work now. The point is that the 15 minute convenience will be there as opposed to never being in place to begin with, for people. And if we can cut travel time down and reliance on vehicles, why would we oppose it? My conclusion of your opposition is if you don't want the concept of 15 minute cities then you ultimately want to use a car that drives you everywhere around a country dependant on foreign oil interventions. Albeit you can use it at any given time, however its abundantly clear you can't _live_ without the car. We also have two legs God gave us that we can and should rightfully be allowed to use to get to services in a feasible space. And they can also be used at any given time, if the service infrastructure is in place. And the thing is you don't need to use transport within that 15 minute radius. Yes this lifestyle is ZERO dependency. I understand some things will still need to be travelled to via car or public transport, but less is ultimately the better.

These were all in walking distance. What ended them was the big businesses relocated to the county and then with more transportation came the shopping malls and eventually the small businesses went out of business because they couldn't compete and most people stopped patronizing these stores. The fact that it would take 15 minutes to go to the grocery store does not imply that you are not allowed out of a certain area. Your brain has been turned into goo through lead poisoning and fox news. Psychological help from trained professionals might help.
