The fact they are evenly spaced tells me they are likely test holes drilled in search of minerals or oil. The white color is the color of the soil underneath and/or the mud used to maintain the integrity of the hole. For a time in my career I was involved in seismic work, and worked for a company that used heli-portable drills for this kind of work. An explosive charge was placed at the bottom of the hole. When detonated the vibrations could be recorded and analyzed to determine if there is oil deposits underneath.

When I was in 6th grade, my school oddly hired the gym coach to be our science teacher. He openly, and humbly, admitted he didn’t know much about science. I still remember the way he was wildly enthusiastic looking at pond water with a microscope, and how many times our science experiments failed because he cut corners thinking it didn’t matter, and then, we all went through an adventure of trying to figure out why the experiment failed. Hands down, he was my best science teacher ever. This channel reminds me of that 6th grade class!

Amen. Like the original Mr. Honda said, "success is 99% failure." The screw-ups and bumblers are the curious people who learn and figure things out -- often by mistake. The Golden Boys often don't learn because they avoid mistakes to the point of largely not taking action. We learn by humility and making mistakes, which keeps our Radar turned on; we don't learn by success.

At first I was thinking that the white spots were markers to be seen from the air, but someone mentioned geological testing and that makes more sense. The ancient structure definitely appeared to be a hunting blind, especially with all the deer tracks. Another cool one! 👍🏼😎🌵

I was surprised you didn't find chert flakes (knappings) in this hunting blind if it was native peoples. Possibly a settler/rancher's favorite spot 100+ years back? Age TBD. From what I saw I would say it's the remnants of a seismic line from O&G exploration to determine subsurface structure. I spent a lot of time in this part of the country 40+ years ago as a geologist and did work once with a local archaeologist on a drill-test project further North. There are literally thousands of O&G wells in the 4 Corners region. A LOT of exploration was done in this region. Thank you for your videos. It brings back a lot of great memories.

Hi... love your vids.. I'm a geologist (miss living out West... and is one reason I love your videos). Equidistant spacing of the "spots" in question make me think of an old fence line that's since been removed, possibly [??] ... At 7:25 in your vid, I said, "A-ha!" when I saw the outcropping carbonate rocks... am thinking the "spots" are simply the remaining "rock flour" (from drilling) of the apparent subsurface limestone formation. Do you have a geologic map and a stratigraphic section of the area? That will give you more insight on what you're dealing with, in terms of surficial geology and clues to surficial sedimentological markers. I used to walk the plains (truly out in the middle of nowhere) for wind farms near Casper, Wyoming, and I came upon lots of interesting sites like you have (e.g., rock structures, geological curiosities, artifacts old and "old"). After 30 yrs as a geologist, in both environmental engineering consulting, as well as wind energy and academia, I can tell you that there is always something to learn... we never stop learning and finding things that are new... new clues, new discoveries, new cool stuff/finds, new questions, and hopefully new awesome solutions to long-standing perplexing issues. Keep the adventures coming!! ⚒️😊

Back in the early 1980s oil companies did seismic exploration where they drilled holes at different depts and loaded them with dynamite. They then set them off in series and took readings of what was underground. They were laid out in grid lines usually around 440 feet apart. After the drills had moved on the ground looked just like this.
@stevewilliams5810

The white is dolomite used to plug the hole.
@ginkodragon
@ginkodragon 5 месяцев назад
I watched another video with a similar artifact, but in the Sahara desert, including the tin left from the workers' meals on the site. It was confirmed that they were holes drilled into the ground and set with dynamite. The vibrations from the blast would reveal if there was any oil. But it was stated that nowadays, sonar is used instead of dynamite.

*Does Jeff say how far apart they were? I agree the distance could be the determiner. Originally I thought it was decades of salt licks but it's too linear, doesn't follow the vegetation etc. Too close together to be early aircraft navigational aids. I like the test bore holes or removed communication line poles idea. Sometime when military bases are decommissioned, like the WW2 POW camps they leave nothing. Sometimes they leave lots.*

Not a lot of oil or agriculture in this area. Copper and silver are the most common mines in the four corners region. Copper and silver deposits mines are typically not on flat ground, they’re mountain mines. Another person suggested seismic drilling. Not sure if that’s what it is but I have a hard time believing it’s minerals or oil. Edit: could be copper. I looked into it and copper mines are often on the surface and they make a pit. I’d lean copper mine now!

My Dad worked for Standard Oil (Chevron today) and was tasked with mapping (for core samples) to be done in WY, CO, UT, NV, ID, AZ, NM, and parts of WA and OR. These may very well be some of the areas he walked/drove to sample. Granted, a few others were doing it with him and around him and the area. But I wouldn't be surprised if these were part of his work. And yes, they would go out to these very remote areas and determine where surveyors can direct where the core samples should be taken. Generally, they would follow or offset a certain distance from, some type of formation, valley, or some other type of uplift in the crust of the earth. Pretty wild to see it here now.

Jeff, it just makes me feel good to listen to the sounds of your footsteps crunching on the soil and through the dry brush under foot. It reminds me of many early morning hikes on deer hunts in the High Arizona desert. Cold, brisk air on your face, and crusty, semi-frozen soil under your boots. So, this video didn't feature any amazing or dramatic discovery, but it's peaceful and kind of therapeutic to be there, hiking with you, and listening to the sounds of tranquility in the High Desert. I worked seismic oil exploration in the 80s from Central Utah to Montana. Left the same marks from above ground dynamiting every 165 feet as long as 30-40 miles. Shot hole drilling works the same. The above ground blasting usually resulted in really lush green growth the following wet seasons since the blast was nitrogen fertilizer based.

While you’re out hiking in those areas, you should keep your eyes open for deer and elk shed antlers. They bring about $5-6 a pound. Look under trees where deer would lay in the shade, but also on hillsides that are exposed to sun. Could be a nice side hustle that might cover gas for your trips.

I lived in southern Utah and know that there are a lot of minerals and resources in the four corners area, my father was a miner as was most of my uncles. He worked gold mines, copper, and uranium . The Navajo Nation has one of the largest oil reserves in North America, also before moving away from that area they were finding larger reserves that they said they could not get to, making me wonder if those reserves are like tar sands. As a kid there were so many oil wells driving that four corners area like to bluff, Mexican hat, Montezuma Creek, towards Cortez, Colorado, so many wells that you could not count them hundreds of wells along the highways , most were capped by the late eighties and the Navajo said they were not going to pull as much out now and just go on what they were storing and just work to keep the reserves full, the Navajo had at least I believe still do have exclusive ,sales rights to the federal government and this Navajo reserve represents the bulk of the national oil reserves. And so the test holes theory is a sound one.

I believe they are relics from WWII. Training markers for air force, army and navy flight school, some were just chalk markers, others made of concrete. They trained their pilots in the middle of nowhere to prevent crashes into populated areas and to conceal how many fatal training crashes were happening. Some of the small structures are observation posts along the flight route used to evaluate trainees. Some of them may have been bombed.

Maybe somebody dumped bags of salt from a small plane for their cattle? I have seen melted salt licks out in the middle of nowhere that really confused me before I knew what they were. It would attract deer as well. The structure looks like either a hunting blind or a shepherd's shelter to watch their sheep from. The chert you were finding looked like debitage, or the bits left behind from making tools. Somebody probably already came by and took all the good stuff.

the regularity is challenging for sure but they definitely look like salt/mineral/alkalai deposits. that would explain why the deer are there as well. I would guess those light spots to be a different rock. The red color of the dirt on top is from iron in soil. This comes from iron in the original rock that broke down into the surface soil. The white soil and rock on the surface at the regular spots is probably the rock bed below the red rock bed. The regularity of rock that was pulled up from underneath was from a mechanical auger. Holes drilled for the wood post of a livestock fence. The fence and all evidence has been removed except for the rock from underneath. If not the remnant of a fence then possibly that of a power line. Possibly mining test holes. I owned a fence construction company and I worked for a mining company.Only guessing because it is fun to speculate.

I wish there was more footage of findings and structures. More of a close up look at things. I'd love to see more things.

The spots are most likely drilling sites looking for minerals or metals. I agree with you on the rocks and sticks being a hunting blind…but I’d guess it’s less than 100 years old.

Winter is ending. I wonder what your hiking/ recording plans are for the coming hiking season. I love the areas you've hiked in. I've driven through them in decades past. But family necessities took over, some years past, and now I can only go there via videos such as these you post. Thank you!

The comments section came through with some interesting conclusions! What I wondered was - is the white soil on the surface or does it go down to some depth? Also the stone structure - quite big boulders, must have taken quite a bit of effort to get them on top of each other. So it was intended to last anyway, whether hunting blind or shelter. Thanks Jeff, it's all very intriguing!

Sometimes when drilling a hole (or well) bentonite clay is added to seal the sides. That may be what you are seeing on the ground. Keep up the great work.
