@@RotemSivanGuitar I would find it helpful to "theorize" which scales would work best when soloing over those extensions.......Thanks again

I use 8's on my Telecaster and 9's on my Signature"Blackie" stratocaster. I used to use 10's but I saw an interview with B.B King and Billy Gibbons both use very light strings. Both of those guys have GREAT tone and both say it's in your hands NOT THE STRINGS! Last time I listened to them their tone was THICK and rich sounding.. plus it's easier on the fingers!!!😀

Man, cool lesson! I wish I had done this type of thing when I first started playing jazz. So powerful. Once you internalise the sound of these extensions and know where to find the notes you become so free to create interesting melodies in an intentional way versus just randomly playing scale tones over chords.

I use 9’s (9-46). Tim Pierce said he prefers them, and Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck use them, too.

I use 9s - easier on your fingers, gentler touch, easier bends, better sustain. No brainer for me now - Rick Beato made a video comparing all this stuff somewhere on his channel, that's when I first tried it. Only downside is if you have tension in your playing there is a tendancy to 'bend' certain chord shapes slightly out of tune 😅 not a problem if you have a good ear for these things - i actually think its improved my technique since i made the transition by helping me focus on removing muscular tension and aiming for a light touch

You have such a positive and inspiring teaching style. I've been using 9s on my strat my whole life haha. Love to do crazy string bends. Also just easier on the hands. I mostly do rhythm guitar for jazz (been learning for 3 years now) but I'm trying to expand into leads. Been playing 20 years with most of my background in metal and psychedelic lofi stuff. I found that a loop pedal to jazz standards is such a good way to practice improv! I bet you probably already do that haha

I spent about 5 or 6 years playing 12 - 56 on electric, but shifted over to 10-46 about 8 years ago or so. But lately I've really enjoyed using the "Hendrix Inspired" gauge set of 10 - 38. The first 3 strings come from a pack of 10s, but the low end comes from a pack of 8's! The result is a much tighter sounding low end when playing with gain, and it also reduces the overall tension on the neck quite nicely. I also tune to 432 hz instead of 440 hz, really helps the guitar relax a bit more.

I use Elixir 11s on electric on a Baum Leaper Tone (Danish/Korean guitar, it looks gorgeous), recently up from 10s. It's by necessity due to a nickel allergy and what's available at my local store - but they allow me to play without my fingers breaking into itchy and eventually painful blisters, which I'll take! I do like the slick feel and how long they last, though. Regular strings now feel almost 'sticky' to me, if that makes sense, especially if my hands get sweaty.

Hey man, I'm trying to develop my Jazz and Jazz-Blues Soloing Vocabulary by learning Heads & Solos. I wonder if you could give me some suggestions. If you were my teacher, what would you prescribe me!? I've learned Parker playing Billie's Bounce, Now's The Time, Au Privave. I then learned the solos on Chitlins Con Carne - Burrell; Grand Slam - Christian; Cool Blues - Green; Four on Six - Montgomery; Borgia Stick - Benson. Can you give me any suggestions for next steps please?

Why do you call them 9/13? Just 13 will suffice.... I mean, you CAN stipulate that you want to HEAR the 9 included, but basically it SHOULD be, or it's not a true 13. 1, 3, 5 (optional), b7, 9, 13. Obviously it can be played by adding a 6 to the 7, but in theory the 9 needs to be present.
