In this video, we use New York's MTA Bus Time API in order to find bus stops near a given location and determine when a specific bus arrives at a given stop. This API requires an API Key and in this tutorial, we'll look at what that means and how to affects your http request. Thank you for watching and happy coding!

Can you make a video of the difference between API and API Keys? from what I gathered and API is something that takes a requests and brings back the response such as when we go to a third party website for air line tickets that program brings back the responses from the airlines database. An API Key is something you use to see where some thing is at when it's en route ?

Hi, I'm new to web development, I would like to know how API Keys differ from Access Tokens? From what I've learned so far, Access tokens are used to check your identity if you are authorize to access a service exposed by the API. Are these just terms or there's something more to it? Thank you.

partly it comes down to semantics and with so many apis out there, there are bound to be some that wont use the common definitions but API Keys are very general and exist at the App level, it allows the service to identify the app making the request. Even if you have 20 different instances of your app running making requests they all have the same api key because it is (usually) hard coded into the app. Access tokens are dynamic and returned to your app when a user logs in and every user will have a unique access token

@@expharate5422 Not entirely sure what you mean without a concrete example but as the user of an API you cant set the rules, the API developer sets the rules of what a program needs to use their API

Matthew Garber like cracking a sprx. By first turning it back to a prx with a decompiler and getting rid of the authentication system it has. It requires a key/token to be used. Do you think you know how to do that? Cracking something

@@expharate5422 I haven't ever done that specifically but if you need to decompile an executable be sure to find a good decompiler, unfortunately, most of the free ones aren't great but I haven't looked at decompilers for around 5 years so things could have changed. If you have access to the exe though that does give you more options. I thought you meant cracking a web api since that is what this video was focused on. even with a decompiler it usually will give you back assembly code, not the original source code and machine code/assembly is far less human-readable (but not impossible). Since you have a concrete example Im guessing your trying to do what someone else already did so maybe check on some gaming forums and possible StackOverflow but that's probably too niche of a question for StackOverflow

To make it complete - If it is http and not https, then how is the API Key kept secure ?

Answer is - It isn't !! In https-based API the entire message including url, header, body is encrypted and secure but not in http-based one. Perhaps, this opens up the app using the API key to DDoS rate limiting unavailability ! And for all the other many reasons too, an https-based API is always preferable.

You have to pay a subscription or create an account. It depends on the API provider. It’s simply a password to access the API
